Something has been bothering me ever since craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster said that craigslist is safer than the city of Oakland, California.
Now I’ll admit I can be slow on the uptake sometimes, and this is one of those times, so bear with me.
It hit me that comparing craigslist to Oakland is like comparing the proverbial apples and oranges since craigslist isn’t a city. Even a city as crime infested as Oakland has a police department that does its best to control crime. In a city as bad as Oakland it has citizens that still report crime.
Craigslist on the other hand does not have its own police force. It does not monitor its ads and does nothing to discourage criminals from committing crimes on its website. Also on the other hand craigslist’s ‘citizens’ do not report crime, ie community policing. Instead the ads that are usually flagged on craigslist are flagged by people who are engaged in illegal activity in craigslist.
So in reality the crimes that were listed by the AIM Group study are only those that were officially reported to law enforcement then the media.
God only knows how many actual crimes have been committed using craigslist as a proxy.
Instead of the cesspool of crime that craigslist is being called it may be more like an entire sewer system of crime.
Oakland man arrested after child thrown in traffic:
Oakland man arrested after throwing baby into traffic:
Father charged with tossing toddler into traffic:
21-year-old John Taylor Jr. has been arrested for shaking and throwing his 18-month-old daughter into Oakland, California traffic. While she did fall under a car luckily she only received minor burns and scrapes.
Taylor also ran into other cars, slamming against them and even broke out the windshield of one. When police caught up with him he had to be Tasered.
What makes this worse is how he’s being defended.
Let’s hear from Taylor’s brother…
“He has PTSD, post-traumatic stress disorder,” said English. “We’ve been in group homes for a long time… they use us as guinea pigs giving us medication.”
Watch the video for the full effect from the brother’s quote.
Even the girl’s mother had a bizarre quote in the press…
…she believes Taylor only threw the child into traffic to get her out of danger because he was under attack.
Under attack from what? And if the family knew that Taylor was this mentally unbalanced why was he allowed to be with the child in the first place.
This sounds more like a drug related episode to me than anything else and not the kind you get in group homes.
Thanks to Christine for the tip.
Police say mother admits to suffocating 2-year-old:
Oakland police say that 19-year-old Tiffany Lopez admitted to suffocating her own daughter, 2-year-old Kamilah Russell because she was overwhelmed. Lopez and her boyfriend also have a 6-month-old and Lopez is currently 3 months pregnant.
Lopez gave some BS story about how she accidentally sat on the child after the girl crawled under the couch while they were playing hide and seek.
Lopez’s mother allegedly had told CPS that her daughter had a ‘chemical imbalance’ and needed help. Lopez has a previous record of abusing her daughter before.
Whenever I see the parents of an alleged killer say their child needed help it makes me wonder why they didn’t get her help.
Thanks to Marci for the tip.
Police: Oakland Student Raped, Attacker Met Online:
You know while all the soccer moms and do gooders are ranting and raving about MySpace, craigslist keeps sneaking in under the radar…
(AP) OAKLAND An Alameda man is under arrest for allegedly raping a graduate student who answered a classified ad on a popular Web site.
Police say a 31-year-old student at Mills College in Oakland was raped Thursday night after answering an ad on Craigslist offering modelling jobs.
49-year-old Gregory Hayes was picked up by police Friday morning after the woman spotted him at a gas station near campus.
Police say the woman sent her alleged attacker e-mails and talked to him on the phone before he arrived at her on-campus residence claiming he had a gun and raped her in his van.
Hayes asked for a lawyer after his arrest and refused to talk to investigators. Police are investigating whether he met other women on Craigslist.
At least MySpace is making attempts to keep their userbase safe. Craigslist doesn’t do anything.
Oakland Man Indicted For Pimping Teens On Web:
OAKLAND — An Oakland man — captured after a footchase on a Las Vegas street — has been indicted on charges he used using various Web sites, including Craigslist, to prostitute two girls under the age of 18, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Prosecutors said a federal grand jury in Oakland has indicted 34-year-old Marcus Sewell Aug. 10 on charges of sex trafficking of children and transporting minors in interstate commerce with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity.
According to the indictment, Sewell is alleged to have prostituted the two teenage girls and transported them from Northern California, Nevada and Florida for the purpose of prostituting themselves between April 2005 and June 2006.
The indictment alleges that Sewell advertised the girls as escorts on Craigslist and other Web sites.
The maximum sentence for sex trafficking of children is life in prison and a $250,000 fine.
The maximum sentence for transporting a minor in interstate commerce with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity is 30 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
This is no less than human trafficking and should carry more than just a life sentence and $250K fine. How about life without parole and a $2.5M fine?
