There’s only been one winner in the case of 12-year-old Brooke Bennett and her killer and uncle Michael Jacques. It’s definitely not Brooke after being kidnapped, raped and killed by Jacques, a sex offender who was released early after completing a ‘program’. It’s not Jacques either as he’s going to do a life sentence in federal prison. No, the only winner here is Jacques’ anti-death penalty defense attorney David Ruhnke.
Runhke not only held up the trial for years with his anti-death penalty arguments but he got the federal prosecutors and Jacques to agree to a life sentence plea. Now he’s even topped himself by getting a federal judge to agree to send Jacques to a prison in Tucson, Arizona, that has a prison population of 65% sex offenders. Your tax dollars at work. The point being that in any other prison Jacques would be a target by other non-child rapist prisoners.
Once again the rights of the criminal have become more important than the rights of the victim, or justice for that matter.
Family confronts Jacques as killer sentenced to life:
It’s been six long years since Michael Jacques brutally raped and murdered his 12-year-old niece, Brooke Bennett. While it hasn’t come to the conclusion I would have hoped it has finally come to a conclusion. After being called a coward by Brooke’s mother when she gave her impact statement to the court Jacques was sentenced to life in prison plus 70 years with no possibility of parole. While Vermont has no death penalty Jacques was looking at a federal death penalty since he used MySpace and the internet to lure Brooke to her death. Last August Jacques pleaded guilty in a move which saw him spared the death penalty.
In a statement at his sentencing Jacques said he was sorry and ashamed. Probably only sorry and ashamed that he got caught.
Jacques was also a registered sex offender who was released early for completing a ‘program’.
Maybe Brooke’s spirit can finally get some peace.
Vt. Man Pleads Guilty to Kidnapping, Killing Niece:
Yesterday registered sex offender Michael Jacques pleaded guilty to the 2008 kidnapping, rape and murder of his then 12-year-old niece Brooke Bennett and the subsequent cover-up. As I posted before this was all done sp Jacques could avoid a federal death sentence. That’s all this story has really been all about ever since Jacques anti-death penalty lawyers got involved. For years they delayed justice for Brooke all to prove a point about the death penalty. While this should feel like a victory it doesn’t. Let’s hear from Jacques’ lawyer…
“We just think this was a fair and enlightened way to resolve this case,” his attorney, David Ruhnke, said afterward.
All this was to him was a challenge to see if he could get one of the most heinous criminals in the country out of a death sentence. In my opinion he didn’t care about Jacques and he sure as hell didn’t care about Brooke. All that Ruhnke cared about was a high-profile deal that made him look good.
He won. Justice didn’t.
Feds call off death penalty in Jacques case:
Friday: Jacques to Plead Guilty in Death of 12-Year-Old Niece:
It’s been five years since the brutal kidnapping, rape and murder of 12=year-old Brooke Bennett by her sex offender uncle Michael Jacques in Vermont. After all the legal wrangling, delays and outright sheer arrogance of Michael Jacques’ anti-death penalty defense team it seems that a conclusion is finally at hand. Not the conclusion I was hoping for but a conclusion nonetheless.
Vermont has no death penalty however prosecutors alleged that since Jacques used MySpace and the internet not only to contrive and try to cover up his crime that this constituted interstate communication making him eligible for the federal death penalty. Now, according to reports, a plea deal is in the works where Jacques will plead guilty and will be sentenced to life without parole and will waive any appeals. It seems that this deal was made after Jacques high-profile anti-death penalty lawyers requested the deal from US Attorney General Eric Holder.
While I’m glad that the end of this ordeal for Brooke’s family is more than likely coming to a close I am disappointed that Jacques is escaping the needle. That’s all his lawyers ever wanted and Eric Holder has given it to them. For them this is a victory.
No date has been set for when Jacques will enter his plea. If history is any indicator in this case nothing is definite.
This doesn’t feel like justice, it feels more like appeasement.
Michael Jacques trial delayed until Sept. 2013:
It’s been since Michael Jacques allegedly kidnapped, raped and murdered his niece, 12-year-old Brooke Bennett. Jacques not only used MySpace to groom his niece but also altered Brooke’s MySpace to make it look like she ran away. The trial has been delayed numerous times over the years since it’s a federal death penalty case that’s being tried in Vermont. Now it’s been delayed one more time for another 14 months.
Jacques has a high-profile anti-death penalty defense team and it seems that they have another case to defend that will take up to 6 months. You have got to be kidding me, right?
That’s a picture of Brooke Bennett before she was raped, strangled and killed. If she were alive today she would be getting her driver’s license and thinking about her junior prom in her coming school year. Instead she’s in the ground with her last memory being that of her uncle compressing the life out of her with her bare hands.
