Robbery suspect shot and killed in craigslist plot to steal dog

do-you-feel-lucky

A man was shot in killed in DeKalb County, Georgia after allegedly trying to rob a man who was selling a bulldog puppy on craigslist. The man was offered an extra $500 to deliver the dog late at night. When the man arrived at the meeting place with the dog two men were waiting for him. One produced a gun in an attempt to steal the dog. The man selling the dog brought a friend with him who happened to be legally carrying his own gun. The man’s friend shot and killed the alleged robber in self-defense. The man who was killed has been linked to other robberies in the area as well.

Even the bad guys are taking their lives in their hands on craigslist.

Arrest made in September craigslist killing in NJ.

Travis Picou

Travis Picou

Back in September 41-year-old Mamuka Chamiashvili of Brooklyn, New York, was shot and killed in Elizabeth, New Jersey, after responding to a craigslist ad for a Mercedes-Benz SUV.

Back in October 28-year-old Ali Garner and 30-year-old Keon Lewis, both of Elizabeth, were arrested in connection with Mr. Chamiashvili’s murder and recently 36-year-old Travis Picou of Paterson was also arrested. All three are being held on $2 million bond each.

I’ll say it again that using craigslist for any reason is very akin to playing Russian Roulette.

Bodies of missing Ga. couple found, suspect in custody

Ronnie “Jay” Adrian Towns

Jay Towns

I am sad that i have to post that the bodies of Bud and June Runion have been found. The couple from Marietta, Georgia went missing after going to look at a Ford Mustang that was advertised on craigslist. Unfortunately there was no Mustang which seems more like a ploy to commit robbery. The suspect in the Runnions’ disappearance and death, 28-year-old Jay Towns, has been apprehended. The Runions’ vehicle was found submerged and their bodies were found nearby but not underwater.

Here’s something that I forgot to mention in my last post. I don’t post about every craigslist scam anymore. There are so many that it would be too time consuming for me to post every one. However with the last few months I have heard of a scam where scammers are posting ads on classifieds sites like craigslist advertising either high dollar value or classic cars. In too many cases the cars don’t exist and are just bait to fleece people out of their money. Unfortunately in this case the cost was much greater.

My heart breaks for the Runion family and my prayers and condolences go out to them.

UPDATE 2/2/2015: The autopsies showed that the Runions were both shot in the head.

David Sparre’s death sentence upheld in Jacksonville craigslist killing

David Sparre

David Sparre

This week the Florida Supreme Court upheld the death sentence for David Sparre. Sparre was convicted in the brutal 2010 stabbing death of 21-year-old Tiara Pool. Sparre had met his victim through the casual encounters section of craigslist in Jacksonville, Florida. The pair had sex before Sparre stabbed her almost 90 times. Sparre was convicted and then sentenced to death for Tiara’s murder. After his sentencing Sparre sent a letter to his ex-girlfriend bragging about how he enjoyed killing Tiara. So it came as a surprise to me that an appeal of his death sentence was even being entertained.

During his trial and penalty phase Sparre instructed his attorney, Chief Assistant Public Defender Refik Eler, to not present any evidence in his defense. Eler, who said Sparre was guilty of second-degree murder but didn’t deserve the death penalty, planned to introduce evidence he was mentally unbalanced and abused drugs and alcohol since he was 11.

But Sparre reiterated his instructions to Circuit Judge Elizabeth Senterfitt, who ruled that Eler couldn’t present the evidence against his wishes.

On appeal Tallahassee Public Defender Nada Carey argued that Senterfitt abused her discretion by not considering all the evidence that would have kept Sparre off Death Row. She said it didn’t matter that Sparre didn’t want it brought up.

In Thursday’s unanimous Supreme Court ruling the justices said that in cases where a death-penalty defendant declined to offer a defense, the judge was required to order a comprehensive pre-sentence investigation into the that defendant’s background. That was done in Sparre’s case, with the investigation addressing his physical and mental health.

So that brings Sparre one step closer to the needle which will be infinitely more merciful than the death of Tiara Pool, a mother of one who still had her whole life in front of her. It’s too bad they won’t be able to lunge the needle into him 90 times. Hell, by the time his execution date would have rolled around I’m the country will have lost its nerve on killing monsters like Sparre.

