The Trench Reynolds Report

Without truth there is no justice

First I want to offer my prayers and thoughts to the citizens and visitors of Boston who were affected by today’s tragedy.

It is definitely way too early to speculate on a suspect or motive but I thought of something while watching the news reports. Today is tax day here in the United States. April 15th is the annual deadline for American citizens to have their income tax returns filed. Boston was the site of the historic Boston Tea Party, a protest by American colonists protesting the heavy taxes inflicted on them by the British Crown.

If you were to ask me what type of person would commit such an atrocity I would have to say that in my very amateur opinion it is more than likely a tax protester who is a part of the sovereign citizen movement. In a nutshell they believe that they are citizens of their respective states and not federal citizens and some believe as such that federal income tax does not apply to them.

While the New York Post has reported that there was a Saudi national in custody the Boston Police have said that there are no suspects in custody during the latest press conference. Keep this in mind, shortly after the bombing in Oklahoma City they said the suspect at first was Middle Eastern and we know that turned out not to be true.

Boston news says that the feds are questioning someone possibly related to the bombings.

UPDATE 4/16/2013: Two of the people killed by the bombs have been identified as 8-year-old Martin Richard and 29-year-old Krystle Campbell. My prayers and condolences go out to their friends and families. I can’t imagine the grief over two young and promising lives snuffed out so violently by the acts of a coward. These are the names that we should always keep in mind.

Yesterday a ton of people on the internet ran with the NY Posts’s misleading story about the Saudi national that was being questioned and posted hate-filled tirades about Arabs and Muslims in general. Not only are those people racists they’re also idiots. As the saying goes those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. Shortly after the Oklahoma City bombing the media stated that the suspect being sought was Middle Eastern and we all know how wrong that turned out to be.

CONSPIRACIES: I hate the fact that I have to address the idiotic conspiracy theories about yesterday’s tragedy but if I can get one person to not believe in that crap it will be worth it.

For those of you not conspiracy minded here is a great article explaining what the tin foil hat crowd is blathering on about.

For those of you who are a tin foil hat wearing cretin please choke on it. The tweet by the Boston Globe was after the initial explosions and the mysterious man on the roof was a guy who worked in the building. So please do the world a favor and drive a pick ax through your keyboards so we don’t have to put up with your government conspiracy fueled fantasy world ever again.

UPDATE 4/17/2013: The third person killed in the blast has been identified as Lu Lingzi, a Chinese graduate student at Boston University. Again another promising young life that was cowardly taken from this world.

UPDATE 4/18/2013: The FBI has released images of two men that they believe are suspects. They are considered to be armed and dangerous and should not be approached. If you have any information about these men you are asked to call 1-800 CALL FBI.

UPDATE 4/19/2013: As I’m sure you’ve heard by the hunt is over. 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev was shot and killed by police while his brother, 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been captured by law enforcement. Grievously the capture came at the expense of another life. MIT Police Officer Sean Collier was shot and killed by the suspects early in the morning. My prayers and condolences go out to his friends, family and fellow police officers.

Obviously my early prediction of the bombings being part of some kind of anti-tax protest were indisputably wrong. Am I happy that the suspects aren’t anti-tax white guys? Hell no I’m not fucking happy. Four people are dead because of these cowards. I don’t give a shit if they’re plaid with purple polka dots and come from the moon. I don’t care that they’re Chechnyan Muslims. I wouldn’t care if they were Hare Krishna Scientology Moonies. All I care about is justice being served.

POLITICS: The only this as bad as the tin foil hat conspiracy theorists are the political hacks. I’m not talking about media commentators, I’m talking about every Jane and Joe Blow on the internet pointing fingers at the other side of the aisle. Do you really think the victims care if they were blown up by someone from the left or right-wing? For those of you who eat, sleep and breathe politics you’re not helping in any way shape or form so save it or better yet take your politics and shove them up your ass.

Thanks to Bonnie for the links.

UPDATE 4/20/2013: No real news to update but I wanted to give just a little more commentary.

For those of you who deriding Islam because the suspects are Muslim I have two words for you, Eric Rudolph. Rudolph is not representative of all Christians so why would the Tsarnaev brothers be representatives of all Muslims? Not to mention that a motive hasn’t even been officially made public yet. For all we know they could be disgruntled Yankees fans or they could just be two assholes who saw themselves as better than everyone else like the Columbine cowards. If you’ll recall they had also set bombs except theirs failed to detonate.

