Backpage trafficking indictments in Providence, RI

Two men indicted for trafficking in Providence, N. Providence:

In Providence, Rhode Island 23-year-olds Andy Fakhoury and Joseph Defeis were indicted for trafficking women for prostitution off of the Village Voice Media owned backpage.com.

Police in RI were tipped off from police in NY that Fakhoury and Defeis were holding a 19-year-old girl against her will and making her work the streets for them. Police say they found the victim’s picture on backpage advertising for “upscale gentlemen”. The article says it was in the adult section of backpage which makes me believe that it was on the escorts section.

Yet backpage will try to tell you that they’re effective in putting a stop to trafficking on their site. Obviously not since Fakhoury and Defeis were allegedly trafficking other women as well. But it’s a victimless crime right?

In case you needed another reason not to hire a babysitter off of craigslist

Keith Bishop

Keith Bishop

Police in Tiverton, Rhode Island arrested 43-year-old Keith Bishop for allegedly molesting a 9-year-old boy that he babysat for about a year.

Bishop allegedly answered an ad on craigslist the parents had placed for a babysitter.

Would you hire a baby sitter from MySpace? Because there seems to be the same number of sexual predators on craigslist that there are on MySpace.

18 Attorneys General call for the shutdown of craigslist’s adult services but one is missing

AGs Call for End of Craigslist Adult Services:

Attorneys general target Craigslist:

Missouri AG Chris Koster joins other attorneys general asking Craigslist to remove adult ads:

Ohio AG: Craigslist should drop adult services:

Tennessee AG joins in call on Craigslist to eliminate adult services section:

AGs demand Craigslist drop adult services section:

Gansler among 17 state AGs calling for Craigslist to drop adult services:

Kansas AG Asks Craigslist To Remove Adult Ads:

In case you couldn’t tell this is big news.

18 U.S. State Attorneys General have called for craigslist to shut down the adult services section. Among those are Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Martha Coakley of Massachusetts, Chris Koster of Missouri, Richard Cordray of Ohio, Bob Cooper of Tennessee, Dustin McDaniel of Arkansas, Douglas F. Gansler of Maryland, and Steve Six of Kansas. Not mentioned are the AGs from Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas and Virginia.

Of course craigslist was quick to pay lip service to the AGs…

Craigslist supports states’ efforts to stop illegal exploitation, spokeswoman Susan MacTavish Best said in a statement that did not indicate whether the website plans to get rid of its adult services section.

Of course they have no intention of getting rid of adult services. Craigslist has a history of flying in the face of common decency.

While this is a big piece of news there’s something missing. It’s easy for these attorneys general to call for craigslist to shut down adult services. There’s only one attorney general who if he put his name behind this movement would have a huge impact. I am of course referring to former governor, former mayor of Oakland, current gubernatorial candidate and current attorney general of California…

Jerry Brown

Attorney General Brown, we may be politically opposed in some of our views but for a man who cares about the environment and opposes the death penalty I would imagine that you would be opposed to the trafficking of women and children that is being facilitated by craigslist.

Craigslist is headquartered in your home state. In my opinion craigslist’s shameful record when it comes to prostitution, child prostitution and human trafficking is a black eye for the Golden State. If I can’t appeal to your heart I will appeal to your aspirations. How much of a huge political coup would it be in your current gubernatorial race if you got the biggest facilitator of human trafficking in the country to get that section of the website shut down?

Mr. Brown, I beg of you to add your name to that of the other state attorney’s general in asking craigslist to shut down the adult services section. Maybe they will listen to you.

Markoff charged in RI robbery

Suspected ‘Craigslist Killer’ Phillip Markoff charged with assault of stripper in Rhode Island:

Today Julissa Brisman’s accused killer, Philip Markoff, was hit with additional charges. Rhode Island authorities charged Markoff with assault and attempted robbery for the incident in Warwick where he allegedly tried to rob an exotic dancer, who advertised on craigslist, at gunpoint.

The robbery took place two days after he allegedly killed Brisman.

