DNA proves maternity of baby dumper

DNA results confirm teen is dead infant’s mother:

DNA tests are showing that Jessica Mae Betts was indeed the mother of the baby that was found in a dumpster in Turlock, California. In court documents the baby is named Maria Mae Betts.

Betts will be back in court next week.

Turlock baby dumper pleads not guilty

Murder charge, $1 million bail in death of Turlock newborn:

19-year-old Jessica Mae Betts of Turlock, California has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Betts is accused of leaving her newborn in a dumpster to die.

She’s being held on $1M bond and is facing a max of life in prison.

Her next court appearance is scheduled for December 9th.

Turlock baby dumper arrested

Mom held in infant’s death:

Police believe they have arrested the mother of a baby that was abandoned in a dumpster in Turlock, California. Police have arrested 19-year-old Jessica Mae Betts of Turlock. Police say that they’re pretty confident that the baby was born a live and that Betts was unemotional during her interrogation.

California has what they call the Safely Surrendered Baby Law, which is their version of the safe haven law, and allows newborns up to the age of 72 hours to be dropped off at a safe surrender site. People who drop off their newborns have up to 14 days to reclaim the baby if they change their minds.