For those of you who are having issues with the fact that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has not had his Miranda rights read to him you need to unwad your panties. While it is rare it is not unheard of. As a matter of fact this very scenario was discussed in my criminology class back in college. If there is a possible immediate threat to the public police can interrogate the suspect without Miranda. The exact example my professor used was in case of a bomb that had not been detonated but its location was still unknown. Then Miranda would not be a requirement.

So stop being so over-reactionary, no one is being oppressed. Besides, most of you wouldn’t know real oppression if it bit you in the ass.

UPDATE 4/21/2013: According to counter-terror expert Phillip Mudd the Boston Marathon bombings were more Columbine than 9/11 which is exactly what Steve Huff, the godfather of crimeblogging said to me as well.

The North Caucasus rebels, who engage the Russians in Chechnya among other locales, disavow any connection the bombings in Boston

“We are only fighting Russia, which is not only responsible for the occupation of the Caucasus, but also for monstrous crimes against Muslims,” the rebels said.

33-year-old Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority Officer Richard Donohue Jr. was shot by the suspects after exchanging fire with them. Donohue was struck in the leg which severed his femoral vein and artery causing him to bleed out. However he was resuscitated and is expected to recover. My prayers thoughts and thanks go out to Officer Donohue and his friends and family.

UPDATE 4/22/2013: Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will not be tried as an enemy combatant. I didn’t realize that was up for debate. Also the FBI believes that due to the amount of firepower they discovered the brothers may have been planning to hit additional targets.

Here is Dave Cullen’s piece on whether or not the Boston attack was more like Columbine than anything else.

There is already a free Dzhokhar Tsarnaev movement, or as the Twitter hashtag puts it #freejahar. It’s mostly based on conspiracy bullcrap but I bet there are some girls on tumblr who think he’s cute. I wish I could say I was surprised but I’m not. In the 13 years that I’ve been blogging I’ve run across a number of ‘fans’ of mass murderers. It shocked me at first but now I hardly even blink when the topic comes up.

WHY ONE POST TRENCH?: Not that anyone asked but I thought I would explain why I just keep updating the one post instead of making multiple posts. Normally this isn’t one of the types of crimes I normally post about. You guys know my usual topics. However since it had such a far-reaching impact on the country it was hard not to write about it. I also wanted to keep all the information in one place because of so much misinformation and downright ignorance being spread out there. Think of it as your reference card for the truth.

I believe your analysis is correct. I don’t think the date is a mere coincidence and I don’t believe foreign terrorists would bother to attack today (except in the highly unlikely event that they were deliberately trying to frame domestic terrorists). Also the target seemed too low profile for a foreign terror attack.

But I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what the investigation uncovers. In the meantime we can only offer the victims condolences and support.

    1. Not to mention that foreign terrorists tend to sacrifice themselves in their attacks.

  2. The_Shadow_Knows says:

So it was apparently CHECHNYAN terrorists?!? That’s a new one, at least for the United States. I wish Russia would take care of their own business and not let it spill over on us.

And conspiracy theorists can suck it. We have enough problems without your sad delusions adding fuel to the fire.

    1. I wouldn’t exactly call them terrorists in the popular sense anyway since we don’t know if they’re part of any network or not yet.

      1. Soobs says:

I would call them that. They did it to terrorize. The Unibomber was one man, also a terrorist. I hate that these losers not only kill in their initial assault, but they always end up killing and injuring law enforcement. I’m not very surprised that he was taken alive, he didn’t have any bombs, nor ammunition I would guess, left.

        1. I agree Soobs but today when you say terrorist most people automatically think of Al Qaeda or some group like that.

  3. All I can think of is the lives lost. So sadden to hear how Officer Sean Collier was killed. I’m glad they found the second terrorist.

  4. Sirkissa says:

Trench, I still haven’t found out WHY they did this. Any reports?

    1. No yet, just speculation at this point.

    2. The_Shadow_Knows says:

Their own uncle said they were “losers”. That’s probably at least part of the answer. This was a very amateurish attack with apparently no escape plan, so I doubt they were acting as part of an organized terror group. But we need to wait for more information to be sure.

Either way, the surviving punk deserves the needle.

      1. He deserves more than that but I’ll settle for the needle.
