The victim of the craigslist rape orchestrated by Jebidiah James Stipe and committed by Ty Oliver McDowell has come forward on the Oprah show and her name is Sarah Lynn Kostovny. Due to the internet blackout at work and the fact that I don’t watch a lot of TV anymore I’m not sure if this episode has aired yet.
For those of you not familiar with the story Stipe was a Marine stationed in California. He placed an ad on the casual encounters section of craigslist posing as Ms. Kostovny in Wyoming saying that she wanted to have a rape fantasy. McDowell was the one picked by Stipe to be the instrument of his revenge and raped Ms. Kostovny. She says that Stipe was jealous that she was marrying her fiance. What kills me is that 161 people in such a sparsely populated area like Wyoming responded to the fake but dangerous ad.
That’s 161 people who actually believed an ad on craigslist that a woman wanted a stranger to come to her house and rape her. While craigslist may be receiving kudos for shutting down the adult services section in the US the casual encounters section is still running abated as it always has been, unmoderated and plenty dangerous. And it is people like McDowell who take up residence there. Men, and I use that term loosely, who are waiting for opportunities to live out their twisted fantasies no matter who it hurts or how false the ad is. I may be focusing on backpage as far as human trafficking goes but I have not forgotten that craigslist still needs plenty of cleaning up.
I admire Ms. Kostovny’s courage to be able to go public with her ordeal. If it wasn’t for the fact that it actually happened it would sound like a bad episode of Law & Order SVU. It just shows how depraved a lot of members of our society are and how far they’re willing to go exact their revenge.
