39-year-old James Hames, of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was arrested for allegedly taking a 14-year-old girl he met on Kik back to his place for sex after sneaking her out of her house at 2AM.
For the next story we stay in Baton Rouge where 25-year-old Matthew Chaney Walker is accused of allegedly using Kik to convince girls from ages 8 to 14, yes, that’s an eight, to send them explicit pictures of themselves then would extort them for more. No eight-year-old needs to be on Kik just for this very reason and if I’m not mistaken their terms of service say that you must be at least 13 which is still a questionable age for this app.
While your kids may think that Kik is just a messaging app used to talk to their friends it is also a known tool for pedophiles and sex offenders to gain access to your kids. Again I implore you to make sure you know what apps your kids are using and who’s in their friends list.
UPDATE 1/9/2016: Matthew Chaney Walker pleaded guilty to extortion, production of child pornography and receipt of child pornography. He’s looking at 30 years when sentenced.
