Toddlers kept in cages, but there’s more to the story

Toddlers kept in cages, but there's more to the story

A 38-year-old mother of 5, Malista Ness-Hopkins, was released on bail September 12 after having been arrested for five felony counts of child abuse on July 28. The children, ages 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6, were removed from the home by Accomack County Social Services in response to a complaint made about the home. Social workers found the 2- and 3-year-old children in cribs with makeshift tops screwed onto them. The home was said to be filthy, infested with bugs, and reeking of urine. The children were also reported to be dirty and covered with insect bites.

Usually, I would be totally unsympathetic toward any parent who treated their children this way and who lived in such deplorable conditions, but something struck me differently in this case.

First, Ms. Ness-Hopkins’ attorney told the court she was an overwhelmed single mother, which is easy to believe, with 5 children in the home ranging from 1 to 6 years old. Probably at least 3 of them were in diapers or pull-ups, which would be enough to overwhelm any parent, single or not.

Second, one sentence in the story spoke volumes to me–the young (age 33) father of some of the children died unexpectedly in May of 2016. This most likely left Ms. Ness-Hopkins depressed, grieving, alone, etc. She reportedly was a college student who made honor roll in 2010, so her issues are not due to lack of intelligence, but probably more due to depression and isolation. With no reports being made until the oldest child was 6, apparently she was able to care for them adequately until July of this year. That’s after over a year of trying to do it all on her own while dealing with the grief of losing the father to her kids. Cut her some slack, maybe.

The judge who granted bail did so on the condition she gets a mental health evaluation and follows any treatment recommendations.

The Virginia child abuse hotline number is 800-552-7096.

A roach infested trailer is not a clown car

Not the trailer in question

I’ve had fun at the expense of people who live in trailers in the past. To be honest I’ve been in some trailers that would put a lot of homes to shame. Unfortunately this is not the case in this story and this is what tends to perpetuate the trailer park stereotype.

Recently in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, SEVEN people were arrested on child abuse charges after investigators allegedly found FIFTEEN children living in the trailer under squalid conditions. For the mathematically challenged that’s TWENTY-TWO people living in one trailer. Even if it’s a double wide that is some pretty crowded conditions.

With seven adults living in the ‘home’ you would think that they could all pitch in together and keep the place reasonably clean. You would also be wrong. According to reports the place was covered in roaches, the pre-requisite animal feces and that the kids were swimming in an above ground pool filled with algae. All 15 kids were taken into protective custody by DSS.

To perpetuate the stereotype even further there was this little tidbit within the article…

Lt. Kevin Bobo said one man’s ex-girlfriend and current girlfriend were living in the home. Investigators said one woman’s husband and ex-boyfriend were also living in the home.

The only way this situation could have been any more trailer trashy is if they also had a meth lab.

Seven people are charged with unlawful neglect of children in this case:

Cherie Rose Toney
Aaron Eugene Dodson
Andy Lee Dunbar
David Russell Hayes
Brianna Hope Henderson
Karen Lynn Dunbar

Spider eggs in a toddler's hair

(Special thanks to Catalina for the post)

Secoy Koch-Miller

Wisconsin woman accused of raising kids in squalor:

Burnett woman charged with child neglect:

I admit, I’m still trying to lose some post-pregnancy weight, so losing my appetite after reading about this case isn’t a big loss. However, the details leave me feeling infuriated and wondering how anyone could be so devoid of any sympathy and compassion, especially for their own offspring.

Okay. On to the story.

25-year-old Secoy S. Koch-Miller of Burnett, WI is the “mother” of two boys, ages 2 months and 2 years. The baby daddy of the infant, while in jail, reported to detectives that when he had been at the home of Koch-Miller, the residency seemed uninhabitable. Articles don’t state the reason for his jail sentence, but we do know he had at least enough sense to report the squalor.

Detectives then spoke with human services, and the case worker, familiar with Koch-Miller, stated she had visited the home beforehand but was always denied entrance. Hmm…I wonder why.

