Las Vegas breeders arrested when pet python attacks 3-year-old

Parents charged in python attack on 3-year-old son:

Las Vegas Breeders Melissa Melendrez, 25, and Anthony Melendrez, 26, have been arrested on felony child abuse charges after their ‘pet’ python squeezed their 3-year-old son into unconsciousness after biting him.

Melissa Melendrez had to stab the reptile repeatedly with a kitchen knife to get the snake to release her son. Police say the cage was made of wood and fiberglass and was held together with duct tape and weak latches and that Anthiny Melendez nailed the cage shut every night. Does that sound like a secure cage for a snake to you?

The 3-year-old and his 5-year-old brother are now staying with their grandmother and she says that police are overreacting.

Robson said Tuesday she was upset by the way authorities have handled her daughter’s case versus the cases of others involved in animal attacks. She said her grandson didn’t require any stitches and didn’t sustain internal injuries in the incident.

“There’ve been worse dog bites, and how many people keep a dog properly restrained?” Robson said. “It was a freak accident. It was just one of those things that wasn’t planned.”

I bet she would be singing a different tune if her grandson had died.

I know I’ll catch hell for saying this but I don’t care. Is it me or are snakes the #2 trailer trash pet behind pit bulls?

Thanks to Stacey for the tip.
