Sipps allegedly used the services of an underage prostitute being trafficked on Backpage. The girl was a 16-year-old runaway from Rhode Island who was allegedly being trafficked by a pimp. After Sipps found out the girl was 16 he reportedly got the idea to get her out of that life. Instead of contacting police or taking her home, he took her to his home where she lived for a month while they had sex.
Though she told Sipps she was 16 and a runaway from Rhode Island, “Sipps was unfazed … and drove (the victim) to his home in Aston,” the affidavit states. The teen stayed with Sipps for about a month. During that time, they had sex several times, according to the affidavit.
Even worse is that Sipps lived with his mom and his brothers. While not illegal it sure is creepy that he supposedly kept a 16-year-old girl there. The victim claims she felt coerced into staying there, and of course the Sipps’ family did not cooperate with the investigation, according to police.
While the age of consent in Pennsylvania is 16 there is still a corruption of minors statute which applies here since the victim is under 18. Sipps was arrested after the man who trafficked the girl, Raymond Justis, was arrested and pleaded guilty to sex trafficking of a minor. Justis was sentenced to 14 years.
First off, good on Pennsylvania for not only having this law on the books, but for enforcing it. I’ve always said that there should be harsher penalties against johns, and according to what I’ve read this one will be pretty harsh. When you make the risk greater than the ‘reward’ it will put a rather large dent in the number of people being trafficked. No more tickets and citations, bring on the felonies with real jail time instead.
42-year-old Kenneth Rex Church, of York, Pennsylvania, is being held on $500K bond for allegedly soliciting sex from minors who he met through craigslist. The first giveaway that Church may be a creeper was the ad he allegedly placed in the ‘casual encounters’ section of craigslist.
“I’m a middle aged man who has just gotten to the point where all I can think about are younger girls for sex.”
Later in the ad, he is accused of writing, “Young age is all that matters.”
Not a lot of wiggle room in that ad, so to speak.
Next came the texts to the 14-year-old girl who responded to his ad…
“I’m nervous cuz in not old enough. Cant I get into trouble??????”
Church, according to the complaint, responded, “Not as much as I can.”
“Since I’m an adult I should know better. If I were found out then I would be most likely arrested and charged with breaking a lot of laws.
To everyone else, you’d be the victim of an adult preying on you and seducing you (that would be me).”
SPOILER ALERT, the girl was an undercover investigator who probably had the easiest arrest of their career since Church seems to know exactly what kind of trouble he could have gotten himself into.
Again, there’s your typical denizen of the casual encounters section posting an ad that did not get flagged by craigslist’s community police, yet poor poor craigslist says they can’t spare a dime for moderators. Oh that $6M second house that Craig Newmark bought in New York? He must have got the money from returning soda cans or something. Move along, nothing to see here.
When the subject of age came up Straff allegedly had an answer I haven’t heard before. He is said to have replied to the age matter with “Well I’m not pushy and I am laid back.” In reality that’s just another way of saying the child predator mantra of ‘age is just a number.’ He’s also accused of allegedly sending dick pics to the detective as well.
Not surprisingly, the meeting place where the arrest took place was yet another fast food place. A doughnut joint for once, that’s new at least.
26-year-old James Clemens Jr. of Taylor, Pennsylvania, is a registered sex offender who was recently arrested for allegedly posting child porn to Tumblr. Clemens pleaded guilty in 2011 to bad-touching some kids at a church picnic. He’s also charged with not registering his Tumblr account with the state like I’m sure all sex offenders do.
How about instead of putting them on a registry we keep them in jail with real sentences. That will keep them from re-offending for a while.
29-year-old Justin D. Greer of Marietta, Pennsylvania, has been arrested for allegedly soliciting sex from a minor on craigslist. Investigators say that Greer’s ad included the pedophiles’ mantra of “age doesn’t matter”. Police posed as a 15-year-old girl and communicated with Greer.
Even though Greer was aware of the girl’s age, he asked for photos via text message and asked “what makes you want to try to have sex,” the affidavit states.
I’m sure some pedo-defenders will decry this as entrapment but as usual it’s not. Since Greer is the one who placed the alleged ad it’s kind of obvious what he was fishing for.
I still don’t understand why anyone would post child porn to a service that is owned by a multi-billion dollar corporation like Yahoo and think they could get away with it, but if makes it easier to find creeps like this then more power to ’em.
What really concerns me about this is that Tumblr is in the process of rolling out instant messaging for its users. Between creeps like this and the young userbase of Tumblr I see this as another avenue that predators can use to approach your kids.
Normally I tend to group all the sex crime suspects from Kik into one large group post since there seems to be so many of them lately, however this particular Kik Kreeper deserved a post all his own due to the severity of his crime and the age of his victim.
“Dave” asked the girl if “he can come to her house and sneak in her bedroom window to show her how to have sex” and perform other sex acts, police said in the complaint.
The girl told “Dave” she was 8 years old, police said, and he suggested they exchange nude photographs. Police said “Dave” sent the girl a photo of his genitals.
Turns out that Poplin was a registered sex offender as well.
The victim was using apps like Kik and Instagram on an iPad. Now I can understand giving your small child an iPad or any tablet because they can be very engaging for them but allowing them to use apps like Kik and Instagram is just ludicrous, or any communication app that can be accessed by individuals outside the household.
If you are a parent educate yourself on how the technology works before giving it to your kids and use the parental tools at your disposal to keep it locked down.
Last year Elytte Barbour and his wife Miranda pleaded guilty to the murder of Troy LaFerrara in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, and were both sentenced to life without parole. The husband and wife pair lured LaFerrara to his death by posing as a prostitute on craigslist. Once they got LaFerrara into their vehicle Miranda Barbour stabbed him while Elytte restrained LaFerrara by his throat.
Elytte Barbour is now asking for a retrial stating that his counsel was ineffective. He claims that there was evidence that he was insane at the time of the murder and that his attorney only urged him to take the guilty plea of second-degree murder to avoid the death penalty. Not surprisingly Barbour is representing himself.
Personally I’d like to see him get a new trial. I could use the laugh since he’s representing himself and if he went back to trial he’s probably be convicted on first-degree murder which would make him eligible for the death penalty.
UPDATE 9/14/2015:Here is a more current article about Elytte Barbour wanting to withdraw his plea. Apparently he is no longer representing himself as he now has a new attorney.
In the past I have posted stories about how suspects have been busted by police posing online as parents offering their children for sex. One of the arguments I get from the pedo-defenders is that there aren’t really parents online offering their kids for sex. Well, federal investigators might disagree.
