A Connecticut judge has ruled that documents seized in the Sandy Hook investigation that belonged to Adam Lanza will remain secret. The judge cited that if Lanza had survived and was tried for his crimes, the court would have ordered the private property returned to its rightful owner.
While it wasn’t mentioned in any article I saw, it could be safe to assume that another reason the documents were ordered to remain private were to prevent copycat shootings. Personally, I’m of the opinion that releasing these documents won’t cause copycats to increase. Conversely, with the release of such documents I believe it can go a long way in helping to identify future threats.
I can’t believe we keep having to go over this. Then again it’s hard to wage a war on ignorance when the ignorant want to stay that way.
For those of you who may not know Asperger’s Syndrome is a form of Autism where the sufferer has trouble with social situations and has trouble discerning different types of speech like sarcasm. That’s just a very basic explanation of it. What Asperger’s doesn’t do is turn someone into a homicidal maniac.
Yes there have been violent killers who have suffered from Asperger’s. The one’s that come to mind for me are William Freund, John Odgren, and of course Adam Lanza.
Another thing that Asperger’s doesn’t do is that it doesn’t diminish your ability to tell right from wrong. While Asperger’s may be seen as a mental disease Lanza and the others knew full well what they were doing and what they were doing was wrong. Newtown was not just some outburst. Lanza had planned it for months as did Freund and Odgren. The only drawback in these cases with Asperger’s, if you can call it a drawback, is that Apserger’s patients tend to be highly intelligent and organized hence the ‘success’ of these attacks. However these attacks are the exception and not the rule.
The problem is that too many people in our society believe correlation is causation. They believe that since these killers had Asperger’s that everyone that has Asperger’s is a potential mass murderer. It also doesn’t help that too many criminal defense lawyers are using Asperger’s as a defense in murder trials, as shown with that of John Odgren. Then lastly there’s the people who have self-diagnosed themselves as having Asperger’s. Asperger’s cannot just be diagnosed by going to WebMD. It has to be diagnosed by a medical professional. If you tell people you have Asperger’s and you’ve never seen a doctor about it chances are you’re just an anti-social jerk.
Stop living in fear of everything. Knowledge is power and the more knowledge you have the better off we’ll all be.
Two stories came out this past week about the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. One the media took and ran with while the other has received little to no attention. As usual it’s my opinion that the media picked the wrong one.
“His attack can be seen entirely parallel to the attacks and random acts of violence that you bring up on your show every week, committed by humans, which the mainstream also has no explanation,” Lanza says of Travis at one point.
“I just … don’t think it would be such a stretch to say that he very well could have been a teenage mall shooter or something like that.”
I don’t see how this is relevant to explaining the motive behind the shooting itself. This is National Enquirer stuff which doesn’t surprise me since the first national news outlet to break the story was the New York Daily News.
Now the story that got no attention whatsoever was this story where Matthew Lerner, a psychology professor at Stony Brook University, told the commission investigating Sandy Hook that there is no link between Autism and violence.
This is the story that should have gotten the press that the chimp story did. Asperger’s has become the 2nd de facto excuse for school violence after bullying. It’s yet to be used as a successful defense. Yet there are people who will think that because of people like Lanza that all Asperger’s patients or Autistics are all potential mass murderers.
We have too much ignorance in this country as it is and it’s partly because the media is more concerned about ratings and page views than educating the populace or reporting the truth.
That’s a young Adam Lanza dressed in camos, teething on what appears to be a gun in front of a gun rack. First off the gun he’s holding is probably a toy and this picture could be of any number of kids who were and are raised in rural America. That doesn’t make them potential mass killers. As a matter of fact, kids who are raised around guns are usually less likely to become killers since they’re taught to respect firearms and are well-educated on the damage they can do. I’m not here to argue the merits or drawbacks of the 2nd Amendment but guns did not make Adam Lanza a mass murderer.
Another thing the media is making a big deal about is the fact that a psychiatrist who once treated Lanza voluntarily gave up his license because he allegedly had a sexual relationship with one of his patients. He briefly treated Lanza and barely remembered him. The doctor surrendered his license in 2012. This didn’t cause Lanza to become a mass murderer either.
Again Lanza became a mass murderer because he was allowed to have an unhealthy obsession about previous school shootings and was allowed easy access to weapons by his mother. People with Asperger’s can tend to have obsessions over one particular subject, Adam Lanza’s were mass killings and no one discouraged him from it. Another case of Not My Kid Syndrome.
Another story that I’ve been woefully behind on is that of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School last year. Back in late November the state of Connecticut released their final report. You can read a PDF of the report here.
What a lot of media outlets have been focusing on is that Adam Lanza was obsessed with Columbine. I was about to dismiss this as media hyperbole again especially considering that Lanza had a not only a spreadsheet that detailed numerous mass murders but he also had newspaper clippings and documentation on the shootings at NIU and Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania. That was until I read the report.
On page 27 of the report it states that among the evidence that was seized from Lanza’s room were ‘large amount of materials relating to Columbine shootings.’ So Lanza was just another copycat mutant, an anti-social loser with no originality. And just like his coward heroes the only way he could make himself feel relevant was through the barrel of a gun. Also just like his coward heroes he took the coward’s way out making the flames of hell burn just a little more yellow.
