Backpage pimp of murdered Illinois girl sentenced

Joseph Hazley

If you’re unfamiliar with the story of Desiree Robinson she was the 16-year-old girl who was murdered outside of Chicago after being prostituted on Backpage. On Christmas Eve of 2016, 32-year-old Antonio Rosales couldn’t pay Desiree at a party in Markham, Illinois so he allegedly brutally murdered her instead. Rosales was said to have beat her and slit her throat.

However, Rosales wasn’t the only one facing charges when it came to Desiree. Her pimp Joseph Hazley was convicted back in March on federal charges of sex trafficking conspiracy, sex trafficking a minor and transporting victims of sex trafficking across state lines. Hazley had previously ‘bought’ Desiree from another pimp for a promise of  $250.  When Hazley found out that Desiree had been murdered, he tried to get another woman to work for him because in Hazley’s words, “Now that she’s gone, I got no money coming in.”

Yesterday, Hazley was sentenced and was facing life in prison, however,  he was sentenced to 32-years behind bars. Desiree’s mother, Yvonne Ambrose, had asked the judge for a life sentence stating…

“Joseph Hazley sold my baby. My baby! As if she was a piece of clothing! Our ancestors fought hard to keep us free from the same slavery that Joseph Hazley put my baby in.”

However, after sentencing, Ms. Ambrose said that she was satisfied with the sentence.

Prior to sentencing, Hazley tried playing the victim…

“I know the story the government believes and released to the media is far from the truth,” he said.

“I feel like no matter what I do or how hard I try, no matter how good my intentions are, everything just seems to take a turn for the worst,” Hazley said. “Like I’m standing in quicksand. The more I try, the more I sink.”

This from a man who not only ‘bought’ Desiree Robinson from another pimp but also tried to cover up any evidence of his connection to her. I would even wager a bet that Hazley believes what he’s saying as many pimps and traffickers feel like they’re doing nothing wrong at all as they violently coerce these girls into slavery.

  1. ? says:

Once someone is in the crime culture (and it is a culture) it seems impossible to get out. The choices he made within that scenario are as unforgivable as they are unfortunate. Maybe he wanted out. Maybe he wanted to change. The fact of the matter is that he CHOSE to act in a contrary manner to his alleged philosophy on the matter. Honestly, I think he’s sorry that it came to murder, but the only catalyst being that he got caught. Regardless of all the fluffing he tried to do, he’s guilty. He deserves every day behind bars and probably more.
