I never thought I would be posting a story about MySpace in 2017, yet here we are.
Anyway, 32-year-old David Francisco Pena, was recently arrested in Gulfport, Mississippi, after being on the run for three years. Pena was convicted of first-degree sexual assault of a Juvenile in 2009, after he took a girl he met on MySpace from Nebraska to his home in Texas. Pena spent some time in prison and was paroled in 2010 then was ordered to register as a sex offender. Police were looking for Pena for the past three years after he allegedly fled supervision in 2014.
As I’ve said before, the only thing the sex offender registry does well is to let you know where registered sex offenders live in your area. It does nothing to dissuade all the unregistered ones from committing crimes.
I’ve inadvertently posted about Clifford W. Wares of Warwick, New York, before. The first was in 2009 when he was arrested for allegedly sending obscene material to an underage girl on MySpace. The second time was in 2013 when he was arrested in a ‘primitive encampment’ in New York where he was allegedly using Facebook to extort underage girls into having sex with him. As I have mentioned in the past, in this and many other instances the term ‘having sex’ should actually be called child rape, but I digress. When I posted the second story I was unaware that I had posted about Wares before.
Ware was recently in the news again when he was sentenced in federal court to life behind bars for, as NJ.com puts it, six counts including interstate travel to engage in illicit sexual conduct, production of child pornography, online enticement of a minor to engage in criminal sexual activity and making interstate extortionate threats.
While the fact that a scumbag like Ware was sentenced to life should be newsworthy, that’s not exactly why he grabbed headlines. After one of his victims gave her impact statement Ware actually spat blood at her. This was a girl who was 13 when Ware threatened her when she refused to engage in bestiality for him. It didn’t end there either…
When court resumed, Wares observed the proceedings via closed-circuit camera in a holding cell, wearing a clear mask. Even under those circumstances, Wares was defiant, promising vengeance.
“It’s not hard to get out, and when I do, oh, there’s going to be problems,” he said.
Wares also pointed a middle finger at the camera after he completed his statement.
I feel so bad for his victim having to deal with this psychopath again like that but I admire her courage for being able to stand up to that monster so he could be put away forever.
Unfortunately, I doubt that this will be the last we hear from Wares. I don’t think he’ll ever see daylight again but I can imagine the appeals process that he’ll use to his advantage to further threaten and terrify.
You can see my first post on Veron Primus here. He’s been the main person of interest in the 2006 murder of 16-year-old Chanel Petro-Nixon. Primus had recently been arrested on murder and kidnapping charges in the island country of St. Vincent. Investigators in Brooklyn say thanks to that arrest they were able to obtain evidence that allegedly connects Primus to Chanel’s murder. Authorities in Brooklyn are not saying at this time what the evidence is but that they are looking for even more evidence.
Chanel Petro-Nixon was 16 in 2006 when she was strangled to death in Brooklyn, but to date no one has been charged with her murder. As recently as 2014 the NYPD said that they had a person of interest in her murder but could not physically connect him to the crime.
The story took a strange turn recently as the person of interest, 29-year-old Veron Primus, has been arrested on the Caribbean island of Saint Vincent for allegedly stabbing another woman to death. Primus is accused of murdering 24-year-old real estate agent Sharleen Greaves last year. Primus was a classmate of Chanel’s back in 2006 and was the last person believed to be with her before she disappeared. Primus was being questioned about the alleged kidnapping of another St. Vincent woman when, from what I understand, found evidence implicating him in the murder of Ms. Graves and possibly one other woman.
I hope for the sake of Chanel’s family that this somehow will finally allow New York police bring justice for Chanel.
I’ll post more on Primus and his more recent alleged crimes as information becomes available and time allows.
31-year-old Lucas Michael Chansler, formerly of St. John’s, Florida, is spending 105 years in prison on child porn charges after pleading guilty in 2014. Chanlser would pose as a 15-year-old on MySpace, Stickam, and AIM to solicit underage girls for explicit pictures. Once he started getting pictures from the victim he would extort them into giving him more by threatening to post them online or send them to the victim’s friend. All told, federal investigators say that Chansler had 350 victims. So far only 109 of his victims have been identified and the FBI is still searching for the other 241 victims. The feds also say that pictures of 49 of his victims are still being traded among pedophiles today. This article has a list of many of the usernames he used on the various platforms.
For those of you who may not remember, Stickam was a video chat site that was constantly embroiled in controversy. The website shut down for good in early 2013.
Additional details about this story and tips on how to avoid this kind of extortion can be found at the FBI website.
