Craigslist rape victim speaks publicly:
The victim of the craigslist rape orchestrated by Jebidiah James Stipe and committed by Ty Oliver McDowell has come forward on the Oprah show and her name is Sarah Lynn Kostovny. Due to the internet blackout at work and the fact that I don’t watch a lot of TV anymore I’m not sure if this episode has aired yet.
For those of you not familiar with the story Stipe was a Marine stationed in California. He placed an ad on the casual encounters section of craigslist posing as Ms. Kostovny in Wyoming saying that she wanted to have a rape fantasy. McDowell was the one picked by Stipe to be the instrument of his revenge and raped Ms. Kostovny. She says that Stipe was jealous that she was marrying her fiance. What kills me is that 161 people in such a sparsely populated area like Wyoming responded to the fake but dangerous ad.
That’s 161 people who actually believed an ad on craigslist that a woman wanted a stranger to come to her house and rape her. While craigslist may be receiving kudos for shutting down the adult services section in the US the casual encounters section is still running abated as it always has been, unmoderated and plenty dangerous. And it is people like McDowell who take up residence there. Men, and I use that term loosely, who are waiting for opportunities to live out their twisted fantasies no matter who it hurts or how false the ad is. I may be focusing on backpage as far as human trafficking goes but I have not forgotten that craigslist still needs plenty of cleaning up.
I admire Ms. Kostovny’s courage to be able to go public with her ordeal. If it wasn’t for the fact that it actually happened it would sound like a bad episode of Law & Order SVU. It just shows how depraved a lot of members of our society are and how far they’re willing to go exact their revenge.
Craigslist rapist receives same sentence as man who solicited assault:
The other day I posted about how James Jebidiah Stipe was sentenced to 60 years for posting an ad on craigslist posing as his ex saying that she wanted a man to help her participate in a rape fantasy.
On Wednesday the actual rapist, Ty Oliver McDowell, was also sentenced to 60 years for raping the Casper, Wyoming woman.
While I did hear that McDowell not only raped her but also raped her with a foreign object that object turned out to be a knife sharpener. McDowell also struck her repeatedly and left her bound in her home after the rape.
McDowell’s parents testified that he had an internet porn addiction. While this is obviously not an excuse for committing such a brutal rape I’m not surprised. Considering that he believed a woman was actually into a rape fantasy and advertised about it on craigslist he seems like one of those guys I used to see in webcam rooms while I was doing research for other crimes that would think that women were actually interested in seeing his junk. Sorry for the run on sentence.
While I think the internet is the greatest invention of my lifetime unfortunately it’s breeding a brand of perverts who think that everything on the internet is true including women who solicit rape fantasies on craigslist. In my opinion the odds are almost 100% that the woman requesting a rape fantasy on craigslist is actually a guy trying to get revenge on the woman.
If craigslist got rid of their perceived notion of anonymity it would cut down on these type of revenge crimes.
Judge gives man 60 years in Craigslist rape case:
For those of you who haven’t been following the story 28-year-old Jebidiah James Stipe, of Twentynine Palms, California pleaded guilty to setting up a rape through craigslist. Stipe had taken out a phony ad posing as a woman he wanted to get back at saying that she wanted to live out a rape fantasy.
She was actually raped by Ty Oliver McDowell of Casper, Wyoming who has also pleaded guilty.
Stipe, was sentenced today to 60 years to life for orchestrating this revenge rape.
Stipe said to the court that he learned his lesson and would be a productive member of society if he was not given any time. Too late for that scumbag. You should have thought of that before you placed the ad.
The victim put it best..
“I really hope that whatever sentence he gets is long enough that he doesn’t have the opportunity to do this to someone else, because I’m stuck with a life sentence that he gave me,”
So he’ll be 88 at the earliest when he gets out. Yeah he should be pretty useless if he gets out then.
But again this shows the problem of the anonymity that craigslist allows its users.
And to the male freaks out there that troll the casual encounters section of craigslist, I would say that less than 1% of women actually want a rape fantasy, and those that do must have serious mental issues.
Speaking of revenge rapes, because we were, the two men involved in the craigslist rape of a Wyoming woman have both pleaded guilty.
