Why does a child advocacy group want Backpage’s sex ads to stay open?

Why does a child advocacy group want Backpage's sex ads to stay open?

Please watch the following video from Fox 23 in Tulsa about Backpage and their so-called self-imposed shuttering of the adult ads section…

First off, I’m usually not one to tell police how to do their job, but to the unidentified Tulsa Detective, less prostitution means fewer victims of trafficking. That’s a good thing. Just because 99% of your stings are done online doesn’t mean that your job is dependent on Backpage staying in business. You would think that someone whose job it is to protect the public would be happy that there would be less of a crime instead of maintaining the status quo.

The part of the video I really want to talk about comes at the 1:21 mark where a screenshot from child advocacy group Children of the Night is shown in support of Backpage. They claim that Backpage helps them find trafficking victims in order to rescue them. I would argue that without Backpage there wouldn’t be as near as many people that they would need to rescue but Children of the Night’s motives may be more financial than altruistic.

Children of the Night makes money from Backpage. The group’s director, Dr. Lois Lee, has even admitted as such on this very website. That’s not even mentioning that Dr. Lee appears to be very chummy with Backpage attorney Liz McDougall. Some may call that a conflict of interest, I know I do. It seems that Dr. Lee believes that Backpage can be both the source and solution of 80% of all online prostitution in the US. In the past I’ve referred to that as the Backpage Paradox.

Even though Backpage’s sex ads still thrive on their website, only in a different section, if the ads were to disappear it would lead to a vast reduction in he number of women and girls being trafficked for sex, and isn’t that the true goal?

Kik kreeper tried to arrange rape of relative through Omegle

Kik kreeper tried to arrange rape of relative through Omegle

Blaine A. Mallon

Police in Austin, Texas, have arrested 27-year-old Blaine A. Mallon for allegedly trying to find an accomplice in order to rape a female relative of his. Mallon is said to have gone on random webcam chat site Omegle in order to find someone to help him rape a woman that he knew by asking “looking for someone to help me rape a girl I know. Interested?” The conversation then allegedly moved to Kik where Mallon is said to have given the person he was talking to all the information about his intended victim including…

…photos of the victim; victim’s home address; description of the victim’s car; the victim’s work hours; information about when the victim’s boyfriend is leaving town; and a statement that said, “She lives alone. Great Body. Very much a good girl mentality. Should be a lot of fun.”

Thankfully, the second person went to authorities with the information that he had and police were able to determine that the man requesting the rape was Mallon. The victim told police that Mallon was related to her and was around him on a regular basis. No word on if that relation was through marriage or blood.

When Mallon was confronted with what information police had he reportedly said that the whole plot was just a fantasy.

Mallon allegedly told police that he wouldn’t hurt the victim. He further stated that he would have stopped the rape from happening by telling the other person the victim’s address was fake, according to APD.

Oh, is that the case? Then we’re sorry to have taken up your time sir, you’re free to go, which is what Mallon probably imagined what police were going to say after telling them that reason they they’ve never heard before.

Guys like Mallon make up way too many users in places like Kik and Omegle. If you don’t want your kids conversing with would-be rapists, you may want to keep an eye on their app and internet use.

Craigslist drug deal leads to two dead and two arrested

Craigslist drug deal leads to two dead and two arrested

Late Friday night, Michigan State Police found the bodies of Joseph Michael Carson, 31, and Anthony Lee Hammond, 39,both of Flint, Michigan. Both men had been shot to death in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Owosso, Michigan. The two men were there to sell weed to two brothers from Grand Rapids that they had met through craigslist.

Instead, the two Grand Rapid brothers had allegedly intended on robbing the pair and shot them. The two brothers, ages 31 and 23, have been arrested, but as of yet their names have not yet been released.

In case you were wondering, even in states where recreational marijuana is legal it’s still illegal to sell it online. In either case Michigan is not one of those states. If you sell anything on craigslist you’re taking your life in your hands, but if you’re selling something illegal those chances increase dramatically. I’m not saying that these men deserved to die, but there is obviously no honor among criminals.

UPDATE 2/3/2017: The suspects have been named as 31-year-old Otis Smith and 23-year-old Anthony Holloway, and both being held without bond.

UPDATE 12/11/2017: Both Smith and Holloway were convicted of murder back in October. Smith was just recently sentenced to life without parole. Holloway is scheduled to be sentenced later this week.

Texas Teacher blackmailed by student she was having sex with

Sandy Doan

27-year-old Sandy Doan of Dallas, Texas, has allegedly fallen into the same pitfalls of too many teachers these days. She started communicating with one of her middle school students over Instagram and Kik (no Snapchat?) before starting a sexual relationship with the student. Normally I would be throwing sarcastic quotes around about ‘having sex’ and ‘relationship’, but it’s hard to call the kid a victim in this instance.

Instead of just the usual bragging to his friends, this kid had the criminal wherewithal to allegedly blackmail Doan into giving him thousands of dollars for his silence.

