Bell and Downs
An 11-year-old boy recently ran away from his home in Plain Dealing, Louisiana. He was gone for 25 hours before police found him relatively unharmed. I say relatively because the boy was said to have excessive bruising on his body. As it turned out the boy told police that his father and step-mother were physically abusive to him. DCFS further investigated and 43-year-old Ernest W. Bell III and 30-year-old Kristen M. Downs were charged with child abuse. They were also booked on drug and weapons charges as investigators found weed and guns in the home. The pair are said to have admitted smoking weed in front of the victim. They were also allegedly home-schooling the boy even though they did not register with the state.
This makes me wonder what percentage of runaways were victims of child abuse. When I was a teenager I was very tempted to run away. While my dad wasn’t physically abusive to me or my brother he was extremely verbally abusive to us and was physically abusive to my mom. It was very tempting for me to run away. The only thing that stopped was fear. I knew what happened to kids on the street even at that young age. I thought it was better to stay with the devil I know than the devil I don’t. Obviously that danger doesn’t stop a lot of runaways as they may have no other choice. In too many instances it may be a life or death situation.
My point is that the plight of runaway kids is just another byproduct of child abuse. We view child abuse as such an archaic and brutal practice that you think it would be on the decline yet we still can’t escape it.
If you are a runaway in need of help you can call the National Runaway Safeline at 1-800-RUNAWAY (1-800-786-2929) or visit their website.
Thanks to Louisiana Lori for the tip.
Here’s a feature I haven’t done in a while. The premise of Six Degrees of Dio is basically the Kevin Bacon game except it connects various bands back to my all time metal idol, the late Ronnie James Dio. Previously I’ve done bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden who perform the same genre of music as Dio. Now I thought I would focus on acts that you wouldn’t think could be connected to Dio, for example rapper Ice-T.
Now Ice-T did have the metal band Body Count but that’s not how he’s connected to Dio. Ice-T did a guest rap on the Black Sabbath song ‘The Illusion of Power’ on the 1995 Black Sabbath album Forbidden. And as we all know Dio was also in Black Sabbath. Here is that song…
Now I know some people are going to get butthurt over the fact that I’ve even mentioned Body Count because of the song ‘Cop Killer’. While I may not agree with the lyrics of cop killer I’d be a hypocrite if I said that song shouldn’t exist while a ton of metal bands have written way worse lyrics. Anyway here’s Body Count with ‘There Goes The Neighborhood’. (NSFW Lyrics)
If you can think of a band or act that can be connected to Dio let me know and I’ll use it for a future post.

In what is starting to be a routine occurrence Kenny Bartley is in trouble with the law yet again. Bartley pleaded guilty to the 2005 shooting death of Campbell County High Principal Ken Bruce. He was charged as an adult and his plea deal saw him sentenced to 45 years, However the plea was thrown out and a subsequent retrial saw Bartley getting time served.
Since his release from prison Bartley already had a few run ins with police. Now police are searching for him on charges that he allegedly assaulted a female relative. Bartley is currently considered a fugitive. If you’re in the Campbell County, Kentucky area police are asking that you call 911 if you see him.
Who would have thought that a released killer would re-offend said no one ever.
UPDATE 10/18/2014: Bartley turned himself into police. It seems the domestic violence issue was that he allegedly tried to choke his own mother after she refused to give him money for a cab.
“Kenneth put his arm around Rita’s neck and told her he would make her pass out if she did not give him the money,” according to the warrant.
Broyles said her son then took the cord from his headphones, twisted them around her neck and told her “she knew he could do it.”
Who is going to have to die this time before Bartley goes back to prison?
UPDATE 4/25/2015: Back in February Bartley pleaded guilty and was given probation. However it was 22 1/2 years probation under the condition he wear an ankle bracelet and will be living with his psychologist and her family in Virginia while receiving drug and alcohol treatment.
That’s one trusting psychologist and I really hope that her and her family come to no harm.
Arapahoe High School ahooting victim Claire Davis
I originally posted about the Arapahoe High School shooting in Centennial, Colorado here. That’s when, back in December of 2013. 18-year-old Karl Pierson stormed the school with a shotgun, shot and killed 17-year-old Clare Davis then turned the gun on himself. At the time of the shooting his motive was said to have been that he held a grudge against his debate team coach and was actively looking for him in order to kill him.
Recently the Arapahoe County Sheriffs Department released their report on the shooting. In the report it says that Pierson hoped the school shooting would start a conversation about bullying because Pierson claimed he was bullied in middle school. Too many people are willing to take that statement at face value. If you do you’re taking the word of a self-admitted psychopath. Let’s not forget that Pierson was said to have had this obsession with the need to always be right. You don’t develop that kind of personality trait overnight. While Pierson may have seen it as bullying it sounds more like that other people thought he was a jerk. Not to mention that I doubt Claire Davis was his bully. She probably didn’t even know him. And once again the conversation does not turns toward bullying. Every article I’ve read from about the report talks about identifying the next shooter before it happens. If anything school shooters just make the bullying problem worse.
Pierson was just another narcissistic, ego-maniacal coward who blamed everyone else for his own failings. To excuse his actions in any way is reprehensible.
