Teen who pleaded guilty in Fla. gang rape of mother and son says 30-year sentence isn’t fair:
If you’ve never heard of the Dunbar Village case it’s one of the worst stories I’ve ever posted if not the worst.
Back in 2007 a group of teens pulled a home invasion of a mother and her son in the Dunbar Village housing project in West Palm Beach, Florida. Not satisfied with just robbing them the group not only gang raped the mother but forced her son to have sex with her. Then they threw cleaning products on them in order to try to get rid of any DNA evidence.
Four teens were arrested for the atrocities. Three of them got life sentences. A fourth, Avion Lawson, got 30 years. Lawson got 30 years because he rolled on his homies otherwise he probably would have met the same fate.
Now Lawson is saying that his sentence was unfair because he claims he was forced to rape the woman at gunpoint by the group’s leader, Tommy Poindexter.
Tough shit. The gang rape of a mother where six suspects have never been brought to justice is unfair. The emotional scarring that her son will probably have for the rest of his life is unfair.
Now that I think about it 30 years is unfair. It should have been much more. He knew what he was getting into.
Youngest Dunbar Village rape defendant sentenced to 30 years:
Avion Lawson was 14 at the time of the infamous Dunbar Village gang rape. He’s now 17 and was looking at 49 years for his role in the act. However Lawson turned on his cohorts and testified against them which resulted in their life sentences.
He was no angel though. He took place in the gang rape as well and testifying doesn’t absolve him of his responsibility.
Monday he was sentenced to 30 years behind bars. His defense asked that he only serve 10 years. Take a look at that pic and tell me that’s someone who should have only gotten 10 years.
The judge also ruled that he must not be jailed anywhere near his cohorts since he’s basically a snitch.
“The chances of your survival greatly decrease based on that label,” Marx said.
So his 30 years may actually be a life sentence.
Three men sentenced to life in prison in Dunbar rape case:
Tommy Poindexter, Jakaris Taylor and Nathan Walker were all sentenced to life in prison for their parts in the infamous brutal gang rape that took place in the Dunbar Village development in West Palm Beach.
There were the usual courtroom histrionics that should be expected in these cases. There were also family members of the convicted making the usual excuses of how they all had hard childhoods. None of which outweighs the fact that they gang raped a woman and forced her to have sex with her son.
The remaining rapist, Avion Lawson, is set to be sentenced in December.
And let’s not forget there are still several suspects that have yet to be caught.
Taylor guilty on all counts in Dunbar Village rape case:
18-year-old Jakaris Taylor was found guilty yesterday on all 13 counts he was accused of for his role in the Dunbar Village gang rape.
It took the jury five hours to come back with guilty verdicts on all counts. It seems they didn’t buy his simulated sex act defense.
Along with the three other rapists of Tommy Poindexter, Avion Lawson and Nathan Walker, Taylor is also facing multiple life sentences when sentenced in October.
This isn’t the end of the story either. There are still six suspects at large who were never identified or caught.
Maybe now that these four are looking at multiple life sentences they’ll give up the rest of them.
I’m behind schedule again so I’m just going to post the links to the highlights of today’s testimony.
Co-defendant Avion Lawson testified today that Tommy Poindexter was the ringleader behind the home invasion and gang rape. However under cross-examination he admitted that the guns used belong to his cousin and he basically called Poindexter a retard.
Apparently that was the only highlight today.
Tomorrow Lawson is scheduled to testify against Nathan Walker.
Crappy testimony aside I seriously doubt either Poindexter or Walker will go free.
Teen Pleads Guilty In ’07 Dunbar Village Gang Rape:
16-year-old Avion Lawson has pleaded guilty to the infamous gang rape at Dunbar Village in West Palm Beach, Florida. He’s also agreed to testify against the other defendants.
This is no slap on the wrist plea bargain either. Lawson pleaded guilty to sexual battery, burglary, kidnapping, grand theft and promoting sexual performance of a child among other charges. He could be sentenced to 11 life sentences plus 50 years. The least he’s looking at is 49 years behind bars. Sentencing is set for October 13th.
If you think his sentence is harsh for a kid who was 14 when he was arrested remember he’s accused of taking part in a home invasion robbery where the suspects gang raped a mother, forced her to have sex with her own son and then threw cleaning chemicals on her to try to destroy evidence. To me 49 years is a good start.
Judge severs trials of 4 charged in savage Dunbar Village gang rape:
A Florida circuit court judge is splitting up the trials of the 4 suspects from the Dunbar Village gang rape case in West Palm Beach.
If you’ll recall the four suspects are accused of breaking into a woman’s apartment, gang raping her and forcing her to have sex with her own 12-year-old son.
Tommy Poindexter and Nathan Walker will be tried in August with the trial of Avion Lawson and Jakaris Taylor starting in September. However each will have his own 6-member jury. I’ve never heard of that before. If there are any legal experts out there is this not uncommon?
Confession allowed in Dunbar rape case:
Dunbar Village rape case suspects ordered to give fingerprints:
For those of you unfamiliar with this story back in June of 2007 a group of youths broke into the Dunbar Village apartment of a woman and her son in West Palm Beach, Florida. The assailants not only gang raped the woman but they forced her to have sex with her own young son. They then threw cleaning fluids on the woman to try to hide DNA evidence. It still stands as one of, if not the worst, story I’ve ever posted.
Anyway the most recent update is that suspects Avion Lawson, 16, Jakaris Taylor, 17, and Tommy Poindexter, 20, have been ordered to have their finger and palm prints taken and to submit handwriting samples. I can understand the handwriting samples but shouldn’t they have their prints already? If someone in law enforcement wants to answer that question for me please feel free.
Also the confession of Lawson has been ruled admissible. His defense attorney argued that he invoked his right to remain silent prior to confessing but the judge ruled that Lawson did not invoke his right. However parts of a confession given by Taylor were ruled inadmissible with the judge saying that Taylor did invoke his right.
Confessions or not I think the evidence against them is rather overwhelming.
Plea deal off the table for Dunbar rape suspect:
The plea deal for Dunbar Village gang rape suspect Jakaris Taylor has been taken off the table. Taylor previously reached a plea deal that would have put him behind bars for 20 years if he testified against the other suspects, Nathan Walker, Avion Lawson and Tommie Poindexter.
Taylor has refused to answer questions from the attorneys representing the other suspects.
In November of 2007, Taylor and his cohorts allegedly broke into a woman’s apartment in the Dunbar Village apartments and gang raped the woman and forced her to have sex with her 12-year-old son.
Now Taylor will be going to trial with the others. That trial is scheduled to start in May.
Prosecutor seeks to end plea deal for teen accused in Dunbar Village rape:
Back in November of 2007 prosecutors reached a plea agreement with then 16-year-old Jakaris Taylor in the Dunbar Village gang rape case. Taylor received a 20 year sentence in the matter and would have been spared three consecutive life sentences. However that was with the agreement that he would testify against the other suspects.
Now prosecutors want to revoke that deal since Taylor has been uncooperative in the matter and try him along with the other suspects, Nathan Walker, Avion Lawson and Tommie Poindexter.
If you’ll recall the four are accused of gang raping a woman and forcing her to have sex with her 12-year-old son.
Previously Taylor had allegedly told one of his otrher co-defendants that “real niggas don’t take pleas”. That kind of attitude will get you three life sentences. For what these scumbags did I have no problem with that.
