We get letters: An error in my terminology

hatemail

I received the following e-mail from Tim. Tim says…

Hey Trench – I enjoy reading your blog but thought I’d point out an error in your terminology.

You commonly refer to men attracted to teenage girls as ‘pedophiles’ when this is not the case. Attraction to teenage girls is considered ‘hebophilia’ which actually is not considered a mental disorder, as it is biologically normal to be attracted to post-pubescent individuals.

We as a society have chosen to infantilize teenagers when it comes to sex but treat them as adults when they commit crimes. It seems a little out of whack to me. Thoughts?

I checked the archives because I could have sworn I got this e-mail before. I guess it’s because this is an argument I’ve heard before.

First off, you may want to learn the terminology yourself of the various concepts you’re discussing. A brief Google search would show you that hebephilia, which is what I believe you’re trying to spell, is the sexual attraction to early pubescent girls ages 11 to 14. Ephebophilia is the adult sexual interest in mid-to-late adolescents ages 15-19. This what I believe you’re actually trying to defend. The problem with these terms, along with the term pedophilia, is that all three indicate the sexual desire of children, hence why the term pedophile is often used interchangeably. Whether you consider it ‘biologically normal’ is irrelevant since having sex with minors is illegal in all 50 states.

When you say that we ‘infantilize teenagers when it comes to sex but treat them as adults when they commit crimes’ you’re comparing apples to oranges. Crime, especially murder, has clear lines that everyone knows. Murder is wrong, you will be arrested and you will go to jail. Sex is drastically more complicated than that. Children, of either sex, who are exposed to sexual activity or content at too young of age can end up having unhealthy or abnormal idea about sex. Predators know this and use this naiveté to prey upon their victims.

It seems like your e-mail can be summed up with a phrase that a multitude of predators have used when they say that ‘age is just a number.’

Pedophiles target 10-year-old on YouTube

youtube

In Pine Grove Township, Indiana authorities are saying that a group of sexual predators targeted a 10-year-old boy through YouTube. Now don’t get ahead of me yet, we’ll get to that in a second.

Police are saying that the predators posed as 14-year-old girls and coerced the boy into posting nude videos of himself on YouTube which he did. He got requests for more videos like that and the boy deleted the original video. He then started receiving threats if he did not post more videos.

The boy’s mother discovered what was going on because she receives copies of the e-mails sent to her son.So far the suspects remain at large.

Now while I think it’s a great idea to have copies of your kids’ e-mails sent to the parents account let’s discuss the 800 pound gorilla in the room. What in the blue hell was a 10-year-old doing with his own YouTube channel? Are you high? Have you ever read the comments from a typical YouTube user? Let’s also not gloss over the fact that the 10-year-old allegedly claimed to be 16 on YouTube. I seriously doubt he was fooling anybody.

Look parents, YouTube is no place for a 10-year-old. Hell, it’s not a place for most children if they can’t handle the verbal abuse that will be heaped upon them by the entirety of YouTube.

And again good job YouTube for the community policing that caught the video before it could fall into the wrong hands. Oh wait, it didn’t.

Vigilante using YouTube to lure pedophiles

youtube

Queensland vigilante luring pedophiles on YouTube:

An Australian vigilante is using YouTube in order to lure pedophiles out in the open. Allegedly he poses on YouTube as a 13-year-old boy. The article doesn’t elaborate but it sounds like he uses YouTube to set up meetings with the pedophiles then gets all their personal info to post it to YouTube.

Law enforcement and child advocacy groups are hoping to discourage this kind of activity as it could lead to child molesters getting off of their charges.

To all would be vigilantes out there. You’re not as smart as you think you are and you’re probably doing more harm than good.

LiveJournal's backpedaling continues

The other day I posted about how LiveJournal had not purged all of its pedophiles. I notified LiveJournal of a disturbing account of one of their users who professed to wanting to have sex with a 9-year-old girl he babysits. The following is LJ’s response…

Dear LiveJournal user,

Thank you for your report. As we have posted in our News journal, http://news.livejournal.com, LiveJournal is currently reviewing our policy regarding matters such as these. We wanted to let you know that your report will be evaluated once this review is complete.

I get the feeling this is going to be more of the same from LJ.

LiveJournal, where pedophiles flourish.