Her death cries out for justice not for the placation of a lawyer who has ‘other commitments’.
Prosecutors: Murder suspect Jacques killed dog to intimidate girl into helping with Brooke Bennett plot:
In case there was any doubt this should show just how much of an actual monster Michael Jacques is. For those of you not familiar with the case Jacques of Vermont is accused of kidnapping, raping and killing his 12-year-old niece, Brooke Bennett. Jacques allegedly altered her MySpace page in order to make it look like she ran away.
Federal prosecutors say that Jacques killed the dog of another 12-year-old girl and hung it in her basement to serve as a warning. Jacques allegedly used the girl as a pawn in his plan to get Brooke to his house. Jacques is said to have made up an international child sex ring called ‘Breckenridge’ in order to intimidate the girl into delivering Brooke into his clutches.
As always when posting about Jacques he is a registered sex offender who was released early from prison after completing a ‘program’ for sex offenders. Obviously it didn’t work.
Jacques is facing the death penalty under federal guidelines. He has an anti-death penalty team of lawyers who keep trying to claim it’s unconstitutional. I can barely think of anybody more deserving of an execution that Jacques. It’s just a shame they don’t use the electric chair or the gallows anymore.
Judge affirms Jacques to face death penalty:
In a small victory for not only justice but for common sense a federal judge has ruled that Michael Jacques will be facing the death penalty.
Jacques is accused in the 2008 kidnapping, rape and murder of his 12-year-old niece Brooke Bennett. Jacques also allegedly altered Brooke’s MySpace to make it look like she ran away.
Jacques has an anti-death penalty defense team who argued that since Vermont doesn’t have a death penalty that Jacques should not be sentenced to it even in a federal case.
U.S. District Judge William Sessions III, in a 14-page decision issued Friday, wrote that to apply a “state-based” standard in such instances “would effectively be sanctioning and contributing to geographic disparities in application of the federal death penalty.”
Considering that Jacques used interstate communications including the internet to not only commit and to try to cover up his crime more than makes this the proverbial federal case.
Again if you go through my past posts about Brooke Bennett’s murder you will have to agree that the death penalty was custom-made for a scumbag pedophile like Jacques.
Death penalty sought for Michael Jacques:
It’s finally official. Federal prosecutors have formally filed that they will be seeking the death penalty for Michael Jacques.
If you’re new to the site, Jacques, of Vermont, was arrested for the brutal rape and murder of his 12-year-old niece Brooke Bennett. Jacques is also accused of using the internet to try to cover his tracks. In one instance he allegedly hacked into Brooke’s MySpace to make it look like she ran away. That has allowed Jacques to be tried in federal court instead of Vermont court since Vermont does not have the death penalty.
Jacques was a registered sex offender who was released early because he completed a ‘program’.
Jacques has a defense team that consists of some high-profile anti-death penalty attorneys. If you read all my posts about Jacques you’ll tend to agree with me that the death penalty was tailor-made for a piece of scum like him.
I’m thinking of calling this site Last Week’s News since I’m so far behind.
Anyway last week a U.S. District Court Judge ruled that federal prosecutors can pursue the death penalty against Michael Jacques. As you may know Jacques is accused of kidnapping, raping and killing his 12-year-old niece, Brooke Bennett.
Jacques has a defense team made up of anti-death penalty lawyers and they had argued that the death penalty is unconstitutional. The judge ruled that…
…the Second Circuit (Court of Appeals) and the Supreme Court precludes this court from holding the federal death penalty unconstitutional based upon the risk of executing the innocent,”
The crimes took place in Vermont which does not have a death penalty but since Jacques used MySpace and the internet to allegedly commit the crimes it became a federal case.
The judge also ruled that the trial will not be moved out of Vermont.
The trial is set to take place in September of 2011, three years after Brooke’s brutal murder.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again that scum like Jacques are more than deserving for the death penalty.
The defense team for accused child rapist and killer, Michael Jacques, are trying to get his federal trial moved out of Vermont because of a poll that supposedly says that most Vermonters know what Michael Jacques did.
For those of you who may not know Jacques is accused of kidnapping, raping and killing his 12-year-old niece Brooke Bennett. He’s being tried on federal charges because he used MySpace and the internet to not only commit the crime but also to try to cover it up.
Since he’s being tried by the feds that means he’s eligible for the death penalty even though Vermont does not have it. His lawyers are anti-death penalty advocates who are trying everything within their means to get their client spared the death penalty no matter what ridiculous ideas they keep coming up with. As usual these defense attorneys in extreme cases like this keep trying what I call spaghetti defenses. They keep throwing everything against the wall to see if anything will stick.
The only thing that should be sticking to Jacques is the tape they’ll use to attach the IV to Jacques’ arm.
