Lately, I’ve been going back to the older posts on the site and correcting grammar and spelling mistakes. It’s allowing me to revisit stories I haven’t thought about in over a decade. Back then I was able to devote a lot of detail to these stories since school shootings were still a rarity compared to today. I was even able to dedicate a lot of time to international school shootings such as the ones at Geschwister Scholl School and Albertville-Realschule in Germany, and the ones at Jokela High School and the Kauhajoki School of Hospitality in Finland. Today, school shootings have become so common not only can I not dedicate as much time to them as I used to but I have to skip some as well. That includes domestic as well as international. Within the past year, Russia, and one of its disputed occupied territories have experienced a number of school attacks. I’ve been unable to post about any of them until now and still, I’m only going to briefly post about it.
Back in mid-October, there was a very deadly school shooting at the Kerch Polytechnic College in the city of Kerch on the Crimean Peninsula. As you may know, Crimea is currently occupied by Russian forces while Ukraine contends Crimea is their sovereign land. 18-year-old Vladislav Roslyakov took a gun to the school and killed 20 victims before taking the coward’s way out. Recently, it came to light, at least to my light, that Roslyakov was what’s known online as a columbiner. Columbiners are kids who have an unhealthy obsession with not only the Columbine killers but most other school shooters and some mass killers as well. According to Crime Russia, Roslyakov told a friend that he was planning the shooting and was calling it Columbine No. 2. According to Wikipedia, Roslyakov wore a t-shirt which said ‘Hatred’ in Russian as a nod to Eric Harris. Of course, there were accusations of bullying causing the shooting but again, when you’re obsessed with weapons and school shootings and act like an all-around misanthrope you can’t blame everyone else because you’re ‘different’. Also much like a lot of today’s school shooters, Roslyakov wasn’t even born until after Columbine. The columbiners also cling to the myth that Columbine was caused because of bullying. Roslyakov’s bullying might have been in his own mind since by some reports Roslyakov was popular, much like Eric Harris was actually popular.
My point is that if you really want to identify the next potential school shooter, parents, teachers, and other officials need to be wary of these columbiners. Even before the advent of social media, they’ve been congregating on the internet. Today you might be surprised to find out how many groups there are on social media dedicated to the Columbine cowards and the plethora of copycats that have followed. If you know one of these kids, tell someone. It may turn out to be nothing, or you could prevent another Parkland or Columbine from happening.
