Man arrested in Naperville for soliciting teen through Kik

Chicago man arrested in Naperville on sex charges:

Carlos Lopez

Carlos Lopez

Back in the MySpace days Naperville, Illinois, was sort of an anomaly. It had an inordinate amount of MySpace creepers. Not as many as Connecticut but enough for me to take notice. I’d like to think that was the case because the Naperville police were on top of things. Well, it’s been a few years but we go back to Naperville for a story that’s a bit more modern but just as scary.

38-year-old Carlos Lopez of Chicago was arrested for allegedly soliciting a minor for sex through the messaging app Kik. Now for someone to get your kids’ Kik ID in most cases your kid would have to give it up. Kids have no problem with making their Kik IDs public. They figure since it’s not their cell number it’s safe to give out, but of course it isn’t. In this case the victim may have posted their Kik ID on the website/app Waplog. What’s Waplog you ask? I never heard of it until today either but it’s just another social network where anyone can meet strangers where the site/app has no regard for age. Basically it’s a MeetMe clone which there are way too many of these days.

It’s even more dangerous today for kids to be online than it was back in the MySpace years because of the smart phone apps out there. So now not only do parents have to worry about what their kids are doing on the computer but their smartphones too. Make sure you know what apps your kids have on their phones and who their friends are on these apps. Otherwise you’re just giving predators a way to reach your kids 24/7.

Naperville predator kills himself

Convicted rapist hangs himself in cell after arrest, prison officials say:

About a week ago I posted about Bryan Halstead He was arrested in Naperville, Illinois for trying to meet an underage girl he met on MySpace. Halstead was already a convicted sex offender for the 1986 rape of a 13-year-old girl and shooting her father.

It seems that Mr. Halstead decided to save the courts a lot of time and resources. Halstead hanged himself in his cell shortly after his arrest.

Thanks to Mike for the tip.

Another predator in Naperville

Naperville police say paroled rapist tried to lure girl online:

It’s been a while since I posted a story about Naperville, Illinois but here we are. Outside of Connecticut, Naperville seems like the MySpace predator capital of the world.

This time paroled rapist Bryan E. Halstead, 44, of Chicago Heights was arrested in Naperville for posing as a teenage boy to meet an underage girl. The underage girl was actually Naperville police.

There originally was a girl but her astute parents discovered Halstead’s message and contacted police.

Another Naperville pedo gets caught

MySpace page leads to charges:

Is there something in the water in Naperville, Illinois? This is the third or fourth predator story that I’ve posted about that has happened in Naperville. Is it the pedo holy land of the Midwest?

Anyway, 30-year-old Anthony Kershaw, formerly of Naperville, was arrested Friday on child porn charges. Police were tipped off to “suspicious activity” on a MySpace that he created.

A forensic examination of a computer seized from Kershaw’s former Naperville home revealed 100 images of child pornography, police said.

That’s not a small number. Maybe they should make a law that says for every piece of child porn you get caught with you get a year in prison. 100 years for this creep sounds about right doesn’t it?

John Wentworth sentenced

MySpace sex offender gets 3½ years in prison:

Another pioneer of the MySpace predators has been sentenced. John Wentworth of Naperville, Illinois was sentenced to only 3 1/2 years behind bars for having sexual contact with an underage teen he met on MySpace. As far as I can tell Wentworth only had internet contact with his victims. I wonder how many have not come forward since the article states he would send out 50 messages a day on MySpace.

“This is not an isolated incident or a single offense,” Judge Perry Thompson said as he sentenced Wentworth. Wentworth was charged last year with two felonies after he met a 15-year-old Naperville girl online and then during a subsequent meeting engaged in sexual activity with her.

“This event devastated my family,” the teen, now 16, said in court before sentencing.

I’m sure the judge’s hands were tied with sentencing but 3 1/2 years is not enough to discourage this predator from trying again.

Jay Coffield sentenced

MySpace Predator Sentenced:

I originally posted about Jay Coffield here.

