Why you should care about the NJ man who molested a 12-year-old boy using Kik

I’m sorry for posting a clickbait-like headline but I promise you that if I’m doing it there’s some actual information I think you need to know.

Recently 23-year-old Aaron Johnson Jr. of Mays Landing, New Jersey, was arrested for allegedly molesting a 12-year-old boy that he is said to have lured through the smart phone messaging app Kik. He may have also been grooming a 17-year-old boy through Kik as well.

The main reason I think this story is so important is because while it’s not exactly my hometown I did spend a lot of time in Mays Landing growing up. I know the street where Johnson lives and could still take you there to this day. So if you were wondering this can’t happen in your neighborhood, it can. It can happen anywhere no matter if your neighborhood is rich or poor or well-educated or not.

The other reason I found this story to be important is because of what the local police said. While it’s common knowledge to a lot of us it needs to be repeated. Even if a smart phone has no service through a phone company it can still be used for messaging apps over wi-fi. So even if your kids’ phone is discontinued from service they can still use it over wi-fi. Or if a predator were to give them an inactive phone it can still be used over wi-fi. So keep that on mind if you think your kids have an inactive phone it can still be used with a lot of apps.
