Dylan Lentini sentenced to 20 years in craigslist roommate killing

Dylan Lentini sentenced to 20 years in craigslist roommate killing

Dylan Lentini

This past Tuesday, a now 20-year-old Dylan Lentini was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the stabbing murder of his craigslist roommate, Michael Wimbert of West Nyack, New York. Lentini argued that he killed Wimbert in self-defense as the much larger 68-year-old man was trying to rape him.

Lentini reportedly was causing disruptions in court earlier in the day proclaiming his innocence and interrupting proceedings. Court was in recess for two hours before the judge rendered the sentence. Several people had sent letters and testimony to the court claiming that Wimbert was sexually inappropriate with many other people however, the judge felt the fact that Lentini did not meet the self-defense criteria since he stabbed Wimbert 30 times. Lentini’s own sister even told local New York news that he was manipulative and capable of violence.

It seems that in this instance that no one is a good guy and there is no happy ending.

Yesterday, 19-year-old Dylan Lentini was convicted in the murder of his roommate, 66-year-old Michael Wimbert of West Nyack, New York. Lentini was homeless when he responded to Wimebrt’s craigslist ad that was looking for a young gay roommate. Lentini stabbed Wimbert close to 30 times, but claimed self-defense saying that the much heavier man tried to rape him. At one point it looked promising for Lentini when he had a number of charges against him dropped and had several of supporters who believed he was a victim. However, his own sister was convinced that Lentini killed Wimbert.

Personally, I have my own doubts about this story. While Wimbert’s craigslist ad makes it appear he was looking for a ‘roommate with benefits’, which has lead to sexual assaults in the past, the number of times Lentini stabbed Wimbert makes me have doubts about the self-defense claim. Unfortunately, there’s not always a clear-cut ending.

Lentini is looking at a term of 25 to life when he is scheduled to be sentenced on November 29th.

There has been some question as to whether or not Dylan Lentini killed 66-year-old Michael Wimbert of West Nyack, New York, in self-defense or cold blood. A 19-year-old Lentini started rooming with the elder Wimbert after responding to the older man’s ad for a roommate on craigslist. Lentini claims that he stabbed Wimbert almost 30 times in self-defense after Wimbert sexually assaulted him. If this was the ad that Wimbert placed that does not sound too farfetched. Lentini has also has several vocal supporters who claim that he is innocent, however his own sister is not one of them.

Lentini’s half-sister, 21-year-old Ashara Smith, believes in her heart that Lentini is guilty. She claims that Lentini is indeed capable of this level of violence and that he was playing Michael Wimbert. She believes that Lentini was manipulative and heavy drug user who is said to have allegedly killed two kittens. She also claims to be in fear for her life if he were to ever get out of jail.

Do I believe that she’s telling the truth? That remains to be seen. I have seen people tell more malicious lies to suit their own needs but her account of events should not be dismissed just yet, at least not without a reason for why she might lie.

In the almost 16 years of this website I have believed that only three people who I’ve posted about were either wrongly convicted or arrested. I may now have a fourth.

I originally posted about Dylan Lentini here and here. He was arrested last year for the alleged stabbing murder of 66-year-old Michael Wimbert of West Nyack, New York.

Since that time all the counts of robbery in the first degree have been dropped as have three of the four murder in the second degree charges. Lentini has maintained that he killed Wimbert in self-defense stating that Wimbert kept trying to force himself upon the teen. Lentiti had a laceration of his own in his hand and yelled to neighbors to call 911 after fleeing the scene.

The only thing that keeps me from fully believing that Lentini acted in self-defense is the amount of stab wounds that Wimbert received and that was 24. Although with the robbery charges dropped I’m not seeing much of a motive for murder.

I’ll continue to keep an eye on this story for further details.

UPDATE 5/8/2016: Lentini recently gave a jailhouse interview claiming that Wimbert had raped him.

New twist in NY roommate killing

In my last post about the murder of 66-year-old Michael Wimbert in West Nyack, New York, I said that it did not appear to be ‘roommate with benefits’ situation. I may have been wrong about that. The Rockland County Times is saying that this could be the ad placed by victim Michael Wimbert…

In my opinion that looks exactly like a roommate with benefits ad.

This is important now because the alleged killer, 19-year-old Dylan Lentini, has pleaded not guilty and is claiming that Wimbert tried to molest him and he acted out of self-defense. However I have doubts about that too since Wimbert was recovering from eye surgery and I wonder if lethal force was a necessary self-defense.

I’m still not ready to classify this as your ‘normal’ craigslist killing. Also how sad is it that there are craigslist killings that are considered normal?

19-year-old charged in possible NY craigslist killing

19-year-old Dylan Lentini has been charged with allegedly stabbing 66-year-old Michael Wimbert to death after responding to a craigslist ad for a roommate. Lentini responded to the ad last Friday with the murder taking place this past Tuesday in the West Nyack, New York, home of the victim.

This doesn’t appear to be a ‘roommate with benefits’ situation either…

He may have needed a roommate to help pay his rent and bills. His landlord said Wimbert had been recovering from eye surgery and had problems finding work.

The motive for the murder has not been made public at this time so I’m hesitant to call it a ‘craigslist killing’ just yet. I’ll post more details as they become available.