“Anit [expletive] watch ima start getting the pics and everything ready … to show the cops right I anit playing,” the messages read, according to police.

Doan, also known as Thao Doan, wasn’t arrested until the kid’s mother found out that her son was receiving large amounts of money from Doan. The kid’s mother also said that he has a lengthy juvenile criminal record. However, police sources say that the then 14-year-old blackmailer will probably not face any charges. Why in the blue hell not?

While Sandy Doan is allegedly ultimately responsible for landing herself in the situation in the first place, the extortion of $28,000 is not something that should just be chalked up to boys being boys. To not charge him shows other kids in his community that crime does pay.

Stalker tries to hire rapist on craigslist

Stalker tries to hire rapist on craigslist

Jared W. Baratka

21-year-old Jared W. Baratka of Plymouth, Minnesota, had been previously convicted of stalking a teenage girl. He was sentenced to 90 days jail and 36 months probation, but the jail time was suspended, because letting stalkers run around free is such a good idea. After being picked up for one of his many alleged probation violations, police found emails on his phone that has led to him being held on $1 million bail.

Baratka allegedly took out an ad on craigslist looking for someone to rape the girl that he was stalking, and for them to record it.

A 56-year-old man said he answered a personal ad on craigslist, which turned into a request to kidnap and sexually assault a teen girl in Plymouth. The man told police that, as a hobby, he roleplays on Craiglist in the adult section, but that in this instance it became too real when the man he was in communication with — who police believe to be Baratka — supplied photos of the girl, an address, and the make and model of the car driven by the girl.

The man supplied communications he had with Baratka to officers in which Baratka encourages him to kidnap and sexually assault the girl while filming it.

The informant repeatedly asked if Baratka was serious, to which Baratka responded “I definitely 100 percent want this.” He allegedly offered $100 to the man during their communications.

This is far from the first case of someone soliciting the rape of another person on craigslist, in what I refer to as ‘rape by proxy’. Tragically, a number of the ones who have tried this before have been successful. The one that leaps immediately to mind is Jebidiah James Stipe, who orchestrated the rape of his ex in Wyoming through craigslist in California. Only by sheer luck was Baratka not able to carry out his plan.

West Liberty-Salem High gunman wanted victim to shoot him

West Liberty-Salem High gunman wanted victim to shoot him

As an update to the shooting at West Liberty-Salem High School in Ohio, a second person was also injured in the shooting, but was said to have injuries that were not life threatening.

This past Monday, gunman Ely Ray Serna was in court and denied the charges, which I imagine is the juvenile equivalent of pleading not guilty. His attorney actually requested that he be allowed to return to his home with his parents. Thankfully, the judge ordered him held in juvenile detention for now, noting that the shooting “involved significant planning.”

Serna’s sister says that her brother is not a monster, but is unclear what his motive may have been.

Now, in a new Sheriff’s report that was released today, Serna allegedly apologized to Logan Cole after shooting him. Then Serna reportedly offered the gun to Cole and asked him to pull the trigger while the shotgun was pointed at Serna’s forehead. Cole is said to have refused the offer. The 17-year-old gunman then kicked the gun across the floor before being apprehended by school staff.

I can honestly say that’s the first time I’ve ever heard of a school shooter offering his victim some form of restitution, not to mention showing signs of regret in the middle of their spree. In my opinion this doesn’t seem like the typical school shooting where the gunman is seeking some kind of fame or retribution. To me it seems more like he was trying to commit suicide by cop then lost his nerve after shooting Logan Cole. That in no way should be seen as an excuse for his actions. He shot Logan Cole twice with a 12 gauge shotgun at close range, once in the chest and again in the arm. For committing such a wanton act of violence he should be tried as an adult. That decision could be made as early as this coming Friday when Serna returns to court.

UPDATE 1/28/2017: Victim Logan Cole is said to have a shotgun pellet in his heart. While the injury is not life threatening at present, if left untreated could cause a heart infection.

This is said to be the GoFundMe set up for Logan Cole by his father.

UPDATE 2/3/2017: Today in court, a judge ordered a competency hearing for Serna, and that he remain in juvenile detention for now.

UPDATE 2/6/2017: Logan Cole has been released from the hospital, and is now home. His father states that he is still at risk of infection due to the shotgun pellets that they couldn’t retrieve.

UPDATE 2/17/2017: Logan Cole has returned to class, but is currently wearing a brace on his torso that should be removed within months.

UPDATE 6/12/2017: Serna will be tried as an adult, and his bond has been set at $1 million.

UPDATE 6/15/2017: A judge has ordered the trial to start on August 21st and has made it known he wants the trial to conclude before the start of the school year so there can be closure.

UPDATE 6/25/2017: Serna has entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. I can’t wait for the reasoning behind this one. Take a drink if they mention Asperger’s.

UPDATE 7/13/2017: Serna has been transferred to a psychiatric facility.