RI man caught trolling for teens on MySpace

RI man charged with using MySpace to solicit sex:

A resource officer in a middle school in West Warwick, RI received complaints about a man who was contacting some students there inappropriately on MySpace.

The West Warwick police then set up a fake MySpace posing as a 13-year-old girl. That’s how they were able to capture 28-year-old Edgar Braley. They arrested him when he showed up to a pizza joint where he thought he was meeting the ‘girl’.

Rhode Island gang rape

MySpace again tied to rape:

A 17-year-old girl was gang raped in Rhode Island after being drugged. The three suspects are identified as Henry Duah, 20, Gabriel “G Money” Clarke, 21, and Jack “J Mob” Appiah, 26. The victim had met Duah through MySpace. Duah and company had picked the victim up at a mall. The suspects bought alcohol before stooping at the house where the rape occurred.

The girl was given an open wine cooler bottle to drink while the men were drinking some other type of alcohol.

At one point, the girl offered her wine cooler to one of the men but he declined to drink it, Whiting said.

At some point the girl became “woozy” and fell unconscious and then regained consciousness over a period of time before she was driven back to a friend’s house, Whiting said.

Appiah was arrested in Maine while trying to escape to Canada and is now being held without bail.

I was unable to find a MySpace for Duah and Appiah but I was able to find one for Gabriel Clarke.

If you ever needed a reason to check up on your kids’ MySpace this would be it.

Alleged Rhode Island MySpace Rape

Police: Man raped girl he met on MySpace:

Another New England MySpace alleged rape…

A Rhode Island man faces one count of rape and one count of indecent assault and battery after allegedly raping a Wachusett Regional High School student he met through MySpace.com.

Jorge Gilson Jr., 21, of Woonsocket, R.I., allegedly raped the 17-year-old student last month in the back of a truck in Holden, according to court documents.

Gilson originally befriended the alleged victim’s sister through MySpace, a public online community that allows users to share photographs, journals and personal information.

He and his cousin met the sisters at their house in Holden about 9 p.m. on March 12, and then drove to a local CVS, according to police statement written by Holden Police Det. Christopher Carey.

The two men bought a product normally used to inflate tires and, along with the alleged victim, inhaled from the can in the CVS parking lot multiple times, according to the report.

Gilson and the student allegedly began to engage in sexual activity in the parking lot and the rape allegedly occurred while Gilson’s cousin drove the truck from the CVS parking lot to Eagle Lake, according to court documents.

The alleged victim, who said in her statement she fell asleep in the car as the events occurred, told police she repeatedly objected to Gilson’s actions, according to the report.

Gilson told police the alleged victim agreed to perform oral sex and never objected to the sexual activity, according to court documents.

The sisters returned home about 11 p.m. and the alleged victim told her guidance counselor, Rick Gilbert, about the alleged incident the next morning, according to Carey’s report.

During Carey’s investigation, the alleged victim’s older sister changed her testimony about the night’s events, according to the police report.

The sister first told police that the alleged victim wanted to lose her virginity to Gilson and enjoyed the sex, and on March 17 complained to police that the alleged victim’s desire to press charges was affecting her friendship with Gilson.

But after police reminded the sister about the seriousness of the situation, she changed her statement.

Gilson, who was arrested on March 20, was released on $300 cash bail and is scheduled to return to court on April 27.

Is it me or is MySpace starting to sound like one giant ongoing episode of the Jerry Springer Show?

Sex Assault charges in Rhode Island

Man Charged With Sex Assault Of 12-Year-Old:

WESTERLY, R.I. — A 26-year-old Westerly man has been charged with having a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old girl.

Police said Alexander Manso met the girl on line, possibly either on MySpace.com or Zorpia.com.

Police arrested him in a sting operation, after allegedly finding he had text-messaged the girl on her cell phone.

He’s being held at the ACI on two counts of first-degree sexual assault.

Police said Manso might have thought the girl was 16 years old.

“So thought she was 16” is the best he could come up with? Granted the age of consent in RI is 16. However just because something is legal doesn’t make it right.

I was unable to find his profile.
