My baby’s in the toilet

Peach County inmate leaves newborn in toilet:

25-year-old Cornelia Kornegay was in a holding cell at the Peach County Law Enforcement Center in Georgia, aka county lockup. Wednesday morning she notified the deputies that “My baby’s in the toilet,” According to deputies she said it ‘matter of factly’. It turns out that Kornegay gave birth in the holding cell to a 7 pound 6 ounce baby girl but left the baby face down in the toilet. Luckily deputies were able to retrieve the baby quickly and she’s doing fine.

Kornegay did not tell deputies she was pregnant and by looking at the mugshot I can see how deputies may not have known. Kornegay was in jail for violating probation on a misdemeanor offense. She claims she hid the pregnancy because she didn’t want her parents to know.

Think about that for a second. If it wasn’t for the fact that she was in jail she might have dumped her baby somewhere and no one may have ever found out about it.

And if you’re 25 why are you hiding your pregnancy from anyone?

Kornegay is now facing felony child abuse charges.

Woman charged with murder for dumping newborn into lake

Woman turns herself in after tossing baby into lake:

Mom to be charged with dumping baby in lake:

20-year-old Ciara Craig of Metairie, Louisiana has been charged with first degree murder for dumping her newborn daughter into Lake Pontchartrain.

As is almost usual in these cases Craig was hiding the pregnancy from her family. Reports say that the baby was the product of a one night stand and that she wanted to get an abortion but was too far along in the pregnancy. She supposed had received counseling on other alternatives but it’s unknown how much she knew about Louisiana’s safe haven laws.

She turned herself into police on her family’s urging. Too little too late if you ask me but I digress.

Here’s where you may want to look away because the rest of the details aren’t pretty. As a matter of fact it’s nstories like this that make want to quit writing about crime.

Craig told police that when she dumped the baby into the lake she could feel the baby’s heartbeat and that it was still breathing. Police received a tip from a neighbor that they noticed something suspicious being thrown in a trashcan. When police investigated they found the placenta.

According to the MSNBC article here’s what the La. safe haven law is…

Under the law, a baby up to 31 days old may be left at any emergency care facility, such as a hospital or police station. The baby cannot be left unattended and must show no signs of abuse or neglect.

First off if it was too late to get an abortion how about giving the baby up for adoption? I get comments from families all the time who say they have room in their life for another child.

Another thing I don’t get is the whole hiding the pregnancy thing. What’s the worst that could happen. Barring any extreme circumstances the most that would happen is that your parents throw you out. That’s a hell of a lot better than a dead baby and spending the rest of your life or being killed in prison.

Lastly in this day and age who doesn’t know about safe haven laws?

As I’m apt to say at one of my other sites as a society humanity doesn’t deserve to exist.

Teen sentenced for dropping baby down trash chute

Teen gets 13 years in Pompano Beach killing of newborn:

Ashley Truitt is the 19-year-old girl from Iowa who gave birth to a daughter in a Pompano Beach hotel room in June of 2007. She was there on vacation with her family and hid her pregnancy. Truitt didn’t just dump the baby though. She dropped minutes old Julianne Truitt 7-stories down the hotel trash chute where she died from the fall.

Truitt was originally facing a life sentence but in a plea deal the charges were reduced to aggravated manslaughter on a child from first degree murder charges. Truitt was just recently sentenced to 13 years behind bars.

The irony here is that Ashley Truitt’s biological mother gave her up for adoption. Rather than doing the same Truitt chose to kill her child. Or maybe in her mind she was just putting something useless out with the trash.
