The 2016 Trenchie Awards

The 2016 Trenchie Awards

Best Movie: Captain America: Civil War. It’s what we finally wanted out of a superhero movie, people in tights beating the crap out of each other. Why BvS couldn’t grasp that is beyond me.

Best Album: 2016 was a pretty good year for music, my music anyway. Some great albums that came out in 2016, such as Lords of Black II, Flotsam and Jetsam’s self-titled album, and Dystopia by Megadeth. However, the one album that kept getting played over and over in my collection was Be Like The River by relative newcomers Devilskin. Give them a listen here.

Worst Album: I normally don’t do worsts anymore but I felt one album this year definitely deserved it and that’s Heavy Crown by Last in Line. Last in Line is Ronnie James Dio’s former backup band putting out an album of originals, but the album just sounds like nothing more than Vivian Campbell bitching about Dio for an hour. If you want a good throwback metal album, listen to the Resurrection Kings album instead.

Best TV Show: The Netflix comic shows have been pretty weak if you ask me. Daredevil Season 2 was a little off even though it had The Punisher and Luke Cage kind of bored me so I have to give it to The Flash once again. It’s so gloriously comic booky and fun that I just can’t miss an episode.

Best Comic: 2016 was not a great year for comic books. I mean what was up with Marvel’s publishing schedule when it came to Civil War II? Anyway, there was no one great series that stood out for me, but as far as single issues go it’s definitely DC Rebirth #1. The frame where Barry Allen pulls the original Wally West out of the Speed Force actually made me choke up a little bit.

Best Video Game: While I Mostly play games that are years old so I can get them on discount, I actually played a 2016 game and the game was Amazing. That game was Stardew Valley. I derived a lot of enjoyment out of this retro style farming simulator. Trust me, it’s more entertaining than it sounds.

Most Inane Political Agenda of 2016: Let’s see if I can think of something that has nothing to do with the election. Oh, I’ve got it, the FDA’s ruling on vaping that’s basically scheduled to kill the industry. Let’s take something that has gotten scores of people to quit smoking and regulate into the ground by imposing outlandish application fees of $1M.

Dumbasses of 2016: Again, let’s see if I can avoid invoking the election. Got it again. Let’s give it to all the people who watched ‘Making a Murderer’ and now think Stephen Avery is innocent. He’s not. He’s a cold-blooded killer who is exactly where he is supposed to be.

Biggest Jackass Celebrity of 2016: Once again I’m going to try to avoid the election especially since Trump won this category last year. Nope, can’t do it. It has to be Trump. He’s more celebrity than politician even though he is the President-Elect. While I’m not as fearful or venomous as a lot of Trump opponents, and I don’t require a safe space, nothing this man does fills me with any kind of sense of hope. The next four years are going to be a rough ride, and hopefully, in that time both major parties can come up with a candidate who isn’t an out of touch career politician or an inexperienced douchebag.

Chicago suspect charged with murder of 16-year-old Backpage child prostitute

Chicago suspect charged with murder of 16-year-old Backpage child prostitute

Antonio Rosales

32-year-old Antonio Rosales of Chicago is accused in the murder of 16-year-old Desiree Robinson in Markham, Illinois, on Christmas Eve. Rosales was attending a party in Markham when he saw an ad for Robinson on Backpage. Rosales had sex with Robinson, but when he couldn’t pay her he allegedly punched her and slit her throat. Robinson’s friends went to the house where the party was where they found Robinson’s body and a knife. The autopsy said that Robinson had been beaten and choked before having her throat slit.

While I hope that prosecutors do everything within their power to put this scumbag behind bars for the rest of his unnatural life, I hope they’re also looking to prosecute the people who put Desiree Robinson on Backpage to begin with. While some may argue that Ms. Robinson was on Backpage by choice, I find that very hard to believe. The first thing that indicates to me that she was being trafficked is that she had been reported missing as a runaway since November 29th. Pimps and traffickers often convince their underage victims to run away with promises of a life of luxury. Ms. Robinson’s mother also said that Desiree had contacted her but couldn’t tell her mother where she was. Victims of sex trafficking often can’t reach out to their family due to threats of violence against them and their family. I also have to wonder if her ‘friends’ were her pimp and enforcers. A number of prostitutes often travel with a ‘security guard’. They’re supposed to make sure that not only does the prostitute collect the money for the pimps, but they’re also supposed to make sure that the prostitute doesn’t run off. Sounds a lot like slavery doesn’t it?

