46-year-old Michael Furey is a teacher at Paulsboro High School in New Jersey. He’s been arrested for luring a 17-year-old girl from the school on MySpace.
Furey allegedly posed as a 16-year-old boy in order to groom this girl over MySpace. Their online relationship is said to have gotten very sexual. The two finally met in real life, or as I like to call it meat space, the girl recognized Furey as being a teacher from the school and left almost immediately. The girl told her mom who told police.
It’s unknown at this time if Furey targeted the girl because she was a student at the school.
Furey has been suspended with pay from his $50K a year position. Not surprisingly since this is New Jersey.
The local police have a great message for parents…
“The message is that child predators aren’t the individuals in long trenchcoats hanging around the school yards,” Dalton said. “They come from all walks of life. They’re online as well and in many instances have regular contact with children, so parents need to be vigilant and stay involved in their children’s lives in order to insure they don’t fall prey.”
Parental involvement. What a concept.
UPDATE 11/3/2013: Furey was convicted. His bond was revoked and is scheduled to be sentenced on November, 29th.
