For some reason I’ve become fascinated with what child predators give as an excuse when they’re busted. I guess it stems from the To Catch a Predator series when the alleged offenders all gave almost the same answer. Most of them send they were just there to hang out with their underage target while other s said they were there to teach their target the dangers of meeting strange men on the internet. Not surprisingly police didn’t believe any of them. Especially the ones that showed up with booze and/or sex toys.
Which brings us to the story of 21-year-old Gareth Oliver from Newcastle in the UK. Oliver was grooming some underage boys on Facebook then made the 300 mile trip by bus, of course it was by bus, to Kent where his victims resided. He was trying to get the boys to go camping with him but one of the parents became suspicious. At the time of his arrest Oliver had nine condoms on him. When asked why he made the 300 mile trek Oliver said that he was there to go BMX riding with the boys. That’s the first time I’ve heard that one. It’s a little more specific than just hanging out but still not even remotely believable.
Oliver was sentenced to six years in prison and a lifetime on the registry.
31-year-old Alexsa Mirabal of Roy, Utah has been arrested for having sex with two 16-year-old girls after posing as a boy on MySpace in order to lure them.
Mirabal posed as a teen named Alex on MySpace and according to investigators Mirabal put a lot of work into her phony MySpace to make it look like the Myspace of a teen boy.
Mirabal allegedly would reveal herself to her victims as herself before engaging them into a sexual relationship. She is accused of molesting one of the girls for 2 years. One of her other victims is the daughter of a co-worker. Mirabal was busted when the two girls found out about each other.
You can’t say that this is a case of spurned teen lovers since Mirabal allegedly went to great lengths to groom both of these girls. You would think people like this would realize that they have a problem when they go to such lengths to commit illegal sexual activity.
A mother from Omaha, Neb. was shocked and horrified that an 18-year-old would send such sexual messages to her 11-year-old daughter over MyYearbook.
She shouldn’t be though…
Diving into her computer’s history, she discovers a conversation between her 11-year-old daughter and an 18-year-old man on the social networking website myyearbook.com. When her daughter pretends to be a 15 year old, she says the man makes suggestive requests for a rendezvous.
I wonder where the 11-year-old’s computer is located in the house. And it wasn’t until text messages were discovered that mom even had a clue.
You need to be more vigilant than this. I can’t say it enough times. Kids’ computers need to be kept in common areas and not in their bedrooms. No web cams for kids. And for the love of God please check their online activity on a regular basis.
A predator only needs one instant to start grooming your kids.