As far as I’m concerned, whoever turned her out on Backpage is as equally culpable in her death as Rosales allegedly is. This isn’t even taking into account that Backpage once again allowed a minor to be sold for sex on their website which led to her violent death. Just another drop of blood money in their already overflowing coffers.

UPDATE 2/7/2017: The family of Desiree Robinson have made it known that they plan on suing Backpage for Desiree’s death. I hope they’re successful in that endeavor, however history is not on their side as all similar lawsuits filed against Backpage were dismissed.

Facebook fiend charged with raping 15-year-old Indiana girl

Facebook fiend charged with raping 15-year-old Indiana girl

Brandon M. Kolc

22-year-old Brandon M. Kolc of Gibraltar, Michigan, is accused of raping a 15-year-old Indiana girl that he met through Facebook. According to the victim she thought Kolc was 19 and lived in Illinois. The first time they had sex the victim says it was consensual, once in a church parking lot. Then the rape was said to have occurred in front of a casket factory where Kolc allegedly raped and choked the victim after she refused to consent.

By now this shouldn’t even be an issue anymore as most parents are already on Facebook, and should know how to keep tabs on their kids. If not you’re way behind the curve, and need to educate yourself on how these things work. Know their logins, know their passwords, know their Facebook friends and inspect their devices for multiple accounts. You are the parent, you can trust your kids all you want, but do you trust the strangers out there who are looking to prey upon your kids?

Robert Dion Ables

39-year-old Robert Dion Ables of Hutchins, Texas, is accused of allegedly extorting a 14-year-old Canadian girl for explicit images of herself. Ables is believed to have used the mobile messaging app Kik in order to attempt to blackmail his victim.

Investigators say that Ables posed as a 14-year-old girl when asking the girl for explicit photos. When he received them, he is said to have sent similar pictures of a different girl to the victim. He then threatened the victim that he would post her pictures on Facebook if she did not continue to send him pictures.

Ables allegedly admitted to the crime and said that he had been involved in online extortion since 2014 which he says has made him $50,000 in two years.

Ables said he obtained sexually explicit photographs of minors by contacting girls on KIK Messenger.

Another good warning for your kids is that if a stranger online claims to be or around their age, they still could be a predator. Posing as a child is just one of many ways that online predators use to gain your child’s trust. This is not a rare occurrence on Kik either. As I have mentioned many times in the past, Kik is inundated with sex offenders and pedophiles.

UPDATE 7/7/2017: Ables has been sentenced to 80 years in federal prison after pleading guilty.

Christopher Dean Martin

33-year-old Christopher Dean Martin of Roseville, California, has been arrested on charges of ‘having sex’ (child rape) with a 16-year-old girl. Martin allegedly posed as an 18-year-old on the mobile image sharing app Snapchat in order to convince a 16-year-old to come to his house for sex. Is it me or does this guy look nothing like an 18-year-old? As a matter of fact he looks older than 33.

snapchat-logo

Speaking of age, because I know some of you will try to argue this point, the age of consent in California is 18 and they’re pretty serious about it. According to Wikipedia, no one may have sexual contact with anyone under 18.

Police believe he may have other victims

Investigators believe Martin may have tried to lure other young girls around the Sacramento area. Anyone who suspects their child may have been a victim is asked to contact detectives at kquartarolo@roseville.ca.us.

As usual the same cautions apply, learn to use these apps, know who your kids’ online friends are, and hold on to their devices at night. If not, you may find your child in the home of a 33-year-old pervert.

