Let 2011 be forever known as the year that murderers got their way. First Casey Anthony literally gets away with murder, in my opinion, then the convicted child killers known as the West Memphis 3 are released now convicted cop killing scumbag Mumia Abu Jamal will not receive the death penalty that he more than deserves.
Back in October, the U.S. Supreme court refused to rule on whether Jamal’s death sentence was constitutional or not. That meant that the Philadelphia DA’s office could seek a new sentencing hearing for Jamal’s death sentence or if he should get life in prison.
Minutes ago Philadelphia DA Seth Williams announced that they will not seek the death penalty against Jamal. For those of you not familiar with the case Jamal was convicted of killing Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel Faulkner 30 years ago this Friday. Jamal became a cause celebre over the last 3 decades with his supporters claiming his innocence even though the evidence shows otherwise.
The announcement was made with the blessing of Officer Faulkner’s widow Maureen Faulkner. She says that the fight has taken too much of an emotional and physical toll on her and her family. I can’t fault Mrs. Faulkner for supporting DA Williams’ decision.
The problem that I do have is that this won’t be enough for the Mumia supporters. Now that they have a victory with Jamal not facing the death penalty it’s my opinion that there will be a resurgence in the movement to see him freed.
In an age where prosecutors are too willing to make deals with murderers, I would not be surprised if Mumia is eventually freed. If that does happen it will be one of the biggest miscarriages of justice our country has ever seen.
