Trench reviews Justice League Dark: Apokolips War

It’s been a while since I reviewed a DC Animated movie. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been watching them. I’ve always found most of the DC Animated movies to be better than a lot of the live-action movies. For example, I’d much rather watch the animated Under the Red Hood than The Dark Knight live-action film. Under the Red Hood is the best DC Animated movie in my opinion, but I digress.

From what I understand, Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is the finale of the DC Animated Movie Universe that started with Justice League: War or Flashpoint Paradox if you’d prefer. These series of movies were basically the New 52 in movie form with some classic stories like The Death of Superman and Hush sprinkled in. Some of the DCAMU movies were good, I even consider one almost great. However, much like the New 52 itself, while enjoyable, some of the movies were just ‘meh’.

Apokolips War, in my opinion, was one of the great movies of this run and it had an air of finality all throughout the story.

All the voice actors from the DCAMU have returned to reprieve their previous roles and give great performances. I love that Matt Ryan plays the both live-action John Constantine and his Arrowverse counterpart. Tony Todd as Darkseid is also a brilliant casting choice.

I won’t give away any spoilers, however, this is a grim movie.  There is a lot of death and violence in this movie. This movie has a pretty hard R rating. Just because Superman is on the cover doesn’t mean it’s for kids.

Ok, maybe a tiny spoiler so If you don’t want to know, stop reading now.

The ending, and I mean the very end, has a little too much deus ex machina for me. However, it could mean we’re getting a possible DC Animated Movie version of Rebirth.
