San Francisco to regulate vaping for all the wrong reasons

Supervisors propose regulations on electronic cigarettes :

The city of San Francisco is getting ready to introduce legislation that would ban the sale of e-cigs and vaporizers except where regular tobacco products are allowed. The same will go for public vaping as well. Can’t smoke there? Can’t vape there as well. Honestly, I really don’t have a problem with that. Even though vaping doesn’t even remotely produce the same kind of toxic cloud that smoking does the norms will still freak out when a puff drifts their way. Not to mention, for me anyway, that vaping has allowed me to increase the time I can go without nicotine. If I’m out to dinner these days I don’t feel the need to rush outside every 10 minutes. Plus as former smokers we should all be used to being relegated outdoors by now. Here’s the thing though. San Francisco will be enacting these regulations using the same old tired argument we’ve heard over and over again. It’s for the kids.

Supervisor Eric Mar, who has a 13-year-old daughter, said the number of students he hears about smoking in and outside the classroom has grown “exponentially.”

“E-cigarette companies use flavors like cotton candy I think as a hook for a new generation of users, but especially targeting teens and younger people,” said Mar, adding that the legislation is also meant to crack down on illegally selling e-cigarettes to minors.

“Tobacco companies know it’s a wild west out there, so common-sense regulations like ours that treat e-cigarettes like regular cigarettes are important,” he said.

The presence of e-cigarettes in media is “normalizing the smoking after several decades of anti-tobacco work to keep cigarettes out of television ads and magazines,” Mar added.

Again, with the flavors. Look, I’m in my mid 40s and here’s the flavors I have currently, Vanilla, Chocolate, Cherry Cola and Banana. Adults actually enjoy these flavors. I was just at my vape store yesterday where some guy got blueberry cheesecake flavor. Besides, how many kids nowadays walk down the street chowing on a big carnival sized serving of cotton candy?

Secondly not every e-cig company is owned by a tobacco company. As far as I know the majority of them are not and most places that sell them have signs in their stores indicating that they can not be sold to anyone under 18. I’m not saying that teens are not getting them but I think the horror stories of teen vaping are being horribly overblown.

I’m not going to turn a blind eye to the fact that e-cig companies are trying to get us hooked on their product. That’s what any manufacturer wants to do whether it be fast food or mobile phone apps or what have you. It’s up to us as individuals to decide whether or not we want to engage in these practices. Also what the good supervisors of San Francisco fail to realize is that vaping offers you an out.

As I’ve said I smoked for 30 years. In the 8 months since I’ve been vaping I haven’t even slipped once. I started off vaping at 20mg of nicotine. I eventually went down to 16 then to 11 and now I’m at 6. My next step will be to go to 0mg and then phase it out altogether. In three decades smoking never gave me that opportunity.

So if you’re going to regulate vaping be honest about it. Say you’re doing it for the potential of future taxes because honestly that’s what this is really about. Stop trying to say you’re protecting the kids.

Lawyer accused of craigslist rapes has most charges dropped

Judge dismisses most charges in lawyer sex assault:

Just when I said that a sex tape wouldn’t exonerate alleged craigslist rapist lawyer Robert Michael Hoffman it kind of does.

After a review of said tapes two of the three victims were deemed unreliable and charges for those two alleged rapes were dropped. However one of the rape charges is still going forward. Hoffman’s bond was reduced from $3M to $450K.

I still think that his career as a sexual harassment attorney has to be over at this point.

Lawyer accused of craigslist rapes says sex tape will clear him

Sex tape could clear suspected Craigslist rapist:

I originally posted about 50-year-old Robert Michael Hoffman of San Francisco here. He’s the sexual harassment lawyer accused of raping three women that he met through the craigslist personals for ‘rough sex’.

He now says that a sex tape with one of the victims will prove that the sex was consensual.

I don’t see how one tape will exonerate him for 3 rapes. The late Johnnie Cochran couldn’t even make that happen. Not to mention that any kind of video can be manipulated nor edited to have the defense show what it wants.