Also listed in the evidence seized were ‘materials regarding the topic of pedophilia and advocating for rights for pedophiles.’ So not only was he a mutant but he was pedo-defending scum too.
Yep, someone actually made a video game about the killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School. While most people are outraged my first thought was “What took them so long?” although not in a good way.
First off let’s discuss the term ‘video game’ in this situation. This is not a game you can go to the store and buy. It was not developed by Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo or any one of their many licensed developers. This game was made by a single idiot in Flash, possibly in a parent’s basement, then posted on the internet for everyone to see.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way I actually played the game. It starts off in Historic Mode where you simplistically reenact the actions of Adam Lanza on that December day. The object is to go from room to room shooting as many teachers and students as possible after shooting your mother in the head. You have 10 minutes to kill as many as possible and once time runs out the game says the police have arrived and your character commits suicide. Once you finished Historic Mode it unlocks Gun Control mode. In this scenario you’re using a katana instead of a gun. When that mode is completed it unlocks a third mode where the teachers are armed. In case you were wondering I scored the highest on the armed teacher level.
When you complete the game you can hear a recorded message from the game’s creator stating that the game was made since after living in Texas the designer lived in Australia where they have tight gun control and believes the US should follow suit. In a nutshell he claims this game was made in support of gun control, but I call bullshit.
The game was made by one Ryan Lanbourn. If the name sounds familiar he made a similar game in 2007 called V-Tech Rampage about the Virginia Tech shootings. Was he arguing for gun control back then? Not really. He was extorting the internet instead.
I will take this game down from newgrounds if the donation amount reaches $1000 US, i’ll take it down from here if it reaches $2000 US, and i will apologize if it reaches $3000 US.
The newgrounds he speaks of is Newgrounds.com which hosts all sorts of tasteless games but surprisingly they have taken the Sandy Hook game down.
Now here’s why you shouldn’t be outraged. First of Lambourn is nothing but a troll and lives off of your outrage and as you should know by now you never feed the troll. Secondly in this day and age of the internet some jackass is going to post something that’s offensive after every tragedy that happens. If we’re outraged every time they do this they’ll just continue with every tragedy that happens. That’s why I was surprised it took this long for the game to become public knowledge. It took less than a month for Lambourn’s Virginia Tech game to come out.
So in conclusion stop being a bunch of knee jerkers and pearl twisters every time some assclown does something offensive. You’re only guaranteeing they’ll do it again.
Elad Nehorai is a blogger and writer who wrote a series of posts comparing Sandy Hook to Columbine. One of his points of contentions I respectfully disagree with is that the parents should not be held responsible for the massacres. In his opinion this makes the school shooters out to be victims. In my opinion the parents should be held partially responsible for these tragedies as they could have easily prevented them but the one thing we do agree upon is that school shooters, especially Adam Lanza and Eric Harris, are never victims.
I urge you to read both of his posts, the first one is linked in the article I linked to. I can’t do his work any justice being the hack that I am but please allow me to leave you with some of his words about Eric Harris and the persistent myth that he and Dylan Klebold were bullied….
Eric and Dylan weren’t outcasts, and they were hardly ever bullied. In fact, if anything, Eric was a bully himself. They weren’t goth, they weren’t gay and they weren’t outcasts.
Eric Harris was never quietly suffering. In fact, from a young age, Eric was exhibiting signs of being a born killer.
In fact, one of the most pervasive myths about Columbine was that it was a school shooting. It wasn’t. It was a failed bombing. Eric and Dylan had planted bombs throughout the school. There plan was to massacre as many of the students and faculty as possible, with no specific group in mind.
In other words, there were no targets.
Eric’s dream wasn’t to kill jocks or anyone else. His goal in life was to make as many people suffer as possible, as painfully as possible.
Yet still people cling on this myth like it was the last life-preserver on The Titanic, like it was the only thing giving them purpose. Let it go. Not only is it not true but the more you hang on to your high school hate the more you let the bullies win. It’s time to grow up now.
Last week it was leaked by an anonymous official attached to the Sandy Hook investigation that Adam Lanza’s toxicology report did not turn up any illegal or prescription drugs in his system. As I’ve posted before usually charlatans and quacks come out after a school shooting and are quick to blame anti-depressants as the real motive behind these kinds of shootings. Dealing with them is kind of like dealing with conspiracy theorists. If the suspect was on anti-depressants the shooting was caused by the meds. If the shooter wasn’t on any meds then the shooting must have happened because he went off his meds. Why can’t it just ever be that he was a crazy bastard?
It’s no secret that I am a firm advocate of medical science and anti-depressants. As I’ve said numerous times an anti-depressant basically turned my life around. Have I had a bad reaction to some? Yes, I have. Unfortunately finding the right one can be a trial and error kind of process. However when I did have a bad reaction the only person I wanted to hurt was myself. If, and that’s a mighty big if, a prescription medication causes someone to murder it’s more than likely that person had murderous intentions to begin with.
