It’s been years since I last posted about Kevin Newland. He first came to notice back in 2006 when he was arrested in connection with the disappearance of then 19-year-old Jamie Lynn Drake. This was back when I was posting about any criminal that had a MySpace account.
Unfortunately it turned out that Miss Drake was murdered by Newland. Investigators say that he suffocated her with a plastic bag. He hid her body under the floorboards of a cabin in the woods of Washington state.
Newland was sentenced to 45 years for the murder but the other day that turned into a death sentence. Newland was shot and killed during an attempted break out at Clallam Bay Corrections Center.
I tweeted this information to a former high-profile crime blogger who covered the case when it first happened and he tweeted back to me that it “Couldn’t have happened to a nicer murdering asshole.” My only addition to that is to the guard who shot and killed him is thanks for saving the taxpayers of Washington some money.
This is the part where I remind you that I worked in the healthcare industry for 22 years. Not only have I worked for several major health insurance companies but I have also worked for medical practices and for a company that did annual enrollment for several major corporations. I’m not bragging, I’m just saying that for the fact that I may have a little knowledge about the subject at hand.
Anyway, yesterday a federal appeals court in Cincinnati ruled that the “individual mandate” part of President Obama’s healthcare reform is constitutional. The “individual mandate” is the part that says all US citizens will be required to carry some form of health coverage by 2014.
How is this even remotely constitutional? Not only that but this does not make healthcare more affordable. In my opinion it’s quite the opposite. If health insurance is made mandatory the government is basically giving the insurance companies carte blanche to charge whatever they want for something that your forced to have.
There is no real choice in the health insurance markets since most states only have a duopoly at best of what health insurance carriers you can ‘choose’. The only thing that will make health insurance more affordable is if these market strangleholds are broken and not the so-called reforms that President Obama is forcing upon us.
I’m not saying that President Obama is in the pockets of the health insurance industry but it seems like he is sure putting more of the people’s money into their pockets.
As fate would have it I’ve been spending a lot of time recently in South Jersey due to family matters. (Boy that Urkel is crazy.) That means I’ve been even closer to the situation in Camden, New Jersey than usual.
The most recent incident in the crime infested city is the case of 9-year-old Jorge Cartagena, an ambitious fourth-grader who was constantly looking for a way to help support his family.
He was struck by a stray bullet that was allegedly fired by the cowardly 29-year-old Greg Rawls of Camden and Pennsauken. Jorge was not Rawls’ target. Police say that Rawls fired six shots at an intersection where Jorge was walking to his grandmother’s house. Jorge was struck in either the eye or the temple depending on reports and doctors say that he will probably be blind for the rest of his life. Rawls was tracked down to a home in Sicklerville where he was arrested.
Again this is not surprising considering that not only is Camden regularly ranked as one of the most crime ridden cities in the country but also because half of their police force has been laid off in the past year because less than half of the properties in Camden pay taxes.
This sickens me because despite its reputation there are some good people in Camden and their city has basically forsaken them. Plus it’s only a matter of time before Camden’s sickness starts creeping into neighboring cities. Cities where I have family that I care very much about.
If any city was in need of martial law it would be Camden but no lawmaker on the state or federal level would have the guts to so it.
19-year-old James Randall Wilson was arrested in Orange County, Florida in a craigslist sting.
Police in Orange County posted an ad on craigslist posing as a woman who was selling out her 13-year-old niece for sex. The ad was looking for someone to “play and have fun with” with “my AWESOME niece.”
Wilson showed up for the meeting on rollerbaldes with condoms allegedly in his possession. He had the condoms because he allegedly promised not to get the girl pregnant.
Just another story where I’m sure this ad was placed in the casual encounters section without craigslist’s knowledge and where the community policing did nothing to prevent it. Luckily it was placed by police but how many ads like this aren’t?
The article I linked to is a 5 page piece of self-serving dreck from the allegedly vaunted Village Voice. In it they question a statistic that says 100,000-300,000 children are being trafficked in the US every day. Specifically they call out celebrity couple Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher because of their Demi and Ashton Foundation (DNA) and their Real Men Don’t Buy Girls campaign.
What the Village Voice says is that number is more like 800 because that’s the number of arrests of child prostitutes they came up with in only 37 cities.
But come on. Who are they trying to fool? The only reason that the Village Voice is going after the child trafficking numbers is because Village Voice Media is the parent company of Backpage.com where scores of children are being trafficked. VVM considers this a first amendment issue basically saying that anyone who says they should get rid of the prostitution ads on their sites are basically engaging in censorship. That’s not very impartial reporting if you ask me.