Trench reviews Haus Premium Vape Juice

Trench reviews Haus Premium Vape Juice

So a couple of weeks ago I made a vaping mistake. I decided it was time to switch to a nicotine free juice which I purchased from my local vape store. Apparently, I wasn’t ready to go nicotine free just yet. I didn’t feel like I was having any physical withdraws, but I was definitely being cranky AF, as the kids say. I do have to say that it was nowhere near as bad as cigarette withdraw. So I decided to go back to my vape store and buy some 3mg juice, then it started to snow. It snowed to the point where I felt my local vape store didn’t feel as local as it normally did.

Since it was snowing I needed to go to Wal-Mart for the usual emergency supplies. Whenever I go to the World of Wallace I tend to check out in the cigarette checkout line to see if they have any new vaping stuff, that’s when I saw Premium Vaping Juice by Haus. Haus’ previous attempts at juice I categorized as gas station juice because the nicotine content was too high and it burned like gasoline, however their new juice was only 4mg of nicotine. Against my better judgement I bought a 30ml bottle of the Zomberry flavor (non-sponsored link) and I was pleasantly surprised as it actually tasted pretty good. Most commercial juices, in my opinion, have this real bad chemical or synthetic taste to it and the Haus Premium Juice did not. While not the best tasting juice I’ve ever had, it did in a pinch.

The only real problem I had with it was the price. I can get a 30ml bottle at my local vape store for $10 and change. A 30ml bottle of Haus Premium Juice was over $22 at Wal-Mart. However, it’s not so expensive that you would pass it up in an emergency situation like mine. So if you find yourself in need a of juice and you can’t make it to your vape store then the Haus Premium Juice is your best bet.

Additionally, I think that juices like this will be the future of vaping considering the FDA’s impending financial crackdown. While our local vape stores may become a thing of the past it’s a little nice to see that not all national brand juices will taste like hot garbage.

Snapchat sleaze caught in 15-year-old girl’s bedroom

Austin Prewitt

21-year-old Austin Prewitt of London, Kentucky, was recently arrested on third-degree rape charges when he was allegedly found in the bedroom of a 15-year-old girl. Before you even ask, the age of consent in Kentucky is 16, and the age gap between Prewitt and his victim is too large to be considered under the wrongly named Romeo and Juliet clause of the law.

Prewitt was said to have groomed the girl over the mobile image sharing app Snapchat. The victim’s father found the pair together in the girl’s bedroom and Prewitt reportedly fled. When police finally located Prewitt, he was said to be in possession of a stolen gun inside of his truck.

Think about that for a moment. A father finds some guy on top of his daughter who was in possession of a stolen gun. This could have quickly gone sideways in so many ways, we could have been talking about a murder instead.

If you’re allowing your kids to use any of these apps like Snapchat without any kind of supervision, you could be surprised one night by finding a stranger in their bedroom. Not only should you learn how to use these apps, but you should consider holding on to your kids’ devices at night for safe keeping. While neither of these actions are a perfect solution, they can go a long way in protecting your kids.

Was the Hug High student shot by police a special needs student? Does it matter?

Was the Hug High shooter a special needs student? Does it matter?

So far I’ve only seen this being reported in the Daily Mail so take that for what it’s worth. However, they are reporting that 14-year-old Logan Clark was a special needs student. Clark was the student at Hug High School in Reno, Nevada, who was shot by police after wielding knives in the high school.

What I haven’t seen reported is what his special need was. Since the bullying claim seems dubious, in my opinion, I would lay odds that it will be claimed he has Asperger’s. I am not saying that Asperger’s is a made up disorder or anything like that. What I am saying is, that when it comes to deflecting blame from those responsible for school violence a lot of suspects and defense attorneys will blame the crime committed on the suspect’s Asperger’s Syndrome. Asperger’s does not make anyone a killer and doesn’t corrupt anyone’s sense of right or wrong. To claim otherwise does a great disservice to people who truly have Asperger’s.

Previously, Clark’s father had spoken to the media saying that his son was protecting himself from bullying. Now, his mother has taken to Facebook to also blame other people besides her own son…

‘Our so-called protectors have a duty to set an example themselves. When there is an out of control child, police have a legal and moral duty to subdue rather than shoot to kill or maim.