LiveJournal missed a few

Rob from Steaming Pile of Blog left me a comment about the recent “purge” of pedophiles from LiveJournal. Apparently LiveJournal missed a few accounts of some pedophiles. Rob sent me the link to one of the accounts that was still standing. It was a rather disturbing account about how a “man” who was babysitting a 9-year-old girl and went into graphic detail about he wanted to have sex with her.

I’ve reported it to LiveJournal. Let’s see how long they take to do anything about it.

LiveJournal's pedophile revolt

Mass deletion sparks LiveJournal revolt:

A site by the name of Warriors for Innocence has done something that I’ve been trying to do for years. They convinced LiveJournal to finally delete all the pedophile journals and communities that they were guilty of hosting. For years LiveJournal tried to defend the pedophiles by claiming free speech. At the time I didn’t realize that LiveJournal is a branch of the government. But it seems they’ve finally come to their senses.

LiveJournal, which is owned by San Francisco-based Six Apart, confirmed Wednesday that it deleted around 500 journals this week in hopes of better “protecting children.” It said the deletion was prompted by activist groups, including one called Warriors for Innocence that claims to track sites promoting pedophilia, the sexual abuse of minors, and other illegal activities.

500? That’s weaker than MySpace’s 7,000 sex offenders. But it’s a start.

Of course we have people complaining about it…

Some deleted LiveJournal communities went by names like childlove and little_children (a community permits multiple LiveJournal users to post entries, while an individual account is limited to one user). Others, however, broadly fall into the category of science fiction, fantasy or user-written “fandom” stories–and it is those that have sparked the outcry.

“As a queer, feminist writer who explores the darker aspects of human nature, many of my stories deal with incest, rape and child molestation,” a LiveJournal member named “bitterfig” wrote. “As such, I belonged to and contributed to several of the communities which have been suspended and frankly I’m pretty offended. I don’t like being lumped in with rapists and pedophiles and other ‘monsters on the Web.'”

One now-deleted group called “pornish_pixies” focused on fan-written fiction, frequently sexually explicit, about characters in the Harry Potter novels. “The distinction between fiction and non-fiction could not be made any clearer in a place like the Harry Potter fandom, and this oversteps the boundaries that the LiveJournal abuse team has,” said a pornish_pixies member who identified herself as Maria in an e-mail. (A related group, “erotic_elves,” has survived the purge.)

That just sounds like erotica for pedophiles if you ask me.

The infamous LiveJournal abuse team had this to say about the mass (can you call 500 out of 13M mass?) deletions…

For its part, LiveJournal’s abuse staff has defended pulling the plug on the communities by saying: “Material which can be interpreted as expressing interest in, soliciting or encouraging illegal activity places LiveJournal at considerable legal risk.”

Which is 180 degrees from what they told me two years ago…

Dear LiveJournal User thetrenchcoat,

As explained in our previous response to you, it is neither against the Terms of Service nor illegal to discuss illegal actions, or to admit to having committed them. As long as the content posted does not solicit illegal activity, it is considered allowable under both the Terms of Service and the ideal of free speech. LiveJournal is committed to preserving as much free speech as possible for its users, as long as that speech does not cross the line into invading other users’ privacy.

Users are entitled to post about topics that may be abhorrent to much of the general population, so long as they do not cross the line into solicitation or instruction of illegal acts. We respectfully suggest, if the posts in this community disturb you, that you simply cease reading them.

Anyway LiveJournal users are revolting (insert joke here) over claims of censorship and terminating their LJ accounts. Like LiveJournal is even going to miss you. If there are 13 Million users all those revolting won’t even be a drop in the bucket. Personally I think this would be a huge marketing gimmick for LJ. They can say “hey look we get rid of our pedophiles unlike MySpace”. You would think that would attract more users, especially parents concerned about their kids’ online safety.

However I get the feeling that LiveJournal will cave and it will be back to business as usual.

In the meantime I need to talk with the Warriors for Innocence people to see how they did it.

Sex offender poses as 12-year-old to enter middle school

Sex offender applies for school as a boy:

That charming gentleman pictured at right is Neil Havens Rodreick II. He’s a 29-year-old man who tried applying to an Arizona middle school as a 12-year-old boy. It’s believed that he did that in order to lure children into dangerous and vile relationships. If you think he couldn’t pass as a 12-year-old think again because he fooled at least two other men. One of those men, 61-year-old Lonnie Stiffler, was claiming to be Roderick’s grandfather when they tried getting him into the school. Stiffler and 43-year-old Robert James Snow, were shocked to find out that they were having sex with a 29-year-old man and not a 12-year-old boy. Roderick allegedly kept them fooled by using makeup and shaving his body hair.