Backpage sued by victims of child sex trafficking in four different states

Backpage sued by victims of child sex trafficking in four different states

Five separate underage victims who claim that they were trafficked on Backpage for sex are suing the embattled website in four different states. The victims, ranging in ages from 14 to 16 at the time of the crimes, have filed suits in California, Texas, Washington and Alabama. Previous lawsuits like this have been defeated in the courts because of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. However, since the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found that Backpage allegedly edits the ads to make the victims appear of age, that could make their CDA defense precarious.

The only people who Backpage really listens to are dead Presidents, so hurting them financially really is the best way to put them out of the sex trade business, and yes, they are still making money from sex trafficking ads.

Former school janitor charged with trading child porn on Omegle

Former school janitor charged with trading child porn on Omegle

Douglas Mehan

As I have mentioned before, one website that doesn’t get nearly as much attention as it should in the media is Omegle. It is the anonymous webcam chat site whose motto encourages you to ‘Talk to Strangers!’ One of the more popular search quries that lead people to my site is ‘can you get arrested for using Omegle?’ This leads me to believe that not only are predators grooming underage children on Omegle, but it’s also being used to trade child porn.

For example, 50-year-old Douglas Mehan is a former school custodian from Milford, Connecticut. He’s been arrested for allegedly using Omegle to trade child porn. While Omegle definitely appears to have a child predator issue, that doesn’t prevent them from contacting the NCMEC when they find one, and that’s exactly what they did here.

Once police caught up to Mehan he is said to have said that he only started getting into child porn within the past few months. That didn’t stop him from allegedly having 378 child porn videos on his laptop. I’m guessing that his interest in this has been for more than just a few months. These scumbags always seem to have some kind of story when they’re caught, to try to lessen what they’ve already done. In my opinion they’re justifying it to themselves as anyone else wouldn’t care how long he was viewing child porn as most would be equally appalled by his activity.

As a warning to parents, Omegle is not an app, it’s a website that can be used by any internet connected device that has a camera. This includes, smart phones, tablets and laptops. This means that there will be no app icon to look for and you would need to check your children’s browser history to see if they’ve been visiting the site.

Garden State RSO indicted for being a Kik kreeper

Garden State RSO indicted for being a Kik kreeper

Bryan Sanderson

24-year-old Bryan Sanderson of Middletown, New Jersey, was convicted in 2013 of endangering the welfare of a child. This resulted in Sanderson being placed on the sex offender registry for life. Apparently, being on the registry did not discourage Sanderson from engaging in illicit behavior as he has been given a 24 count indictment for allegedly sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl he met through Kik.

Police say that during their investigation that they not only found Sanderson to be in possession of child porn but that he was trying to solicit sex from 12 and 13-year-olds as well. The investigation started when Sanderson was pulled over while having a 14-year-old girl in his car. Investigators believe that there may be more victims.

Anyone with information is asked to contact prosecutor’s Detective Michael Acquaviva at 732-431-7160, ext. 2233.

Anyone who wants to make an anonymous report can call the Monmouth County Crime Stoppers confidential tip-line at 1-800-671-4400. Tipsters can also text “MONMOUTH” and their tip to 274637 or they can email a tip via the website at www.monmouthcountycrimestoppers.com.

Not only does this show that Kik is still rampant with sex offenders and pedophiles, but sex offender registries don’t do much to keep predators from re-offending. Instead they should be kept in jail longer rather than be given probation.

Cook County Sheriff confirms Backpage is still running sex ads

Cook County Sheriff confirms Backpage is still running sex ads

Cook County (IL) Sheriff Tom Dart

If you’ve been reading this site for any substantial amount of time, you’ll recognize the name Tom Dart. He is the Sheriff of Cook County, Illinois, which is one of the largest jurisdictions in the country. Sheriff Dart is also one of the most dedicated opponents of Backpage. He is largely credited as being the man who got the credit card companies to stop doing business with Backpage, even though Backpage had an injunction placed on him from doing so in the future.

Sheriff Dart recently spoke with the press to say that he is skeptical of Backpage’s recent actions of shuttering the adult section of their site. That section of Backpage housed thinly veiled ads for prostitution and child prostitution. Sheriff Cook also stated that the prostitution ads have merely moved to the personals section of the site. As I previously posted, while it may be free to place a personal ad on Backpage, you still have to pay for upgrades to make the ad more visible.

A couple days after Backpage made the switch, Dart said his officers set up a “date” with one of the women advertising on the site and confirmed she was charging for sex.

“We went out and arrested a person off the site,” he said. “We answered one of their ads and it was no different.”

So the fight is still far from over. While Backpage may have made a grand gesture, along with complaining about how their supposed free speech rights have been trampled, women and girls are still being trafficked on Backpage. Backpage may claim that the ads being posted in the personals are out of their hands, but as we all know they have a staff of moderators that the Senate alleges edited the prostitution ads to make them appear more legitimate. If they can use their moderators for that then they can use them to keep sex trafficking ads out of the personals, but I highly doubt they will.
