By now most of you have outraged one way or another about the arrest of 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed for bringing a homemade clock to school that school and law enforcement authorities mistook as a bomb. While the situation probably could have been handled better please allow me to offer a viewpoint I haven’t heard discussed by many people.
Now I can’t say with 100% certainty this wasn’t a case of Islamaphobia because I wasn’t there, but let me ask you a question. What is a school’s biggest fear? Any kind of school shooting or attack. Let’s take this situation out of Texas for a moment. Let’s say that this happened at any other school and a student the same age as Ahmed took a bomb to school and said it was just a clock and no teacher or resource officer acted on it, then it blew up taking a fair number of students with it. Everyone would be outraged that nothing was done about it.
Here’s another point that a lot of people overlooked as well. At least in my research a white student is more likely to bring a bomb to school than a Muslim student. Historically on this site the majority of bomb makers have been white kids.
So to me there was a lack of common sense all around. Personally I believe he shouldn’t have brought something to school in a case like that with wires and circuit-boards sticking out of it because there are a lot of technologically illiterate people out there including those in education and law enforcement positions. However the fact that the alarm went off repeatedly and nothing happened combined with the fact that there were no obvious explosives attached to it this should have been a non-story. I mean don’t we have more pressing issues to spend our collective time on than this freak occurrence? By the looks of Facebook I guess some of you don’t.