Luckily, baby daddy’s statement was enough to get a warrant, and officers and the case worker entered the home last November. What they found was extremely deplorable.

The craptastic home was filled with so much junk, that some rooms were blocked off due to the sheer volume of stuff that had been hoarded.

According to one article, “the kitchen contained several dirty dishes, dead flies and other bugs and cat feces. The inside of the refrigerator and freezer was covered in black mold, maggots and decayed food. There was cold water, but no hot water, and the bathroom had only a toilet. The pipes for the shower and bath appeared to have been cut off. The toilet did not appear to be working.”

Yup, the toilet wasn’t working because the septic tank was too full.

Upon examination of the children, the 2-year-old was found to weigh only 20 pounds. That’s not a huge surprise considering what had been found in the fridge. The poor boy had bug bites all over his body, a bruised eye, and had spiders and spider eggs in his hair. (The thought of the little guy like that makes me want to cry!) To make horrific matters worse, he also had a respiratory and ear infection that required antibiotics.

The infant, on the other hand, was found in better condition, growing at a “more normal rate.”

Fortunately, the children were placed in foster care and the toddler has gained weight.

Koch-Miller was charged with neglecting a child causing bodily harm, a felony, and neglecting a child, a misdemeanor. An initial court appearance is scheduled for March 10th.

And as far as the home is concerned, Burnett town leaders are considering the condemning the building. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

14-year-old dies in house with hundreds of animals

Lydia Price

Mom charged after son dies at ‘deplorable’ home overrun with animals:

In Berwyn, Illinois a mentally handicapped 14-year-old boy was found in the backyard of a home, only partially clothed and unresponsive. He later died at the hospital of bronchopneumonia. You basically get bronchopneumonia from a common cold that goes untreated. If that is the case it would not come as a surprise because of what investigators found in the house.

49-year-old Lydia Price was charged with criminal abuse and neglect of a disabled child resulting in death, endangerment of a child, animal hoarding and cruel treatment.

Not only did they find four other children in the house, ages 12-18 who had never been to school, but they found so many animals in the house it would make some zoos jealous.

Found inside the house were…

109 cats, three dogs, 39 c*ckatiels, two kinkajous, a large racoon and other exotic animals.

Do you want to know what some of those other animals were? How about hundreds of hissing c*ckroaches? Those aren’t your normal filthy home c*ckroaches. These are imported c*ckroaches that some people keep as pets. They are from Madagascar and you’re not supposed to have this many in a house considering it would be introducing a foreign species to the environment which could be disastrous.

30 visits from police, 5 DHS complaints and meth ends in in the death of 3 angels

Abuse complaints preceded Del City childrens fire deaths,DHC says

Del City couple arrested on charges in fire deaths

Parents arrested and charged in death of 3 children

Where, oh where do I begin with this one?  Three children all under the age of 5-years-old lost their lives in a RV fire on January 4th, after their mother Stephanie Mae Dunham (25) left them alone and locked the door from the outside trapping them inside.  Yes, you read that right this was an RV, not a trailer home, it was inoperable, parked behind her mother-in-laws house and used extension cords for electricity.  A space heater left plugged in and unattended on the front passenger seat is believed to be what caused the fire.

Yes, if you hadn’t guessed mommy is a meth head, and tested positive for being under the influence at the time she left the children… oh yeah and she is five months pregnant.  Nice!  Ladies and Gentlemen we have before us a real class act.  The children Christopher Jr. (4), Crystal (3) and Kailey (1) died from smoke inhalation and thermal burns.  The father Christopher Dunham  (25) was at work when the fire broke out, but daddy is no angel. I’ll get into that more in a minute.