Well we don’t have a MySpace for Roderick but thanks to LiLO we do have the MySpace for Robert Snow.

Men caught in 14-year-old's bed

Men Arrested In MySpace Sex Case:

These two attractive gentlemen are Jover Mabaet and Dennis Keomoungkhoune of Portland, Oregon. Both are 21 and have been arrested for engaging in sexual activities with a 14-year-old girl they met on MySpace. The victim’s father caught them both in bed with his daughter. To make matters worse Mabaet was already under investigation for possibly having a relationship with another underage girl and Keomoungkhoune is already a registered sex offender.

Now I couldn’t find a MySpace for Keomoungkhoune but I did find one for Mabaet. According to the article he’s 21 but on his MySpace he claims to be 17.

PedoJournal

You know I pick on MySpace, and Xanga, and once in a great while Facebook, but there’s one name that hasn’t been mentioned on this site so far. One that in my personal opinion is more dangerous than Xanga and MySpace put together. That would be LiveJournal.

Check out this interview on MSNBC with Xavier Von Erck, the director of operations of Perverted Justice…

VAN ERCK: Yahoo! recently has closed down all their teen rooms and is trying to keep teens out of their chat services. But still, they don’t have any moderators, and they can still do more.

MySpace is actually trying to play catch-up now with a staff that tries to eliminate predators from their services.

But there’s also other sites out there that are just as dangerous, such as LiveJournal, which does not have any policies restricting pedophiles from their web site. And in fact, they’ve said so publicly.

CARLSON: They have said out loud, pedophiles are welcome to use this site. Not prohibited from it.

VAN ERCK: Nothing in their terms of service restricts them.

CARLSON: Wow. That’s a little bit over the top.

Well, I can do Mr. Van Erck one better than he did in this interview. Not too long ago myself and a few other crime bloggers went after LiveJournal for allowing pedophile communities to proliferate within LiveJournal. This was the response that I got…

Dear LiveJournal User thetrenchcoat,

So basically LiveJournal doesn’t care that there are groups of people congregating within their virtual walls that share their fantasies about having sex with their daughter with other pedophiles. True story.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to these types of situations. The first one is let them operate out in the open so law enforcement can keep better tabs on them. Or drive them back to pre-internet days where instead of a global community of pedophiles there were only pockets of them where it was even more difficult to get to our children.

LiveJournal can either do one of two things. They can clear out the pedophiles from their membership or they can make LJ age restricted to 18+. The choice is theirs. I know one man isn’t going to change their mind but I’m about to become the sand in LiveJournals’ vagina.

Pedophile Rights?

Steve Huff has a great entry about how pedophile activists are comparing themselves to gay right’s activists and comparing their “plight” to that of the gay-rights movement. I know I have a few gay readers out there. I’m curious to get your feedback on a quote from a pedophile forum that was provided to me from Steve’s entry…

Anyway, I was reading on Wikipedia about the gay rights movement and other sexual revolutions. On the “Gay Rights” article, I found a list of general points usually agreed upon by the gay libaration movement. I thought I’d try to adapt them to the pedophile liberation movement. For the reasons I mentioned above, I specifically avoided including a lower AOC and legitimization of sex with children. So this is purely about social acceptance…

(…)The next sexual revolution (which is just barely starting), I believe, will be about age. It will lead to increased acceptance and open-mindedness toward alternative aetasexual orientations, and it will be accompanied closely by great triumphs in the youth rights movement, leading to much greater freedom for children and youth. These movements, which go hand in hand, are (very) slowly but surely beginning to make an impression on the collective consciousness of the western world. I’ve long been a fairly cynical person, yet I can now honestly say that I’m somehow beginning to feel it coming. The revolution will come, and it will come within the lifetimes of today’s youth. Not all of us will live to see it succeed in its goals — indeed, the gay rights movement really took off in the US almost 40 years ago, yet LGBT people are still widely persecuted and discriminated against — but I have a feeling that most of us will live to see the movement enter Phase II and begin making an impact…

Steve puts it best when he says that it comes down to the fact the hetero and homosexuality come down to the consent of adults. In pedophilia, there is no consent.

So my alternative lifestyle friends how do you feel that pedophiles are using you as the example to claim legitimacy for their repulsive behavior? Are you ok with this? I want to know.

I also want to thank Dan Riehl, who is a way more successful blogger than I am, for the mention. Every little bit helps.