JOLIET, Ill. — A man who used the popular, youth-oriented Web site to arrange a sexual tryst with an underage Naperville girl has been sentenced to two years and two months in prison for that crime.

Will County Circuit Court Judge Daniel Rozak meted out the prison term to Jay D. Coffield, 44, of Morris, state’s attorney James Glasgow confirmed Monday in a written statement.

Coffield pleaded guilty Friday to a felony charge of indecent solicitation of a child. The allegation stemmed from his efforts earlier this year to arrange a sexual rendezvous with a 14-year-old Naperville girl.

The girl’s 21-year-old cousin contacted Naperville police Detective Rich Wistocki on May 22, after discovering “inappropriate comments” directed at the teenager on the girl’s MySpace page, Glasgow said.

“Taking a page from the online watchdog group Perverted Justice, this amateur sleuth set up her own undercover account online and began talking to Coffield online,” Glasgow said of the girl’s cousin.

She then turned her account and other information over to Wistocki, the Naperville Police Department’s Internet Crimes Unit investigator, Glasgow said.

Wistocki, posing as the teenager, continued corresponding with Coffield, who used the MySpace screen name of Mistercee42.

Coffield ultimately suggested the girl meet him the evening of June 9 in a coffee shop near 95th Street and Route 59 on Naperville’s far southwest side. He indicated he would then take her to DuPage River Park, near Royce Road and Naper Boulevard on the city’s far southeast side, where they would have sex, police said in June.

Coffield arrived at the coffee shop around 6:15 p.m. and was arrested immediately. Coffield, who had no criminal record at the time, told police it was the first time he had tried to arrange a meeting with a girl he had chatted with over the Internet.

“No longer an anonymous Internet surfer looking for vulnerable children, Jay Coffield now will have a public prison sentence and his face online among other Illinois registered sex offenders,” Glasgow said.

“Instead of just picking up the pieces after a child has been violated, we were able to expose and punish a predator before a child’s life was tragically affected.”

Jay Coffield

Police say man arranged sex with girl, 14, on Myspace:

NAPERVILLE — Naperville police have arrested another man accused of soliciting sex from a teenage girl on the popular social networking Web site

Jay D. Coffield, 44, of Morris was arrested about 6:15 p.m. Friday in a Naperville coffee shop where he had planned to meet the girl, 14, police said.

Coffield, who used the screen name “Mistercee42” on, was charged with felony indecent solicitation of a child, and was taken to the Will County Jail in Joliet.

Police were alerted to Coffield by a relative of the girl, who said the man had tried to set up a meeting with her.

Police then had several online chats with Coffield and set up the encounter at the coffee shop. Coffield had planned to meet the girl there Friday night and take her to the DuPage River Park and engage in sex, police said.

Here is his MySpace. (Not Safe For Work) He has a video of some cam-ho doing a striptease and under who he’d like to meet it says “I’d love to hear from anyone and everyone! All people of all age groups are welcome.”

This is the second arrest in so many weeks in Naperville Ill. The last one was John Wentworth.

John R. Wentworth

2nd accuser in abuse case tied to Web site:

I told you about John R. Wentworth briefly before. At the time he was alleged to have inappropriate contact with at least 3 underage girls. Well, another victim has come forward…

NAPERVILLE — Investigators said a second accuser has come forward in the case of a Naperville man who allegedly used a popular Web site to contact teenage girls for sex, police said Friday.

John R. Wentworth, 27, was arrested May 9 near the Riverwalk in downtown Naperville where he allegedly had gone to meet whom he thought would be a 14-year-old girl.

A DuPage County Grand Jury indicted Wentworth on a felony charge of indecent solicitation of a child and distribution of harmful materials. Wentworth also was charged with attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse and aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Naperville police said the sex abuse charges are from contact Wentworth had with a 15-year-old Naperville girl. He had a Web page on where he posted sexually explicit photos of himself, police said.

The Naperville Police Internet Crimes Unit continues to investigate and wants to speak to anyone who had contact with Wentworth. His screen name was “Johnwinter78” on and AOL instant messenger.

The telephone number for the unit is 630-305-5384.