Recently 29-year-old death metal singer Lane Steele Kozloff was recently arrested in Torrance, California for allegedly soliciting sex from a 14-year-old girl on craigslist. Investigators say that Kozloff placed an ad looking for a “lil girl”. Ew. Kozlofff is said to have arranged a meeting with the girl at a restaurant and that the back of his SUV was all laid out with a makeshift bed. Of course the 14-year-old girl was actually a federal agent. When you have a bed in the back of your ride you can’t really argue that you were just going to ‘hang out’.
I’m not going to mention his band or anything because the rest of the band probably had nothing to do with it however it is of interest that Kozloff has worked as a substitute teacher at a music school. I guess he can kiss that gig goodbye.
Again I’m left asking what is it with school teachers and coaches and Snapchat? This time 57-year-old Jeffrey M. Sirois has been arrested for allegedly sending a video of himself cranking it on Snapchat to a number of teens. Sirois was a girls soccer coach for a high school in Storrs, Connecticut and yes the video is said to have gone to some of the girls on his team.
Sirois claims that he meant to send the video to his girlfriend but accidentally sent it to some of the members of his team. I’m sorry but that’s not much better. No teacher or coach should ever be friends with their students or players on Snapchat. I can’t be the only one who thinks that is inappropriate. There’s a myriad of ways for faculty to get in touch with students these days, the disappearing picture app isn’t supposed to be one of them.
I’ve talked about the Haus Personal Vaporizer before. I bring it up because I was in Wal-Mart the other day and I thought I would check out one of their tanks, or clearomizer if you will, out of curiosity. The retail price was $7.95 and you know what? It’s a pretty decent tank. It holds a ton of juice and fit on both my eGo and Itaste batteries. It feels well put together too.
Now would I recommend this to an advanced vaper who knows how to change the coils in their tanks? No. However I would definitely recommend it to beginners and it’s also convenient if you find yourself tankless at 2am and know that you can run down to your local Wally World to get one.
Hey look, REM is in town.
I almost wasn’t going to post about this but it’s so comical I just had to comment.
Apparently an online petition has been started at change.org to pardon the West Memphis 3. The petition is directed at current Arkansas Governor Mike Bebee asking him to pardon the three calling their convictions a “travesty of justice” and “a sham”. By now you should know that I think the real travesty of justice is that these child killers are walking free.
Some of my fellow ‘nons’ have been up in arms about this but they really shouldn’t be worried at all. Firstly Gov. Bebee has said that “the appropriate place to seek exoneration of the men is the court system.” Secondly at the time the article from the Times Record was posted they only had 800 signatures. A week later they have about 1800. How many of those people do you think are even residents of Arkansas. If only a small minority of them are actually Arkansas voters than this isn’t even a blip on the Governor’s radar. The Last reason is that online petitions are a joke and no one takes them seriously. For all we know they could have been ‘signed’ all by the same person or bot. Considering the most successful online petition I can think of was the White House petition seeking the construction of the Death Star you can see how seriously they’re taken and that one had 25,000 signatures.
So good luck with that petition, you’re going to need it.
Ok, I’m over Barry Allen being so young. That said I kind of lied the first episode but I thought it suffered the same problem the first episode of Gotham did, shoving too much into one episode. I know origins are overdone in comic book adaptations but I would have preferred more of a slow burn (no pun intended) of Barry getting to know his powers and not just mastering them in one episode. Also I hope they didn’t kill off Weather Wizard but if you’re going to kill one of The Rogues I’d guess he’d be the guy to go.
What I did like is that I thought at the start they were tipping us off to the killer of Barry’s mom with Jesse L. Martin’s partner until the end sort-of-maybe reveal?
So while the first episode was a little problematic I’m looking forward to the rest of the season so far.
Casey Lee Chinn
As I’ve mentioned before, the most popular search term for this website is “omegle arrests”. Not just when Omegle happens to be in the news but every day. Not a day goes by when dozens of people are landing on this website after searching for Omegle arrests which leads me to believe that there’s a lot more illegal activity going on at Omegle than what we’re hearing. For those of you who are still unfamiliar with Omegle it is a webcam chat site that anonymously pairs users with someone to chat to. There is no registration for the site and if there is an age restriction it doesn’t feel like it’s being enforced at all. They do occasionally report some cases of abuse to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) but for every one they report how many cases of predatory activity are going unreported.
Just recently police in Anoka, Minnesota, arrested 23-year-old Casey Lee Chinn for the alleged kidnapping and sexual assaults of two 13-year-old girls. Chinn is said to have met the girls on Omegle then arranged to pick up the girls and take them to his house. He told the girls to be quiet because he lived at home with his folks. Some reports say that Chinn’s room was located in the basement. Take that for what you will. Police found the girls the next morning by tracking one of their cell phones. Also not surprising is that Chinn is a high school volleyball coach. I’m not saying that all high school coaches are child molesters but there have been enough of them recently that it’s not a surprise anymore.
I know I’m probably preaching to the choir at this point but if you have teen age kids please make sure that you’re aware of their web habits especially with webcams. No one wants to find their child in the basement of a child predator.
UPDATE 4/13/2015: Earlier this year Chinn pleaded guilty to kidnapping and sexual assault. Earlier this month he was sentenced to only 11 years behind bars.