As I’ve said before, Village Voice Media is only concerned about the part of the first amendment that protects them and not the rights of the children and women that are trafficked on the pages of their sites.
When my lovely and talented wife Jade sent me this article she commented that she ‘wondered’ where the victim was advertised. While I couldn’t confirm it one could safely assume that the victim was advertised on one of the big two. However I am getting ahead of myself.
This article from change.org is mostly about how they want the Wyndham hotel chains to be more proactive in helping to prevent child prostitution at their franchises. However I want to focus on the other part of the article which is the fact that members of violent criminal gangs are trafficking children as prostitutes.
In one instance in San Diego members of the Crips were allegedly prostituting girls as young as 14. In the most recent instance in Virginia a member of MS-13 was turning out a 15-year-old girl and was advertising her as a “high school girl” and “fresh out of the box.”
So for those of you that are ‘hobbyists’ when you get a girl off of backpage or craigslist not only could you be getting a child but your money could be going to fuel some of the most violent group of criminals in our country.
But hey, it’s all consenting adults and a victimless crime right? Hardly.
Yesterday Memphis police arrested 31-year-old Jose Garcia for allegedly having sex (child rape) with a 15-year-old boy that he approached on MySpace.
Garcia allegedly had sex with the student from Bishop Byrne High School after approaching the boy on MySpace in February of 2009. The ‘sex’ allegedly took place in the Junior Hall of the school. It wasn’t reported until 2010 and Garcia was eventually arrested in 2011.
Garcia was suspended and barred from the school at the time of the initial complaint.
He’s kind of ‘pretty’. He’s going to be real popular inside.
Let’s see. In the last 3 posts we’ve had booze, meth and weed. Hell, let’s throw some morphine into the mix for good measure.
In Spartanburg County, South Carolina police there have arrested 37-year-old Stephanie Greene for the November, 2010 death of her 6-week-old daughter Alexis.
Investigators say that she had so much morphine in her system that it passed a lethal level of morphine to her daughter through her breast milk. According to at least one expert that’s an incredibly difficult feat…
Breast-feeding mothers are allowed to take morphine because low levels of the painkiller pass into the mother’s milk when taken properly, said Diana West, a spokeswoman for La Leche League International, which encourages breast-feeding in new mothers.
“Most drugs like morphine pass so poorly through human milk that it is nearly impossible for a child to have a therapeutic dose, much less a lethal dose,” West said.
Greene is accused of illegally obtaining morphine in one form or another 38 times all from the same pharmacy. Check out her grocery list for the past 2 years…
Fentanyl – Pain med that comes in Patch form. Often given to people who suffer from constant pain.
Duragesic – Pain med along the same type as Fentanyl.
Morphene – In pill form
Hydrocodon – also known as Vicoprofen
Shit like this rubs me the wrong way horribly for two reasons. The first is my wife has a constant pain disorder and it takes almost an act of God for her to get any kind of pain killers. The second is that I used to work at a pharmacy. Granted this was 20 years ago but even then we had pill poppers constantly coming in to the store trying to get refills of Percocet. Back then it was illegal to issue a prescription for Percocet that included refills. Even back then we had a stringent check for prescription abuse. I would imagine that it’s even more stringent today with everything being computerized the way it is yet she was still able to illegally obtain morphine 38 times at the same pharmacy. It sounds like to me that she may have had an inside connection at the pharmacy.
And lastly and most importantly a child who never had a chance at life is dead all because this slag had to get her fix.
‘They’ should see how many of those Fentanyl patches they can fit on her before she croaks. I hear opiate overdose is a nasty way to go.
The sad part is she’s looking at more time for the drugs than she is for the death of her own daughter.
Timothy and Kimberly Smith of Woodstock, Illinois have pleaded not guilty to the charges against them which led to the shooting death of 48-year-old Kurt Milliman.
If you’ll recall Mr. Milliman allegedly responded to a craigslist ad where Timothy Smith was advertising the prostitution services of his wife. Sometime during the night police say that Timothy Smith shot and killed Mr. Milliman and the couple allegedly concocted a burglary/self-defense explanation for the killing.
Timothy Smith is charged with first-degree murder, pandering, obstructing justice, and pimping. He’s looking at 45 to life. His wife has been charged with obstructing justice, disorderly conduct, and prostitution.
Smith the husband is said to have wept at his plea hearing. Aw, poor baby. You at least still have your life, Kurt Milliman does not.