As far as I’m concerned the people who blame these things on anti-depressants are on the same level of people who believe vaccines cause autism. Both are misinformed and are wallowing in their ignorance.
UPDATE 10/29/2013: These findings have been made official but just like I mentioned the media is blaming the lack of meds in his system as a reason behind the shootings.
But did the troubled 20-year-old slip into a murderous rage because he was off his prescription medication?
How about no? Does no work for you? Because the answer is no. Just, no.
It’s more likely that he want into a murderous rage because he was an over-entitled psychopath.
The search warrants for the school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut were made public on Thursday. You can read the article for the entire list of what they found at the home of Adam Lanza. I’m just going to over a few of the things that caught my attention.
The amount of weaponry that was found leads me to believe that Nancy Lanza may have just been spoiling her son with his obsession. I’ve posted about something similar in the stabbing of James Alenson by John Odgren in the Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High stabbing. Odgren was allowed to keep a vast knife collection and stabbed a random target to death in his high school bathroom. The similarities continue between Odgren and Lanza as books on Autism and Asperger’s were found in the Lanza household. As I have mentioned several times in the past people like Odgren and Lanza are not indicative of all Asperger’s patients. They’re not all potential killers waiting to explode and to use Asperger’s as an excuse or defense for murder is just a way of spreading F.U.D.
Here I’m going to show my true ignorance about firearms. The reports say that Lanza was in possession of 10 magazines that held 30 rounds each for the Bushmaster he used in the killings. I have to ask is there any civilian reason for having that many magazines? Are they interchangeable with other firearms? Again, this leads me to believe that Lanza was just a spoiled brat.
There are conflicting reports about whether Lanza was bullied or not while in school. Now before you start the pity party for Lanza let’s remember that he was 20-years-old when he committed mass murder and had been out of school since 10th grade. If you’re holding on to a bullying grudge for that long not only are you in desperate need of mental help but you’re letting your bullies win by letting them live in your head rent free.
Also found at the Lanza home was a crime scene photo of a victim that was covered in blood and draped in plastic and a newspaper clipping about the shooting at Northern Illinois University. Between the NIU clipping, the spreadsheet and the documentation the Nickel Mines shooting I’m starting to lean towards Lanza being nothing more than a copycat killer. I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out that Lanza was a card-carrying mutant. For those of you new to the site that’s the term I sue for people who are admirers of school shooters, especially the Columbine cowards.
And once again the spectre of video games, especially Call of Duty, has been brought up. Video games did not cause Adam Lanza or anybody else to kill. Call of Duty is one of the most popular games in modern-day video game history and there have not been a rash of killings because of this or any other game. They are not ‘murder-simulators’ as some people like to call them. They don’t teach you how to shoot or how to handle a gun unless your gun is controlled by an Xbox controller.
There is only one thing responsible for the senseless death and tragedy at Newtown and that was Adam Lanza and nothing else. While we may never know his actual motive it’s pointless trying to blame guns or video games or other inanimate objects. Evil is created in the mind not through a lifeless hunk of metal or plastic.
According to reports Lanza had a spreadsheet that was 7 feet by 4 feet that included the names of at least 500 mass murderers. The list was so detailed with body counts and weapon types that some investigators and criminal experts are saying that Lanza’s research mirrored that of a doctoral thesis. This more than dispels my hypothesis that Lanza snapped after his mother, Nancy Lanza, tried to get him to live a more social lifestyle.
I tried to find at least a partial list of the names on the spreadsheet but so far the only ones mentioned in the media were those of Breivik himself and Charles Carl Roberts IV. Roberts was the one who stormed the Amish school in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania where he made the male students leave the school before shooting at least a dozen girls killing five.
What really burns my ass about this story is that too many people who I thought would know better keep referring to Lanza’s spreadsheet as a score card and comparing it to the video games that Lanza liked to play. Lanza’s actions were that of a demented coward and not that of your typical gamer. The first person shooters that Lanza liked to play are rated M meaning that they are not intended for children under 17. Lanza was 20. Are lawmakers going to try to regulate R-Rated movies? I would say violent movies are more of an influence for violent crimes than video games not to mention that art imitates life not the other way around. If kids are getting their hands on these violent video games then it’s the fault of the parents and not the video game makers. I’m a first generation gamer. I got my fist gaming console in the late 1970s and have been playing games ever since. I’ve played first person shooters and violent survival horror games and the last time I checked I haven’t killed anybody nor had the desire to. MOst gamers who play these games couldn’t work an actual gun if their Cheeto stained lives depended on it. Let’s not forget that Nancy Lanza was the one who owned the guns used in the massacre and she often took her son to the shooting range. Whether the video games sparked Lanza’s interest in the guns is of no consequence.
14 years ago people said the same thing about the game Doom and the Columbine shooters. That assertion turned out to be wrong and this one is too.
I am far from trying to defend Adam Lanza. He is just another coward in an all too long line of cowards who thought he would be a big man by shooting defenseless children. Personally I hope that he is rotting in hell. However it was not video games that drove him to kill. Lanza was just a copycat trying to make a name for himself.
