35-year-old Benjamin Sovacool, a realtor from Naples, Florida, was recently arrested for allegedly having sex (child rape) with a 16-year-old girl that he met through the cam chatting site Omegle. Sovacool was allegedly fooling around with the victim at her house when a Sheriff’s deputy pulled up after a report of a strange car at the girl’s house. Police say that Sovacool took off out the back. Details on his actual arrest are sparse but one story says he tried telling police that he was in the area because of his real estate work.
As I have mentioned before, the search phrase ‘can I get arrested for using Omegle’ is one of the most common search phrases used to reach my website, more so than any search query involving Kik and Snapchat. However, I post more stories related to Kik and Snapchat than I do Omegle, which leads me to believe that Omegle is not being investigated by law enforcement as much as it should be.
Also as I’ve mentioned before for parents, Omegle is not an app, it’s a website that can be used by any device with a camera, that includes cell phones and tablets. Since it’s a website and not an app it may be more difficult to see if your kids are using it. In that case you should not only be checking what apps your kids have on their phones or tablets but also their browser history as well.
Be smarter than your kids and be smarter than the predators that seek to harm them. Your child’s welfare may depend on it.
