Recently the state of Connecticut made public all its files on the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Meanwhile the national media has transfixed on two things that have nothing to do with the actual shooting in my opinion.
The first is this picture of a young Adam Lanza…
That’s a young Adam Lanza dressed in camos, teething on what appears to be a gun in front of a gun rack. First off the gun he’s holding is probably a toy and this picture could be of any number of kids who were and are raised in rural America. That doesn’t make them potential mass killers. As a matter of fact, kids who are raised around guns are usually less likely to become killers since they’re taught to respect firearms and are well-educated on the damage they can do. I’m not here to argue the merits or drawbacks of the 2nd Amendment but guns did not make Adam Lanza a mass murderer.
Another thing the media is making a big deal about is the fact that a psychiatrist who once treated Lanza voluntarily gave up his license because he allegedly had a sexual relationship with one of his patients. He briefly treated Lanza and barely remembered him. The doctor surrendered his license in 2012. This didn’t cause Lanza to become a mass murderer either.
Again Lanza became a mass murderer because he was allowed to have an unhealthy obsession about previous school shootings and was allowed easy access to weapons by his mother. People with Asperger’s can tend to have obsessions over one particular subject, Adam Lanza’s were mass killings and no one discouraged him from it. Another case of Not My Kid Syndrome.