This family has a history with DHS and the police, with no less than 30 reported visits from the police since 2002 ranging from domestic disturbances to suicide attempts and 5 total calls to DHS since 2008 regarding suspected abuse of the children.  Of course the police are not commenting and DHS is blaming them, so begins the blame game.  In my opinion both of these entities sworn to protect and serve FAILED, had they done their jobs properly those three babies would be alive today.  I won’t even get into my questions as to why these babies’ grandmother allowed them to live, not only with two drug addicts suspected of abuse and in a violent relationship, but in a freakin inoperable RV BEHIND her house.  I mean I can tell you this my mother-in-law, would never stand for that.  I may not always see eye to eye with her but she loves my kids and would never allow them to be in an unsafe environment, regardless of whether I liked it or not, never mind my sisters and family.

How about, for shits and giggles, we take a look at the history these two pieces of trash had with DHS.  Ready for it?  Here we go.

–         Sept. 17, 2010, daddy is accused of sexually abusing their 3-year-old daughter, after the investigation a finding of “unsubstantiated-services recommended” was made and there were NO additional safety concerns.

–         June 25, 2010, a complaint that the children are being exposed to domestic violence.  The complaint screened out due to no specific act of domestic violence, abuse or neglect was sited.

–         Nov. 13, 2009, a complaint that the children are being left with an inappropriate caregiver.  Sex Offender??  Mom denied the allegations, DHS reports the children are healthy and recommends an adult while in the home of the “questionable” caregiver supervises them.

–         Oct. 13, 2009, complaint that mommy is using drugs in the presence of the children, there was physical violence between the parents in front of the children, mom struck Crystal and caused injury.  DHS investigated, mom denied drug use and witnesses attested to that but expressed concern regarding dad’s temper.  The findings “unsubstantiated-services recommended”

–         April 17, 2008, complaint Christopher Jr. has been abused by his father and had a knot on his head as a result of being pushed down.

It seems there is a lot of “there was no proof”, but what there is proof of is a freakin RV as home, with no running water and/or electricity.  It seems to me that would be enough, I dunno, I’m not a trained professional.

Both of these winners were arrested on February 11th, they both face three felony counts of child neglect and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia.  They both have bail set at $30,500.

These two fuckwads collected about $20,000 from sympathetic donors before the allegations of drug use surfaced.  That makes me sick!

4-year-old dies with blood alcohol level at .272

Girl died of extreme alochol poisoning

Father and Aunt held in death of 4-year-old

Who doesn’t like a drink or two occasionally?  How many of us remember the first time we drank and actually got drunk and sicker than shit? I remember the drinking part fortunately, I can not remember the getting sicker than shit part, but as I recall… I was a teenager NOT, 4-years-old. That was not the case for little Shakira Decelien.

Alpharetta, Ga Police responded to a call of an unresponsive child just after midnight on January 28th. Her aunt Mara Decelien, was waiting and told them that Shakira may have gotten into some rum and wouldn’t wake up. She neglected to mention that she had waited 3 hours before she called them regarding the little girls condition. BTW… rum does not taste good, in my opinion, I find it hard to believe a 4-year-old would continue to drink it after the first taste.

Shakira was transported to a local hospital where she later died of “extreme alcohol toxicity”; she had a blood alcohol level of .272, more than three times the legal limit for an adult driver.

Court documents accused Shakira’s father Wilguens Decelien and her aunt Mara Decelien of feeding the little girl alcohol in the hours before she died.  Of course they deny all of the charges; as if we thought for one second they would admit to it.

According to police they found several liquor bottles and trash strewn throughout the home, as well as five other children. The children have since been removed from them home and placed in state custody.

Both the father and aunt face charges of murder and felony child cruelty.

 R.I.P. Shakira

Drunk Ind. Breeder leaves kid in cold car naked

Brittany Hazelwood

Court: Drunk mom leaves nude kid in cold car:

Mom Arrested After Children Found In Freezing Car:

Police in Fishers, Indiana arrested 24-year-old Brittany Hazelwood for allegedly leaving her two children in the car, one of them naked, while it was 36 degrees outside. Police say that Hazlewood was drunk off her ass and almost passed out inside the house. The kids were said to have been in the car outside the house for 40 minutes. Hazlewood’s BAC was said to be .19.

The other Breeder of the pair came home while police were at the house and guess what. He was drunk too with a mighty .21 BAC. That’s almost 3 times the legal limit.