Of course the scumbag’s scumbag…I mean Hoffman’s attorney is blaming the victim…

“This witness lied blatantly about what occurred,” Hanlon later said.

Ok, but what about the other two victims?

And again I’m not blaming the victims because Hoffman didn’t have to ‘allegedly’ rape them, but if you’re meeting guys over craigslist for one night stands you are absolutely taking your life and safety in your own hands. Please be smarter than that.

Thanks to Barbi for the tip.

SF sexual harassment lawyer accused of brutal craigslist rapes

Attorney met women on Craigslist, sexually assaulted them, prosecutors say:

Rape case against rough San Francisco lawyer faces obstacles:

50-year-old Robert Michael Hoffman of San Francisco is a lawyer whose firm specializes in workplace sexual harassment. Apparently this scumbag was arrested by the Irony Police because he has been charged in the brutal rapes of several women that he met on craigslist.

Police say that Hoffman placed ads on the craigslist personals saying that the women should be expected to be dominated, beaten and made to cry.

An ad posted in June stated, in part, “I want you, I want to hit you, I want you to cry,” court documents show. “I want you to be scared of me sometimes.”

Other ads told women who agreed to meet him they would be pulled to the knees by their hair, slapped, degraded and humiliated.

Of course he is arguing that the sex was consensual.

Three women have come forward saying that Hoffman raped them including a 19-year-old woman who claims she was brutally raped and beaten by Hoffman.

A rapist is always to blame in cases like this but ladies please use some common sense. Craigslist personals are just filled with sexual predators like this. It doesn’t matter if they’re lawyers, doctors or even cops. Anonymous hook ups on craigslist is just leaving yourself open for a world of trouble. Please heed my words and don’t be a victim.

Craigslist is moving their HQ

Craigslist headquarters moving to downtown S.F.:

It seems that craigslist is moving from its quaint Victorian home turned office for a more modern facility in downtown San Francisco.

The company has signed a six-year sublease for more than 14,000 square feet at 222 Sutter St., said Jason Burch, vice president at brokerage firm Cassidy Turley BT Commercial.

I wonder how much of the sex money ads will be going towards paying this new facility. Just a thought.

SF Filipino leaders support craigslist protest

Filipinos protest Craigslist for adult services:

It seems that some San Francisco Filipino community leaders were very much in support of the human trafficking protest that took place in front of craigslist’s offices on 7/8/10.

“They become another channel. They become cyber pimps. The owners of Craigslist need to regulate their website,” said Alfonso Faustino, a Filipino-America candidate for California Assembly.

Rudy Asercion, executive director of the Westbay Pilipino Multi-Service Center said because of hard economic times, more and more young Filipinas — 13 to 14 year olds — roam the streets of San Francisco to sell their bodies. He said he won’t be surprised if their pimps use websites to advertise their services.

“Technology is being used to abuse these women and girls. For the rest of community, they would not care if they don’t know how bad it is. We have to let the community know,” said Asercion.

Yet craigslist and their enablers continue to act like child prostitution and human trafficking isn’t being facilitated through their site.

I have 4 years worth of posts on this blog that say otherwise.

More on the craigslist human trafficking protest

Activists to protest sex trafficking outside Craigslist office:

The article I linked to has some more details about the human trafficking protest that is set to take place outside of the office of craigslist on 7/8.

Craigslist is at 1381 9th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94122. The protest is set to take place noon local time and speakers will be from noon to 2pm.

There may be a speaker loosely affiliated with this website there but I can’t get into that too much right now.

I urge any of my readers from the Bay Area to please attend the protest. And if you are attending the protest please be respectful of the rights and properties of others while you’re there, that includes the rights and property of craigslist.

We want this protest to have meaning.