I received the following e-mail last night. I bring it to you in its unedited form…
FUCK YOUR SITE, FUCK YOUR FREEDOM OF THE PRESS, BECAUSE YOUR FREEDOM OF THE PRESS WILL SOON BE CONSIDERED A HATE CRIME AND YOU WILL BE FORCED TO REMOVE YOUR WEBSITE AND FACE CIVIL AND CRIMINAL CHARGES FOR IT. FUCK YOU AND YOUR BIAS BULLSHIT. ROT IN HELL YOU PIECE OF WORTHLESS STUCK AT HOME FAT ASS
As Connor said in Boondock Saints “Well, that certainly illustrates the diversity of the word.” Not to mention…
This e-mail is from someone I posted about many years ago who may or may not have touched an underage girl they met on MySpace. That’s how old the post is.
If I would have been asked nicely I would have had no problem removing the post since they served their time. I still might if asked nicely. However let’s clear some things up. As I keep saying I’m not a journalist so this is freedom of speech not freedom of press and the only time my freedom of speech may be considered a hate crime is if registered sex offenders become a protected class.
Lastly and most importantly it ain’t my fault you got arrested. So how about you man up and show some responsibility?
There’s only been one winner in the case of 12-year-old Brooke Bennett and her killer and uncle Michael Jacques. It’s definitely not Brooke after being kidnapped, raped and killed by Jacques, a sex offender who was released early after completing a ‘program’. It’s not Jacques either as he’s going to do a life sentence in federal prison. No, the only winner here is Jacques’ anti-death penalty defense attorney David Ruhnke.
Runhke not only held up the trial for years with his anti-death penalty arguments but he got the federal prosecutors and Jacques to agree to a life sentence plea. Now he’s even topped himself by getting a federal judge to agree to send Jacques to a prison in Tucson, Arizona, that has a prison population of 65% sex offenders. Your tax dollars at work. The point being that in any other prison Jacques would be a target by other non-child rapist prisoners.
Once again the rights of the criminal have become more important than the rights of the victim, or justice for that matter.
It’s been six long years since Michael Jacques brutally raped and murdered his 12-year-old niece, Brooke Bennett. While it hasn’t come to the conclusion I would have hoped it has finally come to a conclusion. After being called a coward by Brooke’s mother when she gave her impact statement to the court Jacques was sentenced to life in prison plus 70 years with no possibility of parole. While Vermont has no death penalty Jacques was looking at a federal death penalty since he used MySpace and the internet to lure Brooke to her death. Last August Jacques pleaded guilty in a move which saw him spared the death penalty.
In a statement at his sentencing Jacques said he was sorry and ashamed. Probably only sorry and ashamed that he got caught.
Jacques was also a registered sex offender who was released early for completing a ‘program’.
The most prolific sex offender in the MySpace era, in my opinion, is back in the news again. Scott Shefelbine was arrested over a dozen times for charges relating to MySpace and underage girls. I think you can connect the dots. Each time his parents would pst his bail including putting up their home and business. Eventually a judge got smart to Shefelbine’s habit and revoked his bond.
Back in 2008 Shelfelbine entered a guilty plea and was sentenced to 20 years back in 2008. Since that time he’s been trying to have his guilty plea withdrawn. He had an appeal for new trial rejected once before in 2012. 2014 was no different as Shefelbine had his appeal new trial rejected once more.
Considering this is a guy who would search for new victims even after he was arrested he should consider himself lucky that he got a 20 year plea deal. Come on Scoot, you only have 14 years left. Stick it out like trooper won’t you?
Back in the day I was hoping he would have gone to trial because he was looking at a life sentence.
It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost 8 years since the murder of 16-year-old Chanel Petro-Nixon of Brooklyn. In June of 2006 Chanel’s body was found in a garbage bag after having been strangled to death. At that time of her death police were looking into Chanel’s MySpace account for any possible clues. Since that time no one has been arrested for her murder.
The article I linked to does mention something that I had not had heard about until now. Police do have a person of interest in Chanel’s murder. On the day of Chanel’s disappearance she was supposed to meet a boy. When questioned the boy said that Chanel stood her up. That boy is now in prison for violating a restraining order taken out by a former girlfriend. He was also charged twice with rape but was acquitted both times. To me that sounds a lot like where there’s smoke there’s fire but police have not been able to physically connect him to the crime. That’s why police say they need the public’s help.
The Mayor’s office, NYPD, and Crime Stoppers have joined forces to offer a $22,000 reward to anyone with information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case. The number to dial with a tip is 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls are treated confidentially.
“There are people that have information,” Detective Scandole told PIX 11. “And they may believe that information is not important and it may seem inconsequential. But to us, it could be the one thing that ties it together. It’s like we’re putting together a jigsaw puzzle and we’re missing that one piece.”
I pray that the Nixon family will find justice and peace very soon.
