42-year-old Jonathan Outlaw was a former police officer at Tennessee State University. Recently, he was shot and killed at a gas station in Robertson County, Tennessee. He was there to meet someone from craigslist who was interested in buying his car, instead three suspects tried to steal the car from Outlaw. One of the suspects allegedly shot Outlaw as they fled with his car.
Police have arrested two suspects. One is a juvenile and the other is 19-year-old Ricardo Lamont Murray Jr. The third suspect has yet to be identified.
The Craigslist Killing blog has 119 craigslist murders listed on their site, but doesn’t have the murder of Mr. Outlaw listed yet. That would make 120 murders with a craigslist connection. No matter who you are, no matter what your background or profession, you can become a victim of one of these crimes. Even worse, there’s been so many of these killings you could be just a statistic.
Norfolk police responded to the ad posing as someone who had access to a 12-year-old child. Police say that May asked them to download the app Wickr, an anonymous messaging app. I’ll be getting into more detail about Wickr here. May reportedly said that he would pay $150 to ‘have sex’ with the 12-year-old. A meeting was set and May was arrested at the meeting with $160, lube and condoms.
How bad is it on craigslist when the predators are just openly asking for children in their preferred age range? Better yet, why is craigslist still allowing these ads to be placed on their website? Lastly, why are people still using craigslist when it harbors potential and actual child molesters within its platform?
Back in April, 16-year-old Jamaa Khalik Scott of Richmond, Virginia, was shot and killed after meeting someone through classifieds app LetGo. Scott was planning on stealing the phone being sold by grabbing it and running. Instead he was shot and killed by the seller who drove off.
Late in August, 20-year-old Roger Craig Brown III, of Chesterfield County, was arrested and charged with Scott’s murder. Now, a second arrest has been made. 20-year-old James McLaughlin III, of Chesterfield, has also been charged in connection with Scott’s murder.
Police are still being quiet about how the suspects are connected to the murder and which man allegedly pulled the trigger.
As I said before, it’s one thing to defend yourself during a robbery, it’s another to shoot a 16-year-old boy over a cell phone then flee the scene.
On June 24, the investigator stumbled upon an ad titled “Virgin? Would you like to lose it (M4W)” and “Hello HS and Virgin Girls.”
“Servicing any inexperienced girl willing to loose (sic) it, any age,” the ad read. “You can have me climb through your window at night or I can host. I’m very experienced and skilled. Girl party friendly too. Great for your slumber party with your girlfriends. Please send pictures with your reply. Ciao!”
Police responded to the ad posing as a 13-year-old girl and arrested Zagalo at a predetermined meeting place. Zagalo reportedly thanked police when they arrested him stating they saved him.
This is craigslist at its lowest. Craigslist does moderate their ads for certain things but only when it benefits them. However when it comes to checking their ads for potential child molesters, they couldn’t care less. If craigslist can moderate their ads for any reason, then they can moderate their ads for scumbags like this, except they probably don’t want to lose the traffic the personals and casual encounters sections bring them.
28-year-old Kevin Gowsell of Middletown, Ohio, was arrested in Eau Claire, Wisconsin for allegedly soliciting sex from police posing as a minor. Goswell, allegedly posted a craigslist ad stating he would be passing through town and had a room and hot tub to share.
At the time of his arrest in Eau Claire, Goswell is said to have taken a page out of the ‘To Catch a Predator’ playbook…
Goswell said he was concerned about the child’s welfare and wanted to meet her for supper to tell her it was not safe to meet strangers online.
Bemidji, Minnesota, is home to part of three separate Chippewa reservations, which probably explains why someone posted a craigslist ad there, looking for a ‘young native’. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension noticed an ad that was allegedly posted by 20-year-old Lukas Devlen Fineday of Ponsford, Minnesota, looking for “any type of woman that’s down for anything.”
The BCA responded to the ad posing as a 15-year-old girl from Bemidji. Fineday allegedly still wanted to meet the girl for sex and a meeting was arranged at a local motel in Bemidji. He was arrested in Bemidji at a local WalMart where investigators found him before the meeting.
In case you’re wondering, the age of consent in Minnesota is 16, and even under the poorly named Romeo and Juliet laws a minor under the age of 16 can’t consent to sex with anyone more than 48 months older than they are. I guess 15 really does get you 20.
54-year-old Nick Deelstra, of Logan, Utah, has been arrested for allegedly soliciting a child for sex on craigslist. The way he was caught may be the first time I’ve ever heard of something like this.
Deelstra is said to have called the FBI, claiming to be the victim of a craigslist scam. What scam is that you ask? He reportedly told the FBI he was being blackmailed by a man claiming to be the father of a 16-year-old boy. The ‘father’ wanted money from Deelstra because the ‘boy’ had wrecked the car on his way to see Deelstra. Why was the boy on his way to see Deelstra? Why to have sex with him of course, allegedly.
In a Sept. 8 interview with police, Deelstra reportedly admitted to knowing the boy was 16, but still agreed to meet with him for sex acts. He was arrested by Logan police.
Did he think he would somehow not get arrested? While in other situations it’s always better to go to police about a blackmailer, I wonder how successful the blackmailers are when they’re extorting child predators.
No word on if the blackmailers are being investigated.
Once again, I doubt this was his first craigslist rodeo, meaning craigslist is a playground for pedophiles, and the website refuses to do anything about it.
UPDATE 11/21/2017: After pleading guilty in October to one count of third-degree felony attempted sexual sexual exploitation of a minor, Deelstra was sentenced to time served along with 60 hours of community service and three years probation.
Before I begin, isn’t that the mugshot of a man who knows he’s been busted? But, I digress.
59-year-old Karl Waggoner, of Apache Junction, Arizona, was a Principal at an elementary school in Pinal County. He may have since been relieved of his position because of what he allegedly posted on Craigslist. Waggoner is accused of posting several ads on craigslist leading up to the Labor Day weekend asking for teenage girls to go skinny dipping with him at his home.
This ad caught the eye of the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office who responded to the ad posing as a 14-year-old girl. According to the PCSO the conversation quickly turned sexual. At his arrest, Waggoner reportedly admitting to placing the ads.
The school board did do a background search on Waggoner going back 15 years and found nothing. That could mean he just hasn’t been caught until now. Police are currently looking for possible victims.
This is another case of craigslist allowing ads which solicit children for sex on their website. Don’t tell me they can’t moderate their site because they do. Usually it’s only for ads they feel can hurt their business directly, otherwise it’s still anything goes on craigslist.
I originally posted about former Oklahoma State Senator Ralph Shortey here. Back in March, he was caught in a motel with a 17-year-old boy he met through craigslist, who Shortey was allegedly paying for sex. When asked about the situation, Shortey reportedly said “he was just there to hang out with his friend.”
However, Shortey was released on a mere $5,000 bond. Why? If he was any other Joe Pedophile off the streets he’d probably be held on bond of at least $100,000 or more. I guess even disgraced state Senators still hold some sway even if they’re allegedly a sexual predator.
UPDATE 11/30/2017:Shortey has pleaded guilty to child sex trafficking. He is scheduled to be sentenced net year. He’s looking at 10 years in federal prison.
Back in May, Mr. Cruz went missing after going to sell his truck on craigslist and never returned, His truck was found abandoned and his blood was inside the truck. His body was found behind a vacant Atlanta home.
Just how Mr. Cruz was murdered and which of the men allegedly killed him has not yet been made public.