Human trafficking protest at Craigslist HQ on 7/8

Leading Human Rights Groups to Protest at Craigslist’s HQ on 7/08/10:

The article I linked to is a press release about a human trafficking protest that is scheduled to take place on the front steps of craigslist’s office in San Francisco. Let me just hit you with the highlights.

On July 8, 2010 at noon the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women (CATW), Prostitution Research and Education (PRE) and our over 75 Co-Sponsors will protest Craigslist’s facilitation of sex trafficking at Craigslist’s office, 1381 9th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94122.

A large portion of Craigslist’s profits come from the sale of commercial sexual exploitation, much of it trafficked, all of it prostituted. Craigslist normalizes and facilitates online pimping – providing an outlet and incentive for sex traffickers to reach buyers of human beings. “By providing traffickers and johns with a virtual red light district, Craigslist is aiding, abetting and enormously profiting from sex trafficking,” says Norma Ramos, Executive Director of CATW.

Our protest is co-sponsored by 75 leading human rights and anti-trafficking organizations and prominent individuals including Equality Now, End Child Prostitution and Trafficking (ECPAT-USA), Center for World Indigenous Studies, Soroptimists International of the Americas, Nevada Coalition Against Sexual Violence, Canadian Association of Sexual Assault Centres, Asian Americans for Community Involvement, and Gloria Steinem, author Victor Malarek, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney and Congresswoman Jackie Speier.

We are calling upon Craigslist to close the euphemistically named “Adult Services” section of their website and set a sex industry-free standard which would help to eliminate human trafficking on the internet.

For a complete list of the 75 Co-Sponsors who have joined CATW and PRE visit our websites at and

If I had the money I would be at that protest myself. If I have any readers in the Bay area who have some free time on the 8th I would ask that you please attend this protest.

However my advice to the CATW and PRE is craigslist isn’t the only player in this game. I would recommend that they hold a similar protest at the main offices of Village Voice Media who own who also run prostitution ads on their website not to mention in their publications as well.

craigslist child prostitution in the Bay Area

Technology helps fuel ‘pimping’ of young girls:

This is a very powerful article about a case of child prostitution in the Bay Area that was in part facilitated by craigslist.

I would do the story and its author a great injustice if I tried to either quote or summarize the story. That’s how good I think it is.

For those of you who think that child prostitution is not happening on craigslist you need to read this article.

And again for those of you that think prostitution is a victimless crime you need to read this article.

San Francisco Protest

Tens of thousands in San Francisco say no to war:

Now I know I said I was going to quit but I can’t let this one go. I just don’t get it. Why aren’t these people protesting the deplorable human rights violations going on in Iraq? Why aren’t they pressuring Saddam Hussein to step down? I thought hippies were all about human rights. And according to the article, someone was even flying a French flag. Go figure. Here are some interesting quotes from the article.

“We are here to say, ‘Thank you, France, Thank you, Germany, Thank you, China’ and ‘Thank you, Sen. [Robert] Byrd,'” said David Harris, a founder of the draft-resistance movement during the Vietnam War.

And I’m supposed to listen to a known coward why???

Danny Glover was MC of the event. You know I used to have a feature here on my site called “The Punch in the Head Awards” given to celebrities whose egos have led them to believe that they’re actually useful members of society. I may have to bring it back just for Danny Glover. A quote from Mr. Glover…

“Nobody had ever associated the war on terrorism with Iraq until just recently,” Glover told a reporter. “Remember, the war on terrorism was with Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda and everything else. … We have to make a statement about this by stopping this ongoing war.”

Sounds like someone wants to have their cake and eat it too. So its ok to bomb the crap out of al-Qaeda but leave that poor innocent defenseless Saddam Hussein alone? I don’t think so. We’re talking about a man who used poison gas on an entire village in his own country. He’s experimented with the gas on his own citizens. But all this is all about oil right? Whatever. Like I said the other day, let the blood be on your hands.

Exclusive to The Night Blogger. OK, not really. But anyway here is an eyewitness account of the protest.