As you may recall Jebidiah James Stipe, of Twentynine Palms, California placed a craigslist add in Wyoming posing as his ex-girlfriend requesting a rape fantasy in the casual encounters section.
Ty Oliver McDowell was the man who responded to the ad and raped the woman.
Both of them have pleaded guilty to the charges against them.
Even with the pleas they are both still looking at life behind bars.
Hopefully that’s what they will get but don’t hold your breath.
1 trial for 2 men accused of arranging rape online:
If you’ll recall Jebidiah James Stipe, of Twentynine Palms, California is accused of positing an ad on craigslist posing as a woman he knows soliciting a rape fantasy that the victim of course didn’t really want. Ty Oliver McDowell of Wyoming is accused of committing the rape on the Casper, Wyoming woman. Both have been ordered to stand trial and they will be tried together. The trial is expected to start on May 24th.
I’m still amazed that there are people out there who think that a lot of women actually have rape fantasies and want them acted out by complete strangers on craigslist. I wouldn’t be surprised if McDowell actually thought what he was doing was consensual however just for the fact that he entered a woman’s house and raped a stranger shows that he’s more than a danger to society. He probably believes that the word gullible is not in the dictionary.
26-year-old Ty Oliver McDowell is accused of raping a woman in Casper, Wyoming after answering a craigslist ad that solicited a rape fantasy. Of course the ad was not placed by the victim but by another man who allegedly wanted to get back at her. McDowell is the alleged not the person accused of placing the ad. McDowell may just be an idiot for thinking that women who want to have rape fantasies actually place ads on craigslist.
McDowell has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him which include first-degree sexual assault, one count of aggravated kidnapping and one count of aggravated burglary. And by sexual assault they mean rape. Why does no one use the word rape anymore? Anyway he’s looking at a life sentence.
The way things have been going he’ll probably only get 10 years.
Craigslist rape case advances:
I originally posted about the craigslist rape by proxy in Wyoming here. In case you’ve forgotten in that instance 27-year-old Jebidiah James Stipe of California allegedly took out in ad on craigslist requesting the rape of a Casper, Wyoming woman. 26-year-old Ty Oliver McDowell of Casper allegedly took him up on his request.
It seems that Stipe set up the ad to make it look like it was written by the victim including in the ad “Need a real aggressive man with no concern for women.”
McDowell claims that he thought he was just fulfilling a woman’s fantasy. Apparently he thought that raping a woman and telling her “You want an aggressive man, bitch, I’ll show you aggressive” was fulfilling a fantasy.
This is not the first time that something along these lines has happened however to the first of my recollection this is the first time it led to a rape.
What I would like to know is what kind of idiot thinks that an ad like that would be real? I guess the same guys who believe the letters in Penthouse Forum and that the stripper actually likes them.
McDowell seems to me like he was a predator in waiting just waiting for the opportunity.
Rape suspects remain in jail:
In a case that bears a striking resemblance to the one that happened near me in Kannapolis, NC two men have been arrested for the rape of woman who was set up through craigslist.
27-year-old Jebidiah James Stipe of Twentynine Palms, California has been arrested for allegedly setting up the rape of a woman in Natrona County, Wyoming through craigslist. 26-year-old Ty Oliver McDowell of Casper has been arrested for the rape itself. The rape is said to have taken place on December 11th.
What is unclear at this time is Stipe’s relationship to the victim and what the ad that solicited the rape said.
Of course the EFF is quick to defend craigslist…
Matt Zimmerman, senior staff attorney at Electronic Frontier Foundation in California, said Craigslist is protected from liability for posting ads requesting illegal activity under the 1996 Federal Communications Act.
“The law is pretty clearly on the side of Craigslist and (other similar sites),” Zimmerman said.
“To give Craigslist a little credit, they negotiated an agreement with attorneys general across the country where they basically said, ‘We’re not obligated to do this, but we’ll do a number of things to alleviate your concerns,'” he said.
“That’s above and beyond what they’re required to do by law,” Zimmerman said.
You would think that being such an allegedly socially conscious organization that craigslist would do more than just the bare minimum of what the law requires.
Much like the ACLU the EFF is choosing the wrong battles and giving itself a credibility problem.
Considering that McDowell is also accused of violating the victim with a foreign object I don’t see how the EFF and craigslist can say that they’re doing enough.