‘What this boy needs most now are nurturing and the government’s protection from the violence of bullies. So government has failed in two ways. First by harming him, and second by not protecting him in the first place,’ she said.

‘You don’t shoot kids. You don’t shoot our kids. That should be a last resort if any resort.’

Except your son allegedly cut someone in the face before taunting police and refusing to drop his weapons. I don’t know where you got this idea that police have a legal and moral duty to subdue, but they do have a duty to protect as many people as possible and in this case it meant stopping your son before he could hurt anyone else. Personally, I think that parents have a moral and legal duty to prevent their kids from taking weapons to school.

On a somewhat unrelated note, Clark’s father was recently arrested for allegedly driving under the influence. I could never understand the stress that his family is going through right now, so this could be just a one time offense. However, if there is a history of alcohol abuse in the family that could explain so much of what is wrong with this story.

UPDATE 1/2/2017: Clark is being moved to a rehabilitation hospital and is said to be communicating with his family.

Ohio Kik Kreeper claims he’s been ‘playing’ with his child

Ohio Kik Kreeper claims he's been 'playing' with his child

30-year-old James Denney of Anderson Township, Ohio, has been arrested for allegedly trying to trade child porn on the mobile messaging app Kik. Denney was chatting on Kik with an undercover Homeland Security agent when he allegedly said the following…

In the Kik chat transcribed in the court documents, Denney said he’d been “playing” with his child for “a couple months” and that he was still “testing the waters.” He went on to say he didn’t want to “cause lasting issues or any major issues.”

Well, isn’t that benevolent of him?

Denny is also said to have sent a tor link to the DHS agent that was said to contain child porn.

No word on if Denney had any actual children or if he was just talking up a good game. I guess we’ll just have to wait to see if child molestation charges are forthcoming.

This is the part where I tell you that Kik is filled with sex offenders, pedophiles, and child porn traders. If I were you, I wouldn’t even let any of your under age kids use Kik no matter how many of their friends may use it.

New charges filed against Backpage bosses

New charges filed against Backpage bosses

Backpage CEO Carl Ferrer

California Attorney General Kamala Harris, has filed new charges against the heads of Backpage. After having the pimping charges against Backpage dismissed, Harris is now pursuing charges of money laundering, 26 counts of it to be exact. While these new charges have been filed against Backpage CEO Carl Ferrer and shareholders Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, I have yet to see any information whether or not arrest warrants have been issued for them. However, they are scheduled to be arraigned on January 11th.

While I admire Ms. Harris’ dedication to the cause, she needs to tread carefully. If these charges are dismissed as well, any further legal action by the Golden State after that could be seen as persecution by the courts. It also bothers me that Ms. Harris is slated to take her new position as a US Senator shortly. Her successor is said to be the Jerry Brown nominated Congressman Xavier Becerra. Will Attorney General Becerra continue the fight against those who profit from sex trafficking with the same devotion that Ms. Harris has? Unfortunately, that remains to be seen. However, the state is looking for victims of Backpage…

The attorney general’s office encourages anyone who was a victim of trafficking via Backpage to file a report with the California Department of Justice by emailing backpage@doj.ca.gov.

I can’t say I’m feeling confident about these new charges. While the Communication Decency Act seems to be inapplicable to money laundering charges, I’d be more confident about these latest charges if they made more details public. So far Backpage has been a slippery eel when it has come to being pursued by the law. Hopefully these new charges will finally cut the heads off of this greedy and heartless monster.

UPDATE 1/26/2017: Not surprisingly, Backpage wants the latest round of pimping charges against them thrown out. However, the prosecution is sticking to their guns and further reiterating the money laundering aspect of the charges…

Prosecutors say they have new evidence to justify the case. They claim Backpage illegally funneled money through multiple companies and created various websites to get around banks that refused to process transactions.

Now that the Senate claims that Backpage was editing their ads to make them appear legal, these criminal charges may finally have a leg to stand on.

UPDATE 2/11/2017: Earlier this week, Backpage’s legal team once again tried to have the charges dismissed on free speech grounds. The presiding judge did not make a ruling but may do so on March 10th.