And to top it all off police say that the home was filthy with trash and open food.

Now as far as I can tell Hazlewood was not charged with DUI however if the kids were in the car in the driveway and she was inside passed out I’m going to assume that the kids didn’t drive themselves there which means that Hazlewood earned herself the #7 spot on the BB BAC Board.

And yet again we have a story where two Breeders are more concerned with getting their drink on then cleaning the house or caring for their children.

I wonder if the Breeders went to the same bar for both of them to get drunk and did they take the kids in the bar with them.

Did online games lead to animal feces?

Police: Online Gaming Addict Neglected Her 6 Children:

Police in Uniontown, Pennsylvania will be filing child endangerment charges against Elizabeth Ruffner after finding her six kids living in filth and everybody’s favorite, animal feces. The excuse being given is that Ruffner was addicted to online games.

Police say there was no food in the house and that the kids’ mattresses look like they had been pulled from the junkyard. Their stepfather says that he tried to take care of the kids by bathing then and trying to clean up after them but since he worked it was hard to keep up with them.

Police say that the house looked like it had not been cleaned in years so I don’t think the problem was online gaming. I think the problem is that this bitch was lazy as fuck and just used the games as a crutch.

We are all responsible for our own actions no matter what our addictions may be. There is no excuse for allowing your kids to live among piles of animal crap. If you’re home all day playing games on the computer you have plenty of damn time to clean up the shit on the floor.

This also shows what kind of priorities were going on here as well. No food in the house but the internet bill was paid.

The kids have been removed from the home.

Drugs and Filth in West Virginia – Not a repeat

Scotty Lee Davis and Dollie Marie Cooper

Children found amid drugs, filth in Danville, police say:

Some people think I have some kind of vendetta against West Virginia. I don’t really. I tend to kid that it’s a trailer trash kind of state. It’s turned into sort of a running joke on the site. The following story has so many other running jokes in it you would think I was making it all up. I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

Scotty Lee Davis, 31, and Dollie Marie Cooper, 26, both of Danville, West Virginia were living in a trailer with their three kids. The police went there to conduct a welfare check. The cop noticed that Davis had a narcotic residue in his nose. Davis allegedly admitted to police that he and his baby mama Cooper were snorting pills earlier in the evening. Police and CPS also supposedly found some weed spread out on the table in reach of the children. The domicile also had not had running water for two weeks.

So let’s go down the list. They live in a dirty trailer in West Virginia with no water while snorting Oxycontin (more than likely) and smoking weed with kids in the ‘house’ and he has the middle name of Lee. If there was a pitbull in the story I probably would have peed myself.

Luckily the kids were relatively unharmed.

Meth smoking Breeders put baby in freezer

Chandler father accused of placing baby son in freezer:

Police: Chandler Man Puts Baby In Freezer:

Police in Chandler, Arizona arrested Leann and Chance Cracke, nice name, for injuring their 7-month-old son. It seems that Mr. Methe…I mean Cracke was tweaking on meth and was hungry and didn’t want to put the baby on the dirty floor. We’ll get to the floor in a second. So instead of putting the baby down he put him on the bottom shelf of the freezer. I’m guessing that whenever he found some food to put in his meth riddled body he forgot about the baby and closed the freezer door. After a few minutes the Breeders heard the baby crying and got him out. The boy was said to have a bump and a cut from the freezer door. Police were called by the boy’s maternal grandmother.

Now back to the floor. The reason the floor was dirty was because it was covered in c*ckroaches, urine and the pre-requisite feces. No word yet if the feces was dog or human. There was also a rusty razor blade just laying around along with several open containers of tobacco spit.

The Breeders’ 19-month-old daughter was also removed from the house because of burns and bruises found on her.

The Crackes allegedly admitted to smoking meth every day for a month and a half.

I still can’t comprehend why scum that have children would inject this toxic substance into their bodies. You would think with two young children they already weren’t getting enough sleep.

Thanks to Susan for the tip.