NYPD looking for Brooklyn craigslist rapist

Suspect in hotel surveillance footage

Suspect in hotel surveillance footage

The NYPD are looking for a man accused of raping a woman who was providing massages on craigslist back in October. The suspect is said to have flashed a badge after getting a massage at the woman’s motel room. He then allegedly raped the woman and robbed her before fleeing in a black Mercedes.

The suspect is described as an adult black male wearing a black T-shirt with yellow lettering, light-blue ripped jeans and black sneakers.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit tips at WWW.NYPDCRIMESTOPPERS.COM or by texting 274637 (CRIMES) then entering TIP577.

All calls are strictly confidential.

I know some of you might think that the victim may have been working as a prostitute and got what she deserved. No, she didn’t. No woman no matter what their line of work, legitimate or otherwise. deserves to be raped.

Iowa couple arrested for craigslist kidnapping and sexual abuse of victim

Hodza and Sorensen

Hodza and Sorensen

Aldair Hodza and Laura Evelene Sorensen, of Clive, Iowa, were arrested in New Kent County, Virginia early last week. They were arrested at a truck stop when a trucker notified police of suspicious activity in their RV. No, it wasn’t meth, instead police found a malnourished woman. When police separated her from Hodza and Sorenesen she told them that she was being held against her will and was being physically and sexually abused. They were allegedly at the truck stop because Hodza was turning out his victim on craigslist and was there to meet someone who was willing to pay. Hozda even allegedly branded his victim on her back probably marking her as his property. Not surprisingly Hodza is said to have swastika tattoos on his arms. That would probably explain why he thinks so little of other people. This story reminds me a lot of Edward Bagley who kept a woman hostage for years as his personal sex slave, even lending his victim out to friends. He got 20 years.

Special thanks need to go out to truckers who really can be and often are the eyes and ears needed to stop human trafficking.

Also it appears that sex trafficking is returning to craigslist with a vengeance, or maybe it never left. Heaven forfend if craigslist would actually keep their own yard clean by moderating.

The craigslist pregnancy story isn’t as unusual as it seems

Justin Robert Muoio

Justin Robert Muoio

There’s been a story making the rounds in the ‘strange news’ websites. It’s been on FARK and I’ve heard it on several morning radio shows. It’s the story about how 32-year-old Justin Robert Muoio of the Miami area prostituted a pregnant woman on craigslist to ‘fetishists’.

Muoio is accused of turning out the woman since 2009 and once she became pregnant he didn’t allow that to interfere with his money-making. Police say that he also kept all of her money and would frequently keep her imprisoned and even had his mother keep watch on her.

Unfortunately stories like this are not as unusual or strange as you might expect. Women like this are frequently forced into prostitution every day on craigslist and Backpage and never make the news and yes sometimes they are pregnant.

At least hopefully this story can help shed light on the plight of all victims of sex trafficking and that it still exists on craigslist.

Violent craigslist pimp sentenced to 112 years

Robert Felix Gonzales

Robert Felix Gonzales

41-year-old Robert Felix Gonzales of Broomfield, Colorado, was recently sentenced to 112 years behind bars for prostituting a 14-year-old girl on craigslist. This took place between 2011 and 2013 you know, after adult/erotic services was removed from the site.

Like most pimps he convinced his victim that he was her boyfriend but that didn’t stop him from using violence against her. Reports say that one time he hit her so hard that he broke his own hand. It took the girl to jump from a moving car to finally escape from this scumbag. Again, kind of dispels the whole consenting adults thing.

It’s refreshing to see a jurisdiction hand down a serious sentence when it comes to the crime of child sex trafficking. Here’s hoping that it continues and more places follow.

We get letters: Kill yourself sell-out

hatemail

I received the following e-mail about my postings on the topic of craigslist…

Really? How may people were killed when responding to adds in newspapers back befor CL killed the ad section? Please, Cl is the world , not a probelm site as the jelous pigs who are loosing revenue are trying to portray and who probable pay you for your yellow reporting. Kill yourself sell-out.

First of all congratulations, you made spell check cry.

Secondly compare this list, which dates back to 1859, to the number of ‘craigslist killers’ in just the past 8 years that I’ve been keeping track and you’ll see that craigslist clearly ‘wins’ hands down.

Lastly, who exactly is the sell out? The person who questions a company’s shady practices or the one who blindly believes in it?
