Just because Backpage is embroiled in a legal battle for survival with the U.S. Congress doesn’t mean it’s still not a major avenue for the online sexual slavery of women and children.
For example, 28-year-old Courtney D. Johnson was arrested in Memphis, Tennessee, for allegedly prostituting a 15-year-old runaway girl on Backpage. It wasn’t bad enough that Johnson was turning the girl out online, but when the girl said she didn’t want to work for Johnson anymore, he reportedly beat her and raped her. Johnson is also said to have instructed the girl to lie about her age. He also kept all the money the girl made.
Not to beat a dead horse, but so much for consenting adults that I’m constantly being told about. Anyone with a burner phone and a gift card can traffic someone on Backpage. Yet somehow, Backpage continues to argue that the peddling of human beings into sexual slavery is their right to free speech.
With all the Congressional hearings and possible legislation against Backpage, the child sex trade is still going on unabated on their website, even though they’ve lowered themselves to accepting gift cards as payments for ads. With any luck, the legislation will go through, the Backpage heads will be prosecuted and their seized assets will be put to better use, like providing resources for all of their sex trafficking victims.
Earlier this week, I posted about the murder of former Tennessee police officer Jonathan Outlaw. He was shot and killed at a Robertson County gas station after going there to meet someone from craigslist he thought he was going to sell his car to. Just a few days later, another armed robbery was committed at the same exact gas station, except this through the LetGo app.
If anyone has any information regarding this incident or the whereabouts of Cotham, please contact our tip line at (615) 382-6600.
I’ve said this many times before, but the old rules don’t apply anymore. You can no longer rely on meeting in public during the day even if you bring a friend along. Too many criminals have shown that these recommendations are for naught. Personally, I don’t do any business on these sites or apps for obvious reasons, but if you’re going to, use the local police department as your meeting place. It’s not a 100% guarantee of safety but it’s the safest option available to you today.
42-year-old Jonathan Outlaw was a former police officer at Tennessee State University. Recently, he was shot and killed at a gas station in Robertson County, Tennessee. He was there to meet someone from craigslist who was interested in buying his car, instead three suspects tried to steal the car from Outlaw. One of the suspects allegedly shot Outlaw as they fled with his car.
Police have arrested two suspects. One is a juvenile and the other is 19-year-old Ricardo Lamont Murray Jr. The third suspect has yet to be identified.
The Craigslist Killing blog has 119 craigslist murders listed on their site, but doesn’t have the murder of Mr. Outlaw listed yet. That would make 120 murders with a craigslist connection. No matter who you are, no matter what your background or profession, you can become a victim of one of these crimes. Even worse, there’s been so many of these killings you could be just a statistic.
39-year-old Brian Watson of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, has been arrested for allegedly soliciting for a 12-year-old girl to have sex with on craigslist. Watson’s ad, that was noticed by police reportedly said he was looking for “mothers who were looking for a guy to teach their daughter about the joys of sex.” Nothing too subtle about that one, huh? But I digress.
Murfreesboro police responded to Watson’s ad, posing as an interested mother with a 12-year-old daughter. The meeting took place at a local fast food restaurant, naturally. The kicker is when Watson showed up for the meeting, he had his 9-month-old baby in tow. I shudder to think what would have happened with the baby if this wasn’t a sting. How do we know that Watson hasn’t done anything like this before? How do we know the baby hasn’t been molested? Thankfully, CPS is investigating as well. Did I forget to mention he’s also a school employee?
Again, this isn’t even taking into account that craigslist allows these ads to fester on their site for who knows how long, and they do nothing to stop it. Not to mention, every time the cops catch one of these scumbags, it makes me wonder how many are carrying out these meetings with people willing to turn out their kids to child molesters.
But hey, you once found a cool couch on craigslist so it can’t be that bad, right?

While Mr. Williams’ disappearance may not be completely related to craigslist, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say it reminded me of the story of Richard Beasley. Beasley and an accomplice would place craigslist ads for non-existent ranch hand jobs. He killed three people who responded to his ads and almost killed a fourth. He committed these crimes because he was already facing jail time on other charges and was planning on stealing his victims’ identities in order to evade capture. Beasley was not only convicted of murder but was sentenced to death. He’s currently awaiting execution on Ohio’s death row.
My thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Williams’ family in hoping for his safe return.
59-year-old Ellis Vogt, of Fayette County, Tennessee, went missing in the summer of 2016 after hiring a caregiver off of craigslist. Back in February, his body was found and the caregiver, Pamela Bingham, had been arrested for theft for being in possession of some of Mr. Vogt’s property.
Recently, it was made public that Bingham has been charged with second-degree murder. According to an affidavit, butcher knives were found next to Mr. Vogt’s body that matched knives that were missing from his kitchen. Bingham allegedly went to great lengths to throw anyone off her trail…
Investigators said they discovered a burn barrel still smoldering outside Vogt’s home. They also discovered blood-soaked towels, a DVR recording device for the surveillance system, and a crowbar.
And why did she allegedly brutally murder a man who was just looking for someone to assist him around his home?
Surveillance video captured Bingham in the Walmart parking lot of Oakland, Tennessee on July 30, 2016, the day after Vogt was reported missing. The video shows Bingham making purchases inside the Walmart, but does not show that Vogt was with her.
I would lay odds that everything she bought from Wal-Mart was probably trivial at worst and a flat-screen TV at best. This goes a long way in showing how low criminals who use craigslist are willing to stoop just to buy themselves some cheap crap.
I originally posted about 59-year-old Ellis Vogt, of Fayette County, Tennessee, here. He went missing during the summer of last year after hiring a caregiver off of craigslist only known as ‘Janie’ or ‘Jaynie’. Sadly, Mr. Vogt’s body was found earlier last month and was just recently identified.
Janie/Jaynie has been identified as Pamela Bingham after she was arrested in Oklahoma after being found in Mr. Vogt’s missing van. While no cause of death has been rendered yet, police have stated that Bingham is a person of interest in Mr. Vogt’s death. She is currently being held on $250K bond.
Hiring a caregiver from craigslist for either yourself or a loved one is a risky move. At best they could not be bonded or well-trained, and at the worst they could be a con artist, sexual predator, or even a killer. This article can help you on how to decide where to get a caregiver. It may cost a little more to avoid using craigslist, but isn’t it worth it for the safety alone?
Child abuse will not lead to a child no longer act out like this. As a matter of fact, it will probably make them act like this even more. With this kind of behavior and the following abuse, you could be looking at a girl who ends up having a warped sense of sexuality, which could lead to future abuse by potential relationship partners and it could also lead her down a road of sex trafficking which could include prostitution, stripping and porn.
