The MRSA vaping myth spreads like….well….MRSA

San Diego County in California has instituted a public vaping ban in places where smoking is already prohibited. Again, I have no problem with this. Like I’ve said many times before as former smokers we should be used to this. Also as I’ve said before anyone that goes into a place where smoking is prohibited and tries to vape expecting to get hassled is a douchebag, but I digress.

The problem I have is with the local FOX affiliate in San Diego using the very slanted MRSA study as a scare tactic.

A UC study, however, recently concluded that vapor from e-cigarettes trigged defense mechanisms in MRSA, or Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, making the already hard-to-kill superbug harder to kill.

At least the Daily Mail had the decency to include in their article that smoking makes MRSA even worse and that you have to catch MRSA in the first place for vaping or smoking to have any relevance.

I’m beginning to wonder when someone is going to make a legit Reefer Madeness type movie about vaping if there isn’t already one.

Daily Mail: Vaping will give you the flesh eating disease

Ok, they really didn’t say that but they might as well have with this troll-tastic headline…

Are e-cigarette smokers at risk from superbugs? Vapour helps deadly bacteria to thrive, say scientists

The superbug in question they’re referring to is MRSA. While it’s not the flesh eating disease, aka necrotizing fasciitis, it’s still a pretty nasty bug to get. So how do vapers get this lovely infection?

A study found that vapour from trendy e-cigarettes makes the hard-to-treat MRSA superbug more toxic.

And, in a double whammy, the nicotine-laden vapour also weakens the body’s ability to fight the multi-antibiotic resistant bug.

Most people will stop reading right there and will bleat on about how dangerous vaping is but buried deep in the article is this little tidbit.

However, the study also failed to give real cigarettes a clean bill of health. In fact, they were found to fuel MRSA even more than the electronic versions.

Still in either case you have to come into contact with MRSA first. The headline would have you believe that you get MRSA just from vaping which is just another arrow in the quiver of misinformation.

5-year-old boy beaten and chased with chainsaw

UPDATE: Beaten 5-year-old opens eyes Friday:

Father charged with beating 5-year-old son:

A 5-year-old boy from Jasper, Texas is in grave condition after receiving a beating so bad he coughed up blood and was allegedly chased by his father who was wielding a chainsaw. 24-year-old John Clyde Cornelius allegedly beat the boy over favoritism shown to the boy by his grandmother. Cornelius is said to have chased the boy with a chainsaw while the boy had an injured leg.

The boy is in serious condition. He’s on a ventilator, has had three surgeries and is fighting a MRSA infection.

Also arrested were 27 year old Jessie Lillian Waddell, she’s either the step-monster or vagina depending on which article you read, and 54-year-old Wanda Kay Macks, the vagina’s mother. They were arrested for failing to report child abuse.

Four other kids were taken from the home.

Thanks to Cassandra for the tip.
